AI Girl - 10/10 - This show is actually pretty brilliant. If you took elements of “Detroit Become Human”, Baymax from “Big Hero Six”, the Android elements from “Blade Runner” and Alien, GDT’s Frankenstein, a dash of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, and WALL-E, you get this show.
I KNOW there are people who watched this show with a "morally righteous" lense. This is to you people: You CLEARLY don't understand Sci-Fi. Go learn some media literacy. Acting like humans and inanimate objects haven't been a thing in Sci-Fi is silly; people haven been known to fall for fictional characters. And no, Gen isn't ab*sing Ai, Ai is learning what SHE wants to do through Gen.
Saying Ai had "no soul" when she felt the same mutual feelings, and went on a journey of self discovery just makes you look silly.
I love that this show makes you question what it truly means to "satisfy" and love someone.
Making you look at authentic emotions against manufactured perfection. Blurring the lines between Gen, Ai and Irene; the dialogue that both Ai and Irene have makes you think which one is truly human and authentic, and which one is better for Gen. Gen having an emotional awakening with Ai and then Irene shows you how artificial affection can evolve to true emotional awareness.
And speaking of "perfection", Al as a concept is supposed to be perfect right? No human emotions. And yet, Ai is learning, growing and evolving. She has autonomy, and voicing her opinions/consent. Just like a normal relationship.
As a "Gen" myself, having someone to understand me is all I really want out of life. Ai is that for Gen.
And can we talk about how they played with lightning in this show?! With Ai, it's always cool toned lighting - grays, blues, whites - very technical and "cold". With Irene, it's warm toned lighting - oranges, golds, yellows - very human and inviting. But as the show goes on, you can see the two blending! You see Ai's and Irene's colors changing; they became the opposite of each other. Throughout the show, you see the lighting changes for Ai in Irene-As Ai is becoming more human, her lighting is warmer, with hints of blue, and Irene's lighting is becoming more blue with hints of yellowish orange.
And when Ai and Gen share an intimate moment in Ep 4...YOU SEE THE COLORS CHANGE! Which can only mean one thing: POV SHIFT! And when they revealed Irene in Ep 3, I noticed them more.
And by the end of the episode 3, is probably one of my favorite scenes in the entire show: Gen standing in between two paintings that represent Ai and Irene, with Ai and Irene by their respective paintings with the matching colors to represent!
During the show, you can see the peppering of why Gen is an introvert. When she finally goes to see her mom, you TRULY see why she became the way she did; her mom having different expectations for her and her sister, and her expectations being so unrealistic she shut down emotionally. And as a first born like Gen, they are SKY HIGH. Thank goodness the mom is actually a decent person and sees where she went wrong, and tries to make up for her actions.
Then it touches on the "Work VS Passion" issue!
Gen's first love is art and creating. It's what makes her happiest in the world. When Gen's mom subtextually tells her to give it up because it's "not stable", it makes her shut down even more because finding a "real" job is the last thing she wants to do. But as the series progresses, you see her inspiration come back-her drive to create and FEEL.
Another element of the show is very Frankenstein and his monster. Ai, the "monster" is learning human emotions, becoming more human, learning her place in the world and experiencing humanity. Irene, being the creator, is becoming more robotic due to fear of expressing her own emotions, treating her creation like she's just wires and no "brains" and "parts", and being cold and soulless.
The juxtaposition of Ai and the guys from the lab is such a nice touch. Every human that works at the lab is more robotic, and Ai is more human and than they are. Shows that your environment can really shape who you are as a human being.
How Irene and Ai are slowing blending together into one person…shows how many sides one person can truly have.
Seeing how Irene became “robotic” during this series is really interesting. Because before the revelation in Ep 6, we merely see her as guarded and cold. After the revelation, it gives her some warmth back. By Ep 7, you can see her warmth, her humanity, even feel it. She had fallen for Gen, but knew she had to let her go be happy with Ai.
And the ending is the literal definition of a wedding vow, holy crap. I didn’t expect to cry that hard.
