I repeated the experiment later, wearing the boots but otherwise my usual clothing and mimicking the expression I thought I’d had at that moment. People parted like I was Charlton Heston.

I now wear that style of boots whenever possible. I recently had a man do a double-take as I walked by and ask me, politely, where I had served because I “looked like a soldier.” I’m not current or former military. I was wearing a flowy purple peasant top and looked as un-soldierlike as possible.

"I know it’s a lot to handle at your second briefing," Minister for Magic Millicent Bagnold said uncomfortably. "But you are seeing the effects of this war already—those serial killers and the economic downturn, for example. Muggle problems are never just Muggle problems.”

Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher set down her teacup with a nod. “And you are stationing some police—I mean, Aurors—in my staff. Well, what else can I do? I assume you have your hands full, directly fighting this terrorist.”

"Try to keep morale up in the Muggle world. It keeps creatures called Dementors from breeding."

Thatcher made a note on the sheet in front of her. “And I should report any strange behavior in my close circles to this fellow”—she gestured to the portrait—“Though Labour lunatics always seem cursed to me.” She smiled to herself. “Keep yourself safe, Mrs. Bagnold.”

"And you," Bagnold replied. "I have to say, I am surprised at, er, your cooperation. My predecessors warned me that liaising with the Muggle government could be challenging."

"Are you English, first and foremost?" Thatcher said.

"Of course," Bagnold was slightly affronted.

"As am I," Thatcher said firmly, "Then is our war to win, not just yours.”

Plenty of films have taken a stab at bringing Bible stories to life, from “The Ten Commandments” and “Jesus Christ: Superstar” to this year’s “Son of God” and “Noah.” But despite those movies’ different genres and tones, these films all tend to share one similarity: They have white casts, even though the Bible’s characters would have been from parts of Africa or the Middle East. Photographer James C. Lewis of Noire3000 | N3K Photo Studios has decided to rectify by presenting these iconic figures in a new light. Lewis’ “Icons Of The Bible” photo series depicts some of the most famous characters from the Old and New Testament exclusively as people of color, including Simon Peter, Elijah, King Solomon and the archangel Gabriel. The series, which will be fully released in October, features 70 models who identify as either Asian, Native American, Hispanic, African, Middle Eastern, Black American and West Indian. "I think it is very important to see one’s self in the Scripture so that it may become real in their eyes," Lewis told The Huffington Post. "The whitewashing of the Bible has always bothered me. However I’m happy to now have the opportunity to give a different point of view."

After all, it’s the late 1870’s in middle of nowhere Arizona, and if you’ve come to stay—and Lord help you if you have—sleep with one eye open, because you’re on the wild frontier now, and the only lullaby you’re gonna get’s the lonely howl of coyotes, the wheels of your wagon and whinny of your horse, and the only law folks’ll listen to is the one strapped in your holster.
