I have learned that I prefer craft over digital from doing this self-directed assignment. The most difficult aspect of my chosen assignment is time management. I enjoy playing with the wax and resin about this opportunity. I would rate myself 80 because my works are awesome. One thing I would do differently is updating my working process on time with the class and get more feedback.

This website is my colorful reflective piece, I have organized each project and its process. I only add images on my website, so it is purely visual. 

My experimental piece is inspired by some portrait photos. Time will draw all the things you have been through on your face. Wrinkles are technically a wound that repetitive motion injury that you get from frowning, smiling, squinting, etc... and that never heals. Wrinkles, scars, and any facial features are the “Hachures” on a face. The reason that I didn’t put eyes on this face is that, it is human instinct that our attention will immediately draw to the eyes. I want my audiences to look at all the scars I put on the cheek bones first, then the facial features. If they look closely, they will see wrinkles beside the nose, on the lip and on the forehead.

My experimental piece is inspired by those portrait photos. Time will draw all the things you have been through on your face. Wrinkles, scars, and marks are Hachures on a face.

My plan A is to use resin to seal a piece of withered leaf. Hachures are interpreted lines of textured or uneven land. Similar to that, veins are the interpreted lines of textures on a leaf. A withered leaf has more exaggerated veins than a fresh leaf has. Therefore, those veins are a great interpretation of the hachures. After experiment with withered leaves and waves, I decide to use waves as my 3D final piece. Waves are created by energy passing through water, waves give textures to the water. I have used 3 different techniques to do the foam and they all surprisingly come out beautiful. I find that any 3D object can relate to my word “Hachure”.

I videotaped the process of burning down a tree trunk made from my 3D wax collections. Fire is a simulation of nature force, it is accessible and has a great effect on wax. This is also a process that turning 3D to 2D which shares the same characteristic that hachures translate the real 3D world on a 2D map.

Only added a small drop, the pigment is too strong for this small amount of resin.

I wanted to make a cube but it turned out tilted, try to find an alternative mold. There are too many bubbles in the resin, my plan is to do a two-stage pouring, need to see if layers would show up.

I’ll run a test on the top leaf first. 

Both my 3D and 4D testings were shown to the class, no significant comments were received, Paul suggests me to keep working on my ideas. The previous idea for 3D was to use resin to seal the outcome piece in my 4D, I still plan to use resin (glad that I have the material to work on at home) but the piece will now become a piece of withered leaf. However, due to the COVID-19, I’m not able to buy more brown wax from the school studio. I have to choose something from my collection and it will be a tree trunk that would be burned down. Fire is a simulation of nature force, it is accessible and has a great effect on wax.

Finally, the scary consequence acts on me and forces me to pick up what has been left over for who knows how many weeks. Not feeling surprised to end up into this situation once again. I thought about changing my behaviors over and over again, felt like a loser every time. There were two weeks that I felt really good about these projects and my ideas were exciting. I was at the right pace on the projects and I felt like a true artist, not a dumb who just trying to pass the mandatory course. I feel awful to have the nerves not working on these gd projects but feel proud that I did great jobs on my astronomy course. During these absent weeks, I made great progress on my pouring art pieces and cooked great meals and took great care of my plants at home. I have to admit that I failed my expectations on gd and typo classes but this is life, I’m still a great person.
