and if i say he didn't turn solely from love but grief as well? his whole trip to the underworld is that of bargaining death with gods themselves. The fates are not just whispering doubt into his mind during 'Doubt comes in,' but furthering the fourth stage of grief, 'depression.' reminding him of what he has lost, changing his perception of the world that he held at the beginning of the tale, the sweet innocent of what the world could be rather than Eurydice's reality of what the world truly is. His grief causes his turn not for acceptance but for one last moment of knowing she genuinely loved him enough to follow him back through the treacherous walk back from hell, that she forgave him wholeheartedly for focusing so much on his song to fix what was broken in the world for her and everyone that he got distracted by her hunger, that she loved him truly as much as he loved her. His turn was an acceptance of her fate mixed with an unconditional love for her

Hades gives Orpheus a trial he knows he himself could never succeed at, but it isn’t just that Hades knows he would turn around. Hades has been failing this trial every single year. He shows up too early. He turns too soon. He is so full of doubt that even the natural order of the world, that Persephone will return to him, is not something he can trust. Hades would fail the trial he has given Orpheus, and he already has. All alone, his blood runs thin.
