to anyone in the areas impacted by the wildfire smoke, my #1 biggest piece of advice as someone whos been dealing with wildfire smoke in the NW united states for years, is build yourself a Corsi-Rosenthal Cube
they perform as well as expensive HEPA air cleaners, and are comparatively VERY inexpensive. all you need is a box fan, 4 air filters, a piece of cardboard, and some duct tape!!!!
i think it took us maybe a half hour to put ours together, if that, and we replace the filters every 3 months. it's really made a HUGE difference, both when the air quality is bad, but also with our allergies
Saw these easy to read instructions on Twitter. Stay safe 💚
where i am, a box fan and the filters run about $20 each, so if $100 is too much of a stretch at the moment, get the fan and one filter. tape the filter to the intake side of the fan, all the way around. this is also good if your space is small and a 20" cube won't fit.
Got sad today because two sixth grade students shared some inside joke that was so funny they collapsed against each other in giggles and I was hit with a massive wave of “I’ll never be young again.”
Got happy today because one of those same sixth graders (they’re seventh graders now) approached me after seeing me have a irrepressible giggle with a friend and said “you and [my friend] are just like me and [his friend], you can’t stop laughing.”
This is genuinely so important. If the only people a kid can look up to are serious and authoritative 100% of the time, kids start to assume that they have to abandon whimsy, imagination, and silliness to grow up and to be taken seriously. Don’t do it. Stay silly.
I finally remembered in time
I made this for the weekly prompt on LU Discord, the prompt was "Water" and ofc I had to do Wind jsjsjsjs
Wind's shadow is a little off but I think it's ok, some mistakes makes it better jsjs.
Also, finally I think that my artblock is over let's goooooo xD (finally the requests and my au soon jsjsjsj)
ALT AND SKETCHES ARE UNDER THE CUT

I have done nothing but teleport bread learn how to draw Caine for three days
Blessssssssss sm-baby's expression sheet for being a great point of reference <3
I had to physically restrain myself from adding eyelids\eyebrows just to see if I can convey the expression I'm aiming for without them and hey it's tough wow, who would've thought
Also big fan of the idea of his teeth sharpening whenever he get especially distressed. Because visual representation of inner turmoil is always interesting + fangs are fun and cool, come on
The duality of "Grace"
There is something special about the fact that, for all the duration of the film and in the book too, no one ever calls Grace with his given name. It's always his last name, always Grace.
It's significant in relation to his life on earth, because it creates a distance. In some cultures more than others, but learning someone's name and start using it on the regular is always the first step to truly know someone, to get close to them. You can understand so much of two people's relationship by the way they say eachother's name. And Grace has no one that even starts to do that, no one that gets close enough to make that first step. Even for the people he cares about the most, his students, he's just "Professor Grace". No one knows anything about his passions, his hobbys, what he dislikes, or anything about his childhood. For them, to call him by his surname it's comparable to put a wall between them and him, a way to keep considering him disposable.
But it's the opposite in his relationship with Rocky, because Grace is the only name Rocky knows, and given that he can't speak english, it's specified in the book that he uses the literal Eridian word for "grace" to refer to him. Not only Rocky always calls him by name, but uses a word that for both Humans and Eridians means blessing, salvation, love, goodness. His surname is not used to create distance, but to eliminate it. To use it it's a sign of affection and love, but also, while the story goes on, it becomes literal.
Because in the bible, God's grace is given willingly and freely, it's God's act of love for humanity. Grace was forced on the mission regardless of his feelings and desires, there was no love behind it, his life wasn't given, but sacrificed. Instead, he is the "saving grace" of Rocky and Erid, because he chooses to selflessly exchange his life for Rocky's, and by extension, Erid's.
His surname, and how it's meaning and use evolves during the story, contains all he is, what he was to the people of earth and what he is to Rocky and his people. It encloses who he chose to be, when he finally had the possibility to.
Tips for writing someone dying of sepsis, as a person who survived it:
1. It fucking HURTS!!! Wherever the infection is will be red hot to the touch, and also be in extreme pain. My infection was in my left ankle and if I tapped my left foot on the ground, I would be crying in pain
2. They are not able of having in depth conversations. The infection messes with your head, even if it is far away from your brain. For me, I was so incredibly tired all the time. You could talk to me, but I felt like I was living in molasses the whole time. It was very, very hard for me to hold a conversation with anyone
3. The person is sick in EVERY WAY. I was throwing up constantly, I could barely keep food down, and anything I did eat made me feel sick afterwards. I was also so weak that getting myself into my kitchen from my bedroom would wind me. My apartment is less than 700 square feet. It is not a far distance between the 2
4. The gut feeling. I was keenly aware something was wrong. I knew, in my heart of hearts, that I was dying. Its hard to describe other than your body is telling you "youre about to die"
5. If it’s a modern setting, they will give you SO MUCH IV FLUID in the hospital. SO MUCH. Your kidneys need it to help flush out the toxins. I had to get up to pee literally every single hour for two full days, which was practically torture.
They should have seen that coming
Yall????? omfg???? If you're a historical artist you NEED to look at what I just found because A BUNCH OF ORIGINAL SOURCES ON CLOTHING RANGING FROM MEDIEVAL TIMES TO THE 20TH CENTURY??? WITH CLEAR PHOTOS AND VERBAL EXPLANATIONS??? AND THEY'RE SORTED IN CHRONOLOGICAL ORDER WITHIN THE CENTURIES TOO????????

I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again but it is absolutely an example of civilizational inadequacy that only deaf people know ASL
“oh we shouldn’t teach children this language, it will only come in handy if they [checks notes] ever have to talk in a situation where it’s noisy or they need to be quiet”
My mom learned it because she figured she’ll go deaf when she gets old
My family went holiday SCUBA diving once, and a couple of Deaf guys were in the group. I was really little and I spent most of the briefing overcome with the realization that while the rest of us were going to have regulators in our mouths and be underwater fairly soon, they were going to be able to do all the same stuff and keep talking.
The only reason some form of sign language is not a standard skill is ableism, as far as I can tell.
For anyone interested in learning, Bill Vicars has full lessons of ASL on youtube that were used in my college level classes.
https://www.youtube.com/user/billvicars
and here’s the link to the website he puts in his videos:
https://www.lifeprint.com/
Update: you guys this is an amazing resource for learning asl. Bill Vicars is an incredible teacher. His videos are of him teaching a student in a classroom, using the learned vocabulary to have conversations.
Not only is the conversation format immersive and helpful for learning the grammar, but the students make common mistakes which he corrects, mistakes I wouldn’t have otherwise know I was making.
He also emphasizes learning ASL in the way it’s actually used by the Deaf community and not the rigid structure that some ASL teachers impose in their classrooms
His lesson plans include learning about the Deaf community, which is an important aspect of learning ASL. Knowing how to communicate in ASL without the knowledge of the culture behind it leaves out a lot of nuances and explanations for the way ASL is.
Lastly, his lessons are just a lot of fun to watch. He is patient, entertaining, and funny. This good natured enthusiasm is contagious and learning feels like a privilege and not a chore
And it’s all FREE. Seriously. If you’ve ever wanted to learn ASL

Woah, what a great idea!
For people that couldn't watch the video, it's a way to rate public places and businesses and share info on access for wheelchair users.
This is Accessibility!!!
I got the app and plan to use it to rate basically everywhere I go, especially as I don't use a wheelchair. I am excited to review places and keep an eye out for accessibility so I can help people navigate the community easier without having to research the places themselves!
