They’re childhood “friends” (well, their parents are friends and decided their kids should be too…) who spent most of their lives hating each other. Once they were both drafted and placed in the same base for basic, they started actually trying to kill each other, even at the expense of their mission/teammates.

When they were separated and placed onto different teams (Matthias on Blue, Ina on Red) they were…. Not much more useful. Because of how cowardly Matthias is, he often flat out refused orders if he thought it’d put him in harms way. He generally hates being part of the violence/fighting leading him to go AWOL one too many times for the Project’s liking. With her short temper, Ina was never particularly liked by any of the teams she was placed with. (To be fair, she didn’t like them either) She’s very distrustful of everyone around her, and refuses to cooperate if she doesn’t think it’ll benefit her in any way.

When they were first reunited in the drop off point, the rivalry continued exactly as it had for their entire lives… and that was part of the problem; they both realised that they actually had MISSED the other. Maybe it was missing the familiarity, maybe it was the routine they’d fallen into with trying to kill each other, maybe it was missing Ina’s snarky remarks, maybe it was missing Matthias’ random unrelated factoids…. Etc etc. Ina slowly began to tolerate Matthias’ presence without making prickly comments, Matthias slowly began to tolerate Ina’s without trying to pick a fight with her.

When it came down to it, despite having spent their entire lives fighting each other, they decided it was just a waste of time to keep on with it at this point. Of course, they’re far from best friends, still upholding a pretty intense rivalry, but they’re much closer to friends than they’d ever been before :-)
