Everyone thinks Dean and Cas hate each other, probably because they’re always arguing. Dean’s kicker for the school football team, and Cas is co-captain of the soccer team. Their usual topic of discussion: which sport truly deserves the name “football.”
“I run around a field kicking a ball with my foot. It seems really self explanatory.”
“It’s a ball that’s a foot long. Like, I don’t know what other name you’d be suggesting for it unless you wanted us to convert into metric for you.”
“Thirty point five centimeter ball does have a nice ring to it,” Cas shot back. He laughed as Dean wrinkled his nose, and added, “What about eggball? It is shaped like an egg—”
“Oh my god, not the egg thing again.”
All their other arguments really boiled down to them trying to gain a foothold in their football versus… football debate.
“You know, Cas,” Dean said as he sat next to him in Physics. “We did just beat the reigning champs, so like, as the higher ranked Lawrence High team, I feel like we kinda earned the name ‘football.’”
“Uh huh, if that makes you feel better. When we win states this year, I think the matter will be completely settled.”
That was how the whole school saw the Dean/Cas relationship: friendly (but constant) bickering. Somehow they failed to notice the other things. Like during practices, if Dean forgot his water bottle, Cas would run to get him one. Or how on particularly sunny days when Cas was on the “skins” practice team, Dean would be the one to give Cas sunscreen. They definitely didn’t see the cherry pie Cas baked for Dean’s birthday, or the hibiscus flowers Dean got Cas for his (“They’re supposed to attract bees.” “Thank you, Dean. I hope they do.”).
Both Cas and Dean had letterman jackets for their respective teams, almost identical except for the name printed on them. Apparently no one noticed that the one Dean always wore said Castiel and vice versa. And that one time Garth walked in on them making out in the locker room, no one believed him. It was too out there of an idea, and they assumed Garth was trying to pull a prank on them.
What they definitely did notice was when the two of them showed up at prom together, hand in hand. And even if some of the more skeptical would’ve dismissed that, every single one of them did a double take when they saw their ties. Dean was sporting a tie covered in soccer balls; Cas’ was one long football. And all night whenever anyone asked them about their ties, it didn’t matter which boy answered, they’d say:
“I’m wearing a football tie.”
