i need to make a tumblr blog of "funny linux log messages"
WNM: Disassociation Imminent - Disassociation Timer 0
error: 'long long long' is too long for GCC
i thought i had enough RAM and didn't make a swap partition, thank fuck i didn't use xfs
There is so many free things on Linux but before you can use them, you always has to prove you are worthy to the god inside your computer by spending a whole afternoon on old forum trying to understand why everyone had the same issue as you but nobody knew how to fix it.
chat what WM should I switch to on my desktop
which wm
WindowMaker (well, GNUstep entirely; like NeXTSTEP)
Compiz (funny 3D effects, highly customizable, no dock included tho)
Fluxbox (use this on my chromebook, kinda like openbox but much more powerful)
CWM (current on desktop, very minimal, no window decorations, keyboard focused)
Ratpoison (tiling WM entirely keyboard focused. prolly has a learning curve)
somehow patch amiwm to work with a modern compiler (very similar to AmigaOS)

Admittedly I barely write code but why is it that even people who are enthusiastic about Linux and open-source will defend VSCode and insist on using it.
Like dude you are literally using the Microsoft code editor. Find something better, or you'll have to in a few years anyway once it enshittifies a bit more.
⚠️ INTEL MICROCODE BUG ⚠️
hi frens me again :3
just a quick PSA for anyone running newer Intel CPUs, their latest microcode update your system won't boot past the bootloader if you updated to the latest microcode version. (source)
for now the easiest work around is to add a package exclusion to your system so you can keep updating without breaking anything. (thank u limine and snapper i love you)
For my fellow arch users:
Open /etc/pacman.conf and add in IgnorePkg = intel-ucode under the [options] section like this:
If you already have any exclusions, just add it in after with a space separating them.
Then run sudo pacman -Syu and you should see it being excluded fom your update list. You should remove it later once everything is all good but this is a bandaid solution.
Please reblog to spread awareness!
linuxposting tends to be frustrating on this site because on one hand I am deeply aware that even among people willing to switch it's enough that one program that they use on daily basis does not work on Linux, it's enough to be a deal breaker, and this results in this mismatch of experiences where for one person switching is extremely maddening endeavour while for others they go "hey it was incredibly simple for me what gives" and for both happens to be true and they both end up talking over each other because for both of them this was their exact lived experience.
there's also another annoyance where you see posts that do point out the material conditions for why adoption of linux on desktop computers is so low (my program doesn't work -> OS is not adopted by users -> people writing programs don't make a linux version because of seemingly too much effort for the number of users) and they're true, but also they attract a certain population of users which treat this as an invitation to rant on the linux community and the obnoxiousness, and how some linux user dared to suggest to switch linux at them. and what now, do I reblog this with the comment of "yes I am one of the good ones" or similar. am I supposed to provide eternal tech support without complaining because if I complain once I will be labelled as the obnoxious linux user and this will reflect on the wider linux community.
anyway if you find linux users annoying, try dealing with windows users.
One nice thing about running a Linux gimmick blog is that your mutuals self-select.
I still dual-boot myself because I do not feel like having to worry about whether game X or application Y will run if I'm in a hurry, though on Windows I use stuff like Firefox, Libreoffice, and Kdenlive rather than proprietary equivalents.
Using linux is funny. Linux is either a penguin or a transgender fox. My de is a dragon. My wm is an owl holding a candle. My terminal is a kitty. My two file manager is a dolphin and a duck. Until i learn vim my text editor is a bird. My browser is another fucking fox. My drawing app is a robot mouse(?), my image editor is a dog whose name is a slur. I not using a laptop i own a fucking zoo.

i got a 4k monitor and is this why every gui ever has looked so cramped for years. once again i think software should be developed on the oldest CPUs possible with integrated graphics and 1080p monitors
sincerely,
i daily drove an hp compaq elite with an intel duo 2-core CPU (released in 2008), from 2022 until two weeks ago and for a time connected to a 1600x900 monitor. old hardware not only exists but STILL FUNCTIONS and bears real workloads. i shipped python packages from that thing. open source means, among many things, anyone can make software from computers not paid for by a startup or a tech giant
in an icy house, without windows and without apples, lives a very special penguin
i never thought i would be genuinely interested in the specific usage of the clipboard under different display servers, yet here i am
Tux lego
You see, i am the only good™ linux user who knows the right™ way to do things™

exciting new innovations in software engineering, they've managed to come up with something worse than 'just paste this random curl command into your terminal'
