âThey really need to come up with a better place to get coffee here. Itâs like they donât even take it seriously.â Callie said mostly to herself as she looked at her coffee cup.Â
âMaybe you could work there and show them how itâs done.â His sigh was soft as he lifted his own cups to lips but paused to speak again. âThough making it yourself is entirely out of the question, right?â

i have everyoneâs replies drafted [ eight to do ] but i wonât be able to get to them until later tonight after the carnival is over [ sorry! ] but i promise iâm working on them!!!Â
âI was five when it happened, My right hook wasnât as good as it is now.â She shrugged.Â
"Thatâs no excuse,â he huffed and shook his head in disapproval. Granted if others had an easier youth Finn could only sympathize with those similar to his own despite his words spoken in a joking manner. When he was five... he wasnât five anymore but he knew how to fend for himself then. âMaybe your payback is yet to come. Thatâs fair, isnât it?â
âWhat? Oh, no! No no no no, Iâve⌠never shot one before,â Alice admitted, laughing nervously at even the idea of even holding one of those things. She would look ridiculous, and that was something Alice loathed doing. âNot even a paintball gun!â
âSo?â Finn moved out of the way to allow his new roommate a chance. âThe pellets are small and the gun is tethered to the banister. You canât hurt anyone, not even yourself. You can only lose but thereâs a trick to getting it right. Go on.â
âI missed that lecture in school.â She probably did too. Instinctively Shelby leaned forward and allowed him to steal a kiss. It was selfishness that drove her to steal some of it back for herself. She probably tasted like cotton candy for all she had consumed. âI was looking around. Getting a feel for the place and some of the people.â It wasnât entirely a lie but Shelby wasnât going to divulge the secret of her blackmail to Finn. With the second bear in tow she moved closer and brushed her shoulder against his. âWhat if I blow in your ear while you try to shoot?â
The answer didnât settle right at first [ the time didnât match the deed ]. If it was anyone else he would have pressed for more explanation but for Shelby his trust was easily given that the suspicion disappeared a heartbeat after it came. He was too focused on the target and the strategy to win, how near she was to him and the lingering sweetness on his lips. He leaned into her touch, head resting on the edge of her shoulder before returning to aim. âYou want me to lose? I guess Iâll have to do my best and prove you canât distract me.â

Leo could feel himself getting defensive, but he suppressed the urge to sass the guy back. âBe my guest,â he acquiesced, making an exaggerated gesture of moving out of the way. The other male seemed overconfident to Leo, which put him off slightly.
A quick smile and no spoken âthank youâ Finn tried his money against the machine. Had he the luxury of video games when he was younger, his hand-eye coordination could have easily be envied. This wasnât as simple as point-and-shoot, aim-and-fire. Pinball required patience and timed reactions Finn rarely exercised unless the circumstances were right. He lost before barely making half of the other boyâs score and with it his temper. His hand smashed down on the glass in anger and quickly stepped to the side. âHow did you do it?â
Alice had wanted to spend some time getting to know her new roommate, since they would be spending a lot of time together anyway. When he pitched the shooting gallery, Alice wasnât that sure, since she kind of thought guns were gross, but she agreed to watch. When she saw him completely obliterate the star, her jaw dropped. She had to force it shut before shaking her head and answering âIâm not taking that bet, Iâd lose. Remind me never to piss you off.â
âYeah, youâd lose,â he agreed. He laughed a little too hard at her remark, a little too genuine for the double meaning it meant to him. Had she known that was how to win the rigged shootout she might not have thought it but it was still amusing. âItâs just a game. Why donât you try it? See if you can do it. Iâll even tell you how to win.â
âNobody ever robs restaurants. Bars, liquor stores, gas stations⌠you get your head blown off sticking up one of them. Restaurants on the other hand, you catch with their pants down. Theyâre not expecting to get robbed.â
-Pulp Fiction (1994)
âHow ironic.â Shelby appeared something like an apparition with an overstuffed bear in her arms. Of course it was won by her room mate and of now skill of Shelbyâs own but it didnât matter. Her arms were wrapped around the trunk of it and her chin pillowed into the head. He was always better at carnival games than she was. âYou should totally do it again. Then we should get some cotton candy and make out on the ferris wheel.â
âI donât think thatâs what irony is.â His face was already beaming at the sound of her voice and brightened as he took in the full scene. How natural it was to lean in over her new friend and steal a kiss. How it spoke volumes to worry from moments before wiped away. âI like that idea,â he agreed and handed off his bear to focus back on the air pellet gun. âI was looking for you but I figured after a while youâd find me. I knew was right. Whereâve you been?â
âAmusing for people who werenât scared by the clown from It by their friends older brother.â Kennedy began to walk. âYou never had a fear of clowns or asshole people in your life that would scare you?â
âNo fear of clowns but Iâve known shitheads who did more than scare you. A person painted in makeup isnât anything like that, even if itâs from... that.â With the final word Finnâs mouth snapped close and stopped anything else [ any admission he didnât understand the reference ] from letting loose. âStill not worth the punch. Sounds more like you should punch the people that scared you.â

Leo shrugged, leaning his back against the machine. âI donât know, maybe lying and saying you saw nothing?â he chuckled before shaking his head. âThe pain had no gain. I didnât even beat the high score.â
âYeah, I saw everything. So what, youâre gonna give up now?â Finn continued his approach until he was close to the other, certainly too close to be comfortable and asserted himself in front of the arcade game. âIf youâre gonna give up so easily mind if I try?â
âPerfect shot,â he joked and held the obliterated piece of paper up to the incandescent lights. The massive hole in the middle once depicted a star and thankfully the point of the game was to remove it entirely. Even if he didnât have a fancy degree declaring his smarts Finn could attest to his improvisation to achieve his goals, and to show for it: a shredded and holey mark and a large stuffed prize. [ If only he had the chance to show off as he intended. ] Â âBet you I could do it again,â he spoke turning to the person next to him.Â
Kennedy quickly got dressed and walked over to the other male. âHave you met a good clown?â She asked him.
âYeah, I have,â he replied. A version of what he spoke was true but perhaps not in the same imagery. Finn gestured to the hall, an after you insistence to get moving. âI wouldnât hurt the thing just for being a clown. Itâs a job, right? Theyâre supposed to be amusing.â
Leo was just ten thousand points away from beating the high score on the Simpsons pinball machine when he lost his last ball. âSHIT!â he exclaimed, hitting the side of the machine with hand. He then flicked his wrist, waving his hand back and forth.
That hurt.
He then looked up to see someone watching him. âExactly how long have you been standing there?â
âWhat answer would make you feel comfortable?â The smile was slow to come to his face while he looked back and forth between man and machine. His arms originally folded across his chest fell to his side as he moved closer. âYou were invested. That fun to hurt yourself over?â
âOkay, okay, Iâll go to the carnival! Just let me put some clothes on.â Kennedy said. She looked at the person and smiled. âOh, and if a clown comes up to me, Iâm punching it in the face.â
âDonât make it sound like someoneâs pulling your leg,â he remarked. He set himself against the door, with brows knit together. Who left their door open undressed unless they were begging for attention. How many times did she do this to just be âhappened uponâ. âBesides, what did a clown ever do to you?â

hello everyone! iâm jules and iâm so excited to be writing with you guys! i apologize in advance if iâm on at odd hours for my schedule is never consistent, but i promise iâm open for any plots or ideas! iâm coming in with my little trouble maker âfinnâ [not his real name ;) ] and beneath the cut is a little info about my bby~   apologies for any repeat info if you already read shelbyâs intro. sev beat me to it.
[ content tw for physical abuse, emotional abuse, maltreatment by a parental figure, and underage sexual activity ]
finn is originally from in wichita, kansas, though itâs possible he wasnât born there. he doesnât know. itâs where his foster family was living when they took him in, and it wasnât a pretty part of the city either. his foster parents were from the slums, and you guessed it! they were taking children in for the checks.
his parents didnât care what he did outside the house, but inside was strict to the point where locks were kept on the fridge so he and his four foster siblings never wasted anything that would cost them money. all five children slept in the same room. anything they broke was paid for in beatings.Â
and there were favorites who got away with or received more though who it was changed from day to day, week to week. there were times finn received favor for two days, but then faced the harshest of beatings for the next two weeks. it was a rivalry that often broke into fights, so they never bonded in their hardships and finn never connected with them.
but he had shelby, and she was his connection and safety. when they young, his attachment to her became dependent quickly, an unhealthy dependency, but their relationship was what helped finn bear life at home.
and with their connection, emotions grew quickly. it was no surprise they explored together, did everything together. explored abandoned homes in their neighborhood, committed petty theft from gas stations [ though the targets became higher priority as they got older ]. they were rarely separated. it wasnât long until they began exploring themselves, in their early teens.
it was shelby who insisted they leave. after defending herself from her motherâs boyfriend, she showed up with blood splatters on her face, and the sight alone was more than enough to convince finn to drop everything and run. at the age of seventeen, he dropped out of high school and they began living for themselves.Â
since, their income has been through criminal jobs. from small cons [ iâll pay anything to get my ring back ] to little heists, it was a means that finn thrived in, as he could take for himself and for shelby without facing consequences [ at least none that he foresaw ], fighting for it, or hoping today the pantry was accidentally left unlocked. he could take it and win.
they are equal partners, and finn will not do any rash decision without shelbyâs consent, that is when it comes to heists. finn is a very angry boy who becomes overly protective or possessive when he believes himself threatened [ especially over shelby ], and he sometimes perceives insults even when none were given.Â
over the past two years their jobs have escalated to full robbery, their most recent one being a small bank which earned more attention from police than they were comfortable with. to stay out of sight, they came up with new names [ they have so many ] and came to safe haven until they can start up again.
