     It has been too long . Centuries last since an enemy of this magnitude, with its grotesque body of curling shadows and living malice, bleak and bone - white eyes has faced him down . It is certainly no titan of the days of yore, but a dark force in the dead of night is just as worthy an enemy, if it would dare to threaten this heartland of his . Once again, Ruyi Bang whirls back to his hand in a surge of Geo magic, multifaceted blade dripping in the liquid shadow lifeblood of the creature . Only the greater of the shades cross over to the mortal realm, and though it is certainly wounded, Zhongli’s own shoulders begin to shudder from exertion .

     And then there is a rush– trees all around stock still yet a localized surge of anemo magic . It feels so different though; it is no archon - granted wind but rather … wild and primal, just shy of unrestrained, so unlike the magic contained in a vision . At once, just out the corner of his eye ( because even in this curious event he would not dream of taking his eyes from the daemon before him ) there is a blade of striking jade glinting in the night - light and recognition sinks in . “ You are here … “ The beast across the way lets loose some primordial shriek, somewhere between nails - on - metal and a bestial howl, and the expression not unlike annoyance on the great Yaksha’s face does not escape his notice ( is he, perhaps, annoyed by the turn of events ? or perhaps he himself is stepping too far onto the toes of their Contract in his action … )

     The call is never like a chime in the wind. There’s nothing soft or serene about it. It’s sharp and suffocating. It invades his senses like fire, that burns through his veins, if he chooses to ignore it—and trust him, he’s tried. The Contract. The fire tugs at his chest, where it always starts, pulling straight at his soul only to move outward. Only in death would the Contract end to which both of them have been quite resilient in surviving.

     The adeptus zips through the night to where he’s called. Even without the connection, the wave of geo magic would’ve given away the other’s position. He lands with a blast to the ground, jaded blade glinting in the moonlight. Xiao nods, in reply, though there’s a slight stiffness to his jaw. Why was the archon out here fighting daemons? Why hadn’t he caught the daemon himself? He silently curses himself. There’s little time to talk before the beast strikes toward them. The yaksha grips his spear tighter and darts toward the enemy.  

     The Yaksha hears the human before they utter a word, war trained ears always on alert. He doesn’t turn, arms crossed, body leaned against a tree focussed on his patrol. It’s one of his duties, despite wishing to keep his contact to the mortal realm minimal. ( Call it the fine print of his contract. ) He patrols in the dead of night, or before first light, when the least amount of humans would be wandering. Many of them were predictable, always following a routine, even if they didn’t realize. Though, he supposed, immortals were just as monotonous, if the endless fight he battled proved anything.
