"There's this feature X in my target language... it makes no sense to me, so I will wait for it to magically enter my memory... Not tackling it yet!"

I've seen this mindset repeated over and over by people learning Finnish, especially when it comes to consonant gradation. I myself am a native speaker of Finnish (to the surprise of many, apparently), and most of the languages I had previously studied had nothing similar (or as difficult or "foreign" to understand), so I couldn't really say anything about it.

However, in uni, I started learning North Sámi. It also has gradation, just on a larger level and with different consonants in a different way. This allowed me to form an opinion:

If you don't get it, don't get it. Just memorize it well enough so you know how to apply it and when.

Do not wait or delay learning an important part of the language just because you are scared or confused. Do it scared and confused. If you want to learn the language, learn the language! It's that simple. You can try to start to understand the mechanics after spending 4 hours each night drilling practice questions.

I would naturally apply this to every language one wants to learn, but as I am a blog about Finnish, I'll say; if you do not understand gradation yet, pick your book up! Practice!

I think that this applies to multiple aspects of Finnish and I totally agree. I would also like to add that Finnish is taught usually in a very grammar oriented way. If you like that, cool. But if you do not like that please remember that you do not have to understand or memorize everything right away. Use the language, read it, write it, speak it, listen to it. You will start to learn stuff by heart by pure repetition.

If you can remember all the 40+ declination groups for nouns by heart and also know what noun is in which, nice! That sure gives you a shorthand. But if you do not remember that easily, I am pretty sure that you will start to remember correct forms for at least most common words pretty quickly if you just use the language. It has worked for me at least with every language I have learned.

Accepting that there are things about Finnish that I can't find an equavalent for in Danish has been paramount to my learning journey. I also quite like that Finnish is so grammar heavy. Danish does have grammar, but it often feels like someone just threw some grammar on the wall and used whatever stuck. With Finnish I mostly just have to learn the rules for one word with a specific ending, and then those rules will apply to other words with the same ending. Does that mean I find Finnish easy? No, but it means I don't have to guess how to conjugate a specific word. I can just take a look in my grammar book.

I will still make mistakes though

I don't think people slipping up on pronouns every once in a while signals that they deep down still see you as your former gender. I think when parents call their kids by a sibling or pet name it doesn't mean they deep down see their dog and child as the same being. I think muscle memory lives in the tongue and everyone slips some times and it doesn't mostly reveal anything deep in the subconscious. I think we need to let sigmund freud's students and disciples and implications go.

I've seen "fuck the beauty industrial complex" posts about complicated skincare regimens and am 100% with them except sometimes they mention sunscreen and no. no. absolutely not. sunscreen is a wonderful supportive friend who wants to keep you safe, and you should let her do it. throw out all your other cosmetics and skincare products if you want, but keep your sunscreen. and if you're not wearing sunscreen, start wearing it!!!! this is not about terror of aging, this is not about every tiny imperfection our fucked-up culture has made you feel insecure about, this is about protecting yourself from skin cancer. wear the damn sunscreen.

One of the most common myths I read about Finland is that school students have no homework. So I want to take the opportunity to inform anyone who might consider raising a child in Finland, that just because my Finland-born Finnish husband didn't do his homework, that doesn't mean that there is no homework in Finnish schools. You simply can't use the statistical outlier that is my husband and apply it as the standard.

#my father died almost 9 years ago #our relationship was pretty alright when I was little as he was -what I would call- my primary parent #plus he was the one who told me about things like the menstrual cycle and made sure I went to a private school #the downside of that is that he was extremely perfectionistic on my behalf and he wanted me to get a high prestige education and job #but because of my mental health issues I couldn't live up to those standards forever so our relationship turned pretty sour #also he loved guilttripping me and my bro for our family not having any money because of us going to private school #he also constantly bugged me about grandkids which is understandable but there was no way I would have made a good parent in my 20s #tho I did have thoughts about single-parent fertility treatment because part of me felt guilty about not producing any grandkids #fast forward to now I did become a mom and while it would have been nice for my daughter to meet her maternal grandfather #- and I'm sure she would've been spoiled rotten by him - I also see her arrival as a sign that what happened in the past stays in the past #plus apart from me wanting to raise her with values rooted in good self-esteem politeness and taking no bs from others #I will also be staying away from the idea that my daughter has to be perfect in order to have worth #or that she has to fullfill some big purpose like I felt my father wanted me to do #tldr it's complicated lol
