Lets talk about lighting. A lot of folks think that I use a ton of photoshop to hide my stretch marks, cellulite and bad skin. I will mention here, that photoshop is NOT inherently bad. I have worked with photographers that use photoshop to only adjust colors and light. I have also worked with photographers that enjoy full body modification (like @rhophotos who has created some my most iconic images of my career) - In the past, I was fine with the copyright holders using as little or as much as they chose to use. But…. Now that I shoot my own content, I use very little photoshop. Honestly, I am just not very talented with it. Things that I adjust are probably silly to most of you… I will often lengthen my hair a few inches (because PCOS is affecting my hair growth and I miss my hair). I often remove the hairband from my wrist (it bothers me in photos) or adjust a crooked boob from a bra that is too tight…. I rarely touch up stretchmarks/cellulite (and I have both). The trick has always been lighting (and I am sure even admiting that I choose proper lighting will bother some of you) - But let’s talk about it anyways…… I want you to imagine a golfball, with indentations all over it. Now imagine putting a bright light, as bright as the sun, focused above it. How do those indentations look? Harsh. Lots of shadows. You can count every indentation, right? Now take that same golf ball and put a soft light in FRONT of it. A soft box of light. What happens to the indentations? They smooth out, right? The shadows disappear. The golfball becomes flat, uniform with light…… Lighting a model is the same. Bodies are 3 dimensional. Here are some images to give you an idea of lighting that does not work. Harsh side lighting, harsh overhead lighting… Most of these were shot in my early 20s, when I weighed half what I do now. (at Rochester, New York)
