This time, the woman wasn't just a character meant to compliment, support, or develop her male counterpart,– she was the protagonist of her own story. When she comes to understand the reality of her doll-like existence, Nora chooses to reject the roles so easily pushed onto her by society: of a dutiful mother, a subservient wife, a compliant woman, and instead sets out to find something much more important: herself. The resultant "slam of the door" as she walks out plunges the theatre in darkness, signalling an end to her partaking in this age-old play women had been forced into for centuries.
