do i spend all my money on dvds yes or no
[image ID: a ballpoint-pen sketch, portraying a figure in three-quarters view facing the right. the figure's face is relaxed, its right-eyelid drooping slightly, its mouth open. the right side of its face appears bruised. its hair is straight and somewhat messy, nearly shoulder-length. it looks young.
the sketch is drawn on a yellow-ochre ground, and the background is painted red using a marker. /.End ID]
me as a teenager: man it sucks to have no privacy or autonomy but i guess its for a good reason. when i turn 18 i will realise how young i was and understand why they did all that.
me as an adult: teenagers are an oppressed class, their abuse is normalised and systemic and they need to start killing people
You just teleported to the last movie you watched! how is it going?

the irredeemable pervert is generally well regarded among their friends for their insightful thoughts and all around pleasant demeanour
You can really tell who’s never experienced poverty and food insecurity when it comes to discussions around food costs and how unhealthy food is cheaper. Some fucker always comes in with the price of like… lettuce or… apples. And it’s like yeah bitch but can you work an 11 hour shift after eating some salad and an apple!?! Find me something cheaper, and more filling than the broke ass staples of boxed mac and cheese, hot dogs, noodles, bread, beans, and rice. I’ll wait.
It also ignores the mental toll that poverty takes like maybe your home made veggie filled recipe isn’t crazy expensive but it also involves prep time and cooking time and organization in terms of fresh food that a lotta poor people can’t manage.
Not to mention if you can only afford to get to the store once every couple weeks via bus or cab then you can’t keep fresh veg on deck.
But ya know.. poor people are just dumb and lazy.
The other tell (to me) that someone has never experienced poverty or food insecurity is when people are viscerally disgusted by the idea of eating anything past expiration date, God forbid food that was pulled out of the garbage.
I have probably eaten more free food than food I’ve paid for. Because I don’t care if it’s expired or from the trash, as long as it passes the look test, smell test, and taste test, it’s fine.
40% of food in this country literally just goes to landfills because it’s more profitable to destroy edible food that won’t sell than it is to give it away/heavily discount it before it goes out of date.
We could enormously cut down on both food waste and hunger if there were laws passed making extremely heavy discounts on nearly out of date food mandatory.
I hate the push that you can quit addictions by pure willpower because it perpetuates the idea that people who can't have committed a moral failing of some kind. We all may know some people who did quit an addiction cold turkey, and with no aid, you may be one of them. And that's fantastic, but it is not the norm. It is more than okay to need help to quit an addiction. Relapse is also part of the process. Many people relapse several times before they are able to quit for good. Let's have compassion.
not only that but depending on the substance quitting cold turkey can kill you
ALCOHOL. It’s a very common dependence and cold turkey CAN KILL YOU. A lot of people don’t know this. Doctors can literally prescribe beer in the ER to save a life.
Be careful out there.
Stresses me out so bad when authors who obviously don't drink write characters drinking. Omfg girl he is like 27 shots deep.
I feel like not enough people realize that people under enormous strain act really really fucking Weird
There was a parenting-kids-with-trauma book I remember running into around 2010 (I was not and am still not a parent, but I am an older sibling) that had a lovely little slogan I like to quote all the time:
“It’s not about the Cheerios.”
This was in reference to a story about a kid flipping the HELL out into a full-blown panic about running out of their favorite cereal. Not a tantrum, not a whine-fest, but an all-hands-on-deck, code-red, world-is-ending blowup.
The kid had originally come from a very unstable situation and experienced food deprivation. The new adoptive parents were stumped, because look at all the other food! You’re safe! We can get the Cheerios tomorrow!
But it wasn’t really about the Cheerios, it was about that first flicker of unease triggering all the old trauma. From the outside, it looked ridiculous. To the trauma-trained reaction of the kid’s brain, it made perfect sense.
Human brains are weird, and we’re all out here trying to survive. Sometimes our brains do this in socially acceptable, convenient ways. But not often.
(The book was titled “Beyond Logic, Consequences or Control” I think, I’ll look it up and edit this in a bit.)

The Fandom when a character who has suffered through abuse isn't the Perfect Victim: If you think about, the real villain is actually—
If your system doesn't account for the fact that Parents Are Going To Be Abusive/Neglectful/Insufficient then it objectively sucks I'm sorry I don't make the rules
Monitored bank accounts for those under 18. Requiring parental consent for medical procedures. Parental controls on personal devices. "We won't teach this at school because parents are supposed to address it at home." Anything that puts all of the child's power onto the parents' hand, anything that assumes parents are going to inherently do enough of a good job no one else needs to interfer, every single one of these IS going to be used by controlling, neglectful or unprepared parents and already are, and if the system did not account for that very real, tangible, dangerous tendency, then it's not worth fucking anything. You shouldn't make things "for the youth"/with children in mind if you are going to overlook this painfully common aspect of their lives u_u
