Evening Star, 2 October 1910 Alongside the amusing image of de Kalb having “practically forced” him to come to America and a back-handed assessment of his abilities as solider and statesman, the newspaper pulls out the stops in describing Gilbert:  “Occasionally there blossoms in a neglected garden a rare flower. So perhaps may be explained how from the most corrupt and licentious nobility in Christendom, an aristocracy most absolute and arbitrary, steeped in many centuries of feudal lordship, there sprang one of the purest of men, one of the most ardent of soldiers in the cause of liberty and one of the most steadfast champions of the rights of man the world ever has known. Of all her great sons France can rank few higher than Marie Jean Paul Roch Yves Gilbert Motier, Marquis de Lafayette. He was not a great soldier nor was he a great statesman, yet he was the idol of America and the idol of France. History gives no higher devotion to principle than he furnished. The Lafayette of seventy-seven was the Lafayette of nineteen. No stain rests upon his glorious name.” American newspapers of this period were convinced there was a “Jean” somewhere in his name.  So there you have it. The 1910 equivalent of “Beautiful Cinnamon Roll Too Good For This World, Too Pure” (like…almost literally: “rare flower” “one of the purest of men”).     

Doesn’t sound demonic, which is a nice change of pace from the typical 8x slowed down songs.
