Magick is a personal manifestation of energy that comes from within a person. It’s spelled with a “k” at the end to distinguish it from magician magic.
These terms are sometimes interchangeable in witchcraft and Wicca. Every Wiccan and witch will likely tell you something different. My definition of such is that a witch is someone who practices witchcraft, while a Wicca is one who practices witchcraft and worships nature, the elements, and/or deities/a deity.
A spell doesn’t magically make something happen. You can’t teleport from one side of the country to the other in a blink of the eyes, and you can’t snap and change the weather. A spell is something done to or for someone or something by conducting and projecting one’s energy into them/it. A spellbook, which can also be in a Book of Shadows or called a grimoire, is, as the name implies, a book of spells. All spells require different aspects, such as crystals, essential oils, herbs, words, etc.
A personal journal on your Wicca journey and/or your personal grimoire. This is usually very, very personal and private to each individual Wiccan. Some may think this is because a Wiccan’s spellbook is evil and harbors evil spirits, but this simply isn’t true. Wiccan’s don’t generally do things half-assed or apathetically, as being a Wiccan is (usually) one’s own choice. Wiccans know that you shouldn’t mess with spirits and Karma, as everything comes back to you times three.
“Casting a circle” means creating a magickal circular energetic forcefield around you or someone else to protect you/them from negative energies or spirits, especially while performing certain actions which require projecting energy from oneself.
A large metal pot or kettle used for boiling over an open fire, as for burning or melting items in a ritual circle. It can also simply be used to mix spell ingredients without burning them.
A mortar is a type of stone, wood, or glass bowl used for crushing and grinding ingredients like herbs and flowers into a powder or paste with a pestle, which is a stone, wood, or glass pounder with a rounded end.
The place you go after you die, whether you led a good or bad life, where you reflect on the choices you made in your life, and then your soul is returned to the earth to enter a life entity where it’s needed. It’s believed to be a land that’s not good nor bad but just is, where it’s always summer and there’s no suffering or pain.
A ceremony when a baby is born, performed during the waxing or full moon and aligned with the child’s astrological sign. You cast a circle and light a candle inscribed with the baby’s name, astrological sign, and date of birth. The child is blessed and prayers are offered. It’s not meant to purify the baby but to bless it. This isn’t a baptism or christening.
This is a Neo-Pagan custom in which a couple hosts a commitment ceremony to one another. Like a wedding, such a ceremony can be seen as secular, while others can be seen as temporary.
Skyclad means “complete nudity”, and thus this would mean the worship of something or someone in complete nudity. It’s uncommon practice in Wicca. But Wicca is a fertility religion, which is what makes it so normal. No one forces you into it if you’re uncomfortable with the concept of being naked around others. You’re not forced to have sex with one another. Very rarely is sex or sexual desire even considered. It’s used more as a symbol of being completely open and vulnerable to your deity/deities.
The 8 holidays celebrated throughout the year by Wiccans. The 8 holidays are Yule, Imbolc, Ostara, Beltane, Midsummer, Lughnasad, Mabon, and Samhain. They each also have many other names which are all acceptable.
The festive meetings Wiccans do each month during full moons, for initiation ceremonies, healing magick, etc.
An animal with whom you have a magickal or spiritual connection to.
A platform or dais upon which a Wiccan places symbolic and functional items for worshiping one’s Gods/Goddesses, casting spells, and/or reciting chants or prayers.
The act of separating your astral body or your consciousness from your physical body during deep meditation or slumber.
An inscribed or painted symbol considered to have magickal properties or power.
Tasseography (tasseomancy, tassology)
The reading of the dregs at the bottom of a teacup after the tea is drank, with specific instructions. It doesn’t always predict the future but helps gain insight into a situation in your life, as with most Wicca “future-telling” practices.
A meeting at which people attempt to contact the dead, usually through a medium.
A supper or dinner that honors the loved ones who’ve passed on, and sometimes one invites the God or Goddess they worship. This is mainly for those who can keep silent during the entirety of the event, but pets can roam through if they’d like.
To “foretell the future” using a crystal ball. Meaning, to gain insight into one’s future using meditation through a crystal ball. As said before, it’s not always to tell the future, however, there are people out there who are considered clairvoyant or psychic. Not all Wiccans practice future-telling, either.
A small stone or carved mineral marked with a rune and used in gaining insight into one’s past, present, or future by evoking the Universe or a deity. A rune is a letter of an ancient alphabet used by pagans.
Candles are, of course, waxy cylindrical molds with a wooden or string wick used to alight. Candles in Wicca are important and used in casting spells and performing rituals. Which color candles to use depend on the spell or ritual.
(Usually) uncut minerals and stones used in many ways, such as casting spells, performing rituals, and for healing properties. Crystals and gemstones can conduct energy that enhances a spell, which is why they’re so important to use.
These are natural oils made through distillation and beholding the fragrance of a certain plant, herb, or flower, from which it is extracted. They’re mainly used in aromatherapy, but in Wicca they’re used to enhance magick spells. What they do depends on each essential oil.
This is a spice on a stick that’s burned for the smell it produces. In Wicca, it can be used for many different things, such as prescribing certain moods or permeating certain energy into the air. It depends on the spice.
Salt is, chemically, sodium chloride. It’s a miniscule (usually) white crystalline grainy substance. Certain salts are used for certain things. Generally, salt can absorb energy, thus making it the perfect guard against psychic or spiritual attacks. It can also purify your environment to prepare for rituals and ceremonies.
Herbs are plants with leaves, seeds, or flowers used, secularly, for food, perfume, or medicine. In Wicca, they’re used as healing materials.
Tarot cards are like playing cards except bigger in size and have different suits and numbers, usually in Roman numeral form. They’re used for gaining insight into one’s past, present, and/or future. Oracle cards provide answers to one’s innermost questions, some they perhaps didn’t know to ask themselves.
A pendulum is a weight which hangs at a fixed point so that it can swing freely back and forth. Depending upon which direction the pendulum swings, you’ll gain insight into questions you might have.
A chalice is like a special type of footed cup intended to hold a drink. It represents the feminine aspect of the Universe. It’s often combined with a ceremonial knife called the Athame, which represents the masculine aspect of the Universe.
This is a very important tool in Wicca. Gerald Gardner, the Father of Wicca, wrote that an Athame is the most important magickal tool for a Witch. It’s a steel, likely double-edged ceremonial dagger with a sharp point and a dark handle. It represents the element of fire and is thus masculine. This is never used to harm anyone or anything, including oneself. It’s often inscribed with different symbols you may identify or connect with. It’s used to direct energy, cast ritual circles, carve a door within a ritual circle, and charge and consecrate certain objects. Sometimes a ritual will require cutting plants, candles, cords, etc., but never an animal or human.
An offering bowl is any bowl used for offering anything you deem worthy to your deity/deities. This can include herbs, liquids, powders, coins, poems, crystals, or anything you think they would like.
A bell of any kind which signals the beginning of worship, spellwork, or divination, and can help cleanse any negative energy with its vibrations.
A practice where you use mindfulness to focus your mind on something specific, to train your attention and awareness, and to accomplish a mentally clear and composed state. This is often used to connect with the spirit world or to keep focus during a ritual for a desired outcome.
A stick of wood, crystals, herbs, wire, or anything you deem necessary for helping channel and direct energy toward a specific purpose or intention. It’s associated with fire, and thus is a masculine symbol.
This can range from drums to didgeridoos to ocarinas. They’re used for enhancing celebrations and ceremonies, as well as rituals and the magickal properties of objects on your altar.
A mirror is, of course, a reflective glass object, usually circular or rectangular. In Wicca, it’s used for surfacing subconscious emotions about yourself as a form of healing. This is a type of meditation and can take some time.
An amulet can be any object you choose, usually a small one so it can fit in your purse or pocket, that’s intended to bring good Karma and protection to its owner. A talisman is like an amulet, except that it has a greater magnitude and can transmit energy to its owner.
A Wiccan may choose to wear whatever they want daily. There is no set creed in Wicca, and thus there’s nothing that says you must wear black or red or any specific color or pattern. However, during a ritual, it’s likely a coven will require that you wear something specific, like a robe of black, white, gold, red, etc.
The principle that whatever energy, whether positive or negative, you put out into the world will come back to you three times.
The key moral of Wicca that basically states that one can do whatever witchcraft they’d like, so long as they aren’t causing harm to anyone, including themselves. The very end of the Wiccan Rede states this: “These Eight words the Rede fulfill: ‘An Ye Harm None, Do What Ye Will’”.
Witches Pyramid (4 Powers of the Magus, 4 Secrets of the Sphinx, Hermetic Quatinary)
The philosophy of the foundation of the magickal arts. It has five levels, each corresponding with an element. Starting from the bottom up, it goes “to go”, “to keep silent”, “to will”, “to dare”, and “to know”. The elements, starting from the bottom up, are Spirit, Water, Fire, Earth, Air.
“To go” is sometimes included in one’s beliefs and sometimes not. It’s to put your soul into your practice through your words and your actions.
“To keep silent” is to keep silent when wanting to boast and display your practices with pride, or to boost your own ego.
“To will” is to take responsibility for your efforts and outcomes, heed the ambition to carry on when you fail, and focus on your intents and energy.
“To dare” is to be strong and courageous to know yourself, test yourself, and to face your inner self.
“To know” is to know what you are doing when practicing magick. Don’t half-ass it and hope it’ll work out—understand what it is what you are doing and why you’re doing it.
