The only thing I can say to them is "congratulations for falling for DC's racist and sexist bullshit"

like “batman sees visions of damian-as-batman in the future having sold his soul to the devil and everyone in gotham dies, so the logical conclusion is for him to send Damian back to the League of Shadows and his mother, who when being written by Morrison is an abusive villain-ball-carrier”

like first of all, i don’t think even the least charitable interpretation of batman would be like “yo i’m sending my 10 year old son back to the assassins who raised him due to some vague future vision stuff, without even trying to change or prevent that dumb future vision stuff”

and secondly, even if he did there’s no way that anyone else (dick especially) would let him go through with it or even let damian believe it was an option for half a second?

The art sucks most of the time, important events are never shown or explained, but it still manages to be convoluted, the villains are pretty flat, I kinda want to slap their Bruce, it’s full of sexist and racist tropes, there is a decent amount of homophobia in it too and…why does anyone like this?

“Morrison ties all of Batman’s history together!”

Yeah, and they get a lot of it wrong. Also, doesn’t make up for all the other places it sucks in.

“But Dick as Batman!”

Honestly…I feel like Dick forgot a lot of things he already knew just so Morrison could give him old character developement all over again. Dick is simply better as Nightwing if you ask me.

“But Morrison created Damian!”

At the cost of Talia’s entire character. And I like their basic ideas for Damian a lot more under other writers. Like, the complex relationship between Bruce and Damian that is just so much more compelling when Tomasi writes it compared to Morrison where they basically have no relationship and Bruce seems to be flat-out not interested in engaging with his son 99% of the time.

“But Dick and Damian as Batman and Robin!”

Bruce is facing more problems than just the loss of his fortune right now. The people of Gotham have suffered under supervillains like Joker for years now and even though Batman always beats them eventually things don't seem to get better. In fact each attack on the city seems to be worse than the ones before Batman came. After Bane ruled the city for several months, Joker took over Gotham for the nth time in Joker War and hundreds of people got killed in Arkham in Infinite Frontier #0, seemingly the Joker's doing once again, the people of Gotham have had enough of Batman. They don't see him as the solution anymore, they see him as part of the problem.

They elected the anti-vigilante mayoral candidate Christopher Nakano into office after Joker War and after the attack on Arkham the pressure on Nakano to deliver on his promises is rising. Scarecrow is pulling the strings in the background and making people afraid, which will probably lead to Nakano agreeing to let the Magistrate into the city (where that can lead was explored in the Futur State Batman books) to get rid off all villains and all vigilantes.

Batman has no idea what he’s doing. Superman? Not a clue. Wonder Woman? Whatever. Damian Wayne is Robin, and he’s done with the bleeding-heart approach favored by the heroes of the senior circuit. New plan of action: recruit a new Teen Titans. Kid Flash, Red Arrow and newbies Roundhouse, D’jinn and…wait, Lobo has a daughter? That’ll end well. And then build something in secret deep beneath the new Teen Titans HQ. Secret from his teammates, secret from even Batman. It’s a secret that will change the way you look at Robin forever!  

After reading the special and the first issue I was already pretty certain this was purely designed to kick Damian out of the Robin mantle in disgrace. There was no reason to get excited.

Williamson on the other hand promises me Damian as a hero, him going on an adventure that will impact the DC universe, kicking ass, positive character developement for Talia, cool new relationships and Williamson wants to include old friends of Damian at some point. He really seems to love the character and has read all of his books before starting this run.

And Gleb Melnikov’s art fits Damian’s character really well.
