RELATIONSHIP WITH GREER.

Deja and Greer had a complicated relationship. With both of them holding such illustrious legacies and public images, it was fair for outsiders to assume that they got along fairly well as suitemates for the past two years. They were friendly enough in public, but those who knew them would have probably considered them frenemies at best. Throughout their first two years of university, Deja and Greer had gone through the best and worst of times within the confines of Alcott’s 208.

Wanting to prevent bad relations with the Morissons, Deja’s family had warned her to be hospitable with her new roommate. The pair had gotten along well enough at first, with both of them initially on their best behavior, but things quickly soured as Deja discovered what life with a roommate would truly entail. Disagreements over belongings in their shared spaces, frustrating waiting periods for the bathroom, and seemingly constant unexpected visitors were just a few things on Deja’s long list of complaints about her living situation with Greer. With a backhanded compliment here and a passive-aggressive comment there, Greer and Deja never hesitated to vocalize their grievances with each other at every turn. The comparisons that their peers made of them certainly did not help their relationship, only further tainting their dynamic with envy, resentment, and unhealthy boundaries.

Still, Greer knew Deja better than most people in her life, which is something she didn’t take lightly. Even with all her critiques, she held a soft spot for her admittedly magnetic roommate. Nothing could take away the precious memories they shared, including inside jokes, bonding over their family’s pressures, and witnessing each other’s most private selves. Because of this irreplaceable familiarity (and the fact that they live in one of the best living accommodations on campus), they agreed to continue rooming together into their junior year. However, things changed when Greer never returned for their third year. Now that her roommate’s gone, Deja jokes that she finally has the place to herself, but she feels uneasy about this whole situation. With the whispers pointing to nefarious activity, this ordeal is much too close for comfort.

EMBODYING THE NEPO BABY.

Deja’s family holds one of the strongest legacies at Ogden College, beginning with Dr. Lucius B. Ellison, one of Ogden's first Black graduates. Since then, many Ellisons have joined the extensive list of notable Ogden alumni who use their resources, investments and prestige to establish generational wealth. After his time at Ogden, Deja’s father had chosen to pursue music, and he established himself as a prominent R&B artist in the industry. It was in certain entertainment circles that he met Deja’s mother, an actress, and they’ve been a beloved celebrity couple ever since.

Being the child of a famous couple came with a huge spotlight on Deja and her older sister’s personal affairs. Deja was being coached to wave to the public before she could even speak, and the general Internet captured her growing-up experience better than any regular photo album ever could. Upon graduation from her performing arts high school, it wasn’t much of a surprise when she enrolled at Ogden College to major in film and media studies. Following in her parents’ creative footsteps, she has the security of knowing that the doors of opportunity have always been open to her. 

She carries her status as a nepo baby with high esteem. She’s proud of her family’s success, and she sees no point in proving that she deserves what’s already hers. Deja shamelessly uses her assets and her connections to her advantage as she floats through college, mainly using her undergraduate years as a time of socialization and frivolity. She goes through life with the expectation of shortcuts, even if these shortcuts come at the expense of peers who have worked twice as hard to stand in the same room.

Her sense of entitlement is also expressed in her treatment of others, as she has the tendency to be dismissive of others’ needs and wishes. Because she’s so used to things being catered to her, she often lacks consideration of how her actions and words may affect others. She has gotten slightly better at this since her first year at Ogden, but she’s still prone to condescending statements and backhanded comments behind that chipper southern accent. 

On a similar note, Deja is very much an instigator, often stirring up drama as a form of personal entertainment. She’s the type to air out someone’s dirty laundry or stage a public display, giving little thought to the consequences of her actions because she finds it amusing. Depending on her mood, however, she may go out of her way to help someone else out, but this is typically due to guilt, pity, or pure boredom. Her flair for drama contributes to her image as someone who doesn’t value others as much as herself, but she does this with  a generally high-spirited disposition that leaves some people reeling. With a cheery southern charm but a questionable moral compass, it’s difficult for other students to comprehend the nepo baby’s motives. Does her distance from the real world give her an unfortunate lack of good sense, or is she really just a mean-spirited person at heart?
