While Taking the Flight
I took my BART ticket out of my wallet and put it in the entry slot to get inside the Oakland Bart station to airport Monorail connection. It gave me an error that I was short on ticket amount to exit the BART station and enter the Monorail station. I checked the screen twice to verify if I didn't read it wrong as I paid an exact amount from my home station to Coliseum BART. I got confused for a moment and looked around to realize that a couple of other people were stuck like me as well. I was not sure about the next steps, hence just followed a guy to an “Add Due Balance” machine. I inserted my ticket in that machine to check the due balance. "Cash only" was written in the small text below the message, so I took out $20 and placed it in the money slot. The machine immediately threw it back (I am exaggerating a little bit, but it felt that way at that moment). I couldn't figure out what went wrong as there was no error message, so I tried the same $20 bill a couple more times with the hope of some miracle. Eventually, I realized that the person standing beside me was facing the same problem. Both of us approached a lady sitting inside a ticket window to get the explanation and speed up the process. She told us to get the change from a third machine on the opposite side and use $5 or $1 bills only. As I was leaving my machine, I wanted my ticket back so that I can get the change first. Voila! As there was no way to get back my ticket from that machine without paying the due amount. Eventually, I just ran to a changing machine, got the change, and ran back to the balance due machine. I entered $5 with the hope of getting my ticket back, but it wouldn't. I couldn't figure out the reason, so the nice lady from ticket center had to ask me to put extra $1 as it needed total $6 bucks to pay the due balance. Well, how do I know when the machine was not showing it to me.
After switching between 3 machines, having help for 2 times, and spending about 12 minutes to get out of the BART station to catch the monorail to the Oakland airport; I finally caught my flight.

Magicbox
We were in our interview with a hunter. It was interesting and insightful to learn about hunting as a family tradition and culture in that community. Half way through our interview, we decided to get feedback on the prototype of Hunting Reporting Application we had been working on since a couple of weeks. My teammate took his iPhone 5s out of his pocket, and opened inVision prototype on his phone. We asked the interview candidate to go through the prototype flow. He took some time to get started, and he struggled in between. We assumed the reason behind the struggle and more time is due to the learning curve of this new application. Once he was done with the prototype testing, we asked him about his final thoughts. And he goes, “The cellphone I have isn’t a Magicbox like you folks have here. The cellphone I have is the one where you dial-up and that’s it."

My father, a born design researcher
We were talking to my father about wedding reception dinner. He started his talk with a simple observation, "There are 3 types of people in your wedding dinner. One type includes the people of my grand father's age who don't much explore the options, but follow their children's suggestions. Second type includes the people of my father's age who explore the least food options, and try to stick to their routine ones. The third type includes the youngsters who would explore as many options as available, but avoiding the typical routine dishes. We should include the menu to serve these 3 types of needs." Who says design research is not the most explored practice? We use design research everyday :)
