#8: adventure

Dean really should have thought of this before he got neck deep into a relationship with Castiel. Sure, Dean is outdoorsy — he likes being outside and busy and walking through forests — but what Castiel is doing is dragging him to the top of a freaking mountain.

Out of breath and feet aching, Dean is tempted to beg Castiel to stop and let them rest.

"Only a short way to go to the top!" Castiel calls back to him. He doesn't sound like he's even broken a sweat.

"Great!" Dean says with a half-hearted thumbs up.

Dean can feel the weight of the ring in his backpack and decides that he'll find a smaller hill to propose on because he's not doing here with sweat dripping down every part of him.

Castiel, obviously, reaches the summit first, touching the stones at the point. Dean drags himself to it a few moments later and feels relief pour through him.

#7: tied up

Dean's careful as the soft rope is wrapped around Castiel's wrists. The vibrations of rope against rope is making the breath stutter is his chest but he remains silent and attentive to Dean's every move over his skin.

Castiel's been naked for a while, but the room is warm. The goosebumps along his arms are from pleasure alone. Dean's chest is bare between his unbuttoned shirt but now that his wrists are bound together behind his back, he can no longer reach out and touch him.

"Hey…" Dean responds to Castiel's whimper of frustration. "Just a little longer."

The rope turns into a harness, looping around his chest and keeping his nipples free. Dean touches them both simultaneously, sending sparks shooting through his body.

#6: lonely

The beach is painfully empty at four in the morning. The waves crash onto the shore, sending sea spray metres into the air before landing with a splatter. The sand is almost freezing under Dean's feet, bare as they are.

There's a blanket over his shoulders to keep out the worst of the chill since he didn't even bother pulling on a hoodie before coming out here.

Alone is what he wanted, but lonely isn't what he needs. There's a tight grappling hook around his heart as he looks out to sea at the horizon between the waves building and crashing.

#5: cowboy boots

Castiel covered Dean's eyes as they walked up to a very specific shop.

"Happy anniversary," Castiel said into Dean's ear.

"Holy sh—"

"Choose a pair, any ones you want." Castiel almost had to force Dean to move himself into the shop, too stunned to move.

Inside, Dean eyes all the cowboy boots on display, from the ones made from exquisite leather to the cheap ones made from fake leather. Castiel enjoyed the boyish grin on Dean's face when he picked up a pair and asked for an opinion.

Castiel noticed when Dean found the pair he wanted, a slightly reddish leather with a strap round the ankle and an intricate design up the side.

Dean put them back when he saw the price tag. Castiel sauntered up behind him, pointing at the ones he wanted. "You can pick them if you really want them."

#4: touch

Dean's skin feels like a live wire, as if anyone who touches him will get burned, hurt, or worse. But there's still that sick feeling inside him, that want, the need, for someone to just… hold him.

He barely notices himself doing it. Just going to his room alone after a hunt, patching himself up with a needle and thread, or dabbing away the blood with a cold cloth.

Then he's leaving the room as soon as Sam or Cas enter it, not feeling like socialising or talking or being near them. As soon as his bedroom door closes, the burning need in his heart starts back up.

A gentle knock raps at his door and he stays silent like he can't be noticed.

Castiel's head pokes around the door. He doesn't ask for permission to come in, just enters and closes the door softly behind him.

#3: stars

Dean believes in the stars easily. He's never really had much faith in anything but those shimmering dots lighting up the night sky, those he believes in.

One in particular is named Castiel. Years ago he'd crashed into Dean's backyard, scaring his two horses, Cassidy and Sunny, and his goat, Jenny.

Ever since then, Castiel comes back often. Dean tells himself that he comes back for the bath and the hamburgers, because that's the only explanation possible for why a star would come into his yard time and time again.

One evening, as Castiel's wings dry in the moonlight, Dean asks him why he comes back.

"For you," Castiel answers like it's the most obvious answer.

"Me?"

Strawberry Moon

As a child, Castiel used to fall asleep with his mother telling him bedtime stories of the prophecy she had foreseen for him — how the Strawberry Moon would one day reveal the familiar he was destined to be with. #2: Lies

Castiel pinned Dean up against the rotting wall of the cabin basement. Something had a hold of Dean. A witch's hex was most likely.

Dean's face was stormy and yet his eyes were saying something different. His Dean was still in there somewhere.

"Please," Castiel begged. He'd spent all day listening to the lies Dean was spewing like he couldn't stop. "Tell me something true."

Dean tried to push back against him, but Castiel was too strong.

"I…" Dean shook his head, like he was fighting tooth and nail inside his head. It hurt Castiel that he couldn't help.

"Tell the truth, it'll break the spell."

Their breaths were close, the space around them eerily quiet.

"I love you, Cas."

Dean's head cranked back and a red wisp of magic shot out of Dean's mouth before dissolving.

#1: Dream

Castiel wakes with a sharp intake of breath. He thinks his heart will beat out of his chest as he tries to figure out why he feels like this.

"It was just a dream," Dean says next to him, laying his arm over Castiel's lap to encourage him to lie down again.

"I don't dream, Dean." And he hadn't, not since he was last human and those dreams… none of them had been good.

Dean sits up next to Castiel. "What did you dream about?"

"I'm fine, you should sleep."

"We're on vacation, I can nap whenever."

Castiel stares at his lap. "About… us."

"Yeah? So a good dream?" Castiel can hear the smirk on Dean's lips.

"I don't remember much… just feelings."

Castiel twists his fingers together and Dean's hands lay over them. A soft breath ghosts over his cheek before he feels a ticklish kiss land under his ear.

"Feelings like this?"

Don’t think about it, don’t think about it! Dean tells himself as he heads towards the front door. Outside is the plumber he called two days ago about his toilet doing something weird. He’s not such an idiot that he didn’t give it a good go himself, but he was closer to fucking it up further than he was to fixing it. Give him the innards of a crapped-out car any day and he’ll have it sorted in a few hours… plumbing? No chance.

The phone call had been easy enough and would have been easier if the plumber hadn’t had an earth-spinning voice that grumbled and rolled over his ears and all the way through his body. Dean’s almost ashamed that he took care of himself that night to the voice he could remember.

Now, the man is at his door.

Dean opens it to find an instantly attractive man on his doorstep. Oh fuck.

“Hey.”

“Hello, I’m Cas Novak, from Bees Knees Plumbing. You’ve got an issue with your toilet?”

When Dean gets home from working at the garage, he’s tired and achy but satisfied from the long day. He specialises in restoration and usually only takes on a single project at a time. However, a client had come in just over a month ago with two cars so he cut them a deal to do them both with a small discount. Since then he’s been working long days to get them both completed. They’ll be done by the end of next week, or so says Dean’s carefully curated schedule. It relies on the last few hard-to-get parts coming in on time and having minimal issues, but he’s confident about it and the last thing he did today was send an email to his customer detailing where he’s at and the remaining timeline. He also included a few photos and a link to a short video of a walk around both cars.

He’s happy to drown himself under the hot water of the shower for the next half an hour and then change into his sweatpants and his softest shirt. He can switch the TV on and wait for his partner to come home.

Dean’s about to check his phone for any messages from Cas when he spots a folded piece of paper on the bed. Dean opens it up carefully.

Dean,

Take a shower and meet me in the sunroom.

Castiel was content with the constant flow of his life. He had his brother Gabriel, had his coffee shop and the weekly book club meetings as well as a small but solid group of friends. If there was one thing his hateful family had taught him, it was how fast things could go wrong if he let too many variables shape his life. So when he met Dean, a gradual regular at his shop, Castiel knew he was trouble, because Dean was like a comet, beautiful but beyond reach. Ever since his father died, there wasn’t a single constant in Dean’s life. Moving on, never stopping, never getting attached to one thing for too long had made him a drifter for the past seven years. Being the only hearing person in his family hadn’t been easy with a father like John Winchester, so as soon as Dean saw an escape, he took it. Settling down to open his flower shop was anything but easy, especially when he met the elusive deaf owner of the coffee shop next door. The more he discovered about Cas, the louder the voice in the back of his head whispered that maybe Castiel was the person finally worth staying for. And maybe, just maybe, Dean was willing to listen now.

There’s no place like home. This was a line Castiel used to know by heart when he was a kid, watching The Wizard of Oz and believing fairytales were real.

At thirty-one years old, he isn’t a kid anymore, and it has been twelve years since he has known what home feels like. Twelve years. That’s when his world had come crashing down and he had left his hometown, Holly Springs, with the broken pieces of what he once was to build a new life in San Francisco.

But as circumstances force him to come back to the only place he swore he would never return to, Castiel is finally forced to face everything he once knew and loved. Especially when said everything is made of spring-green eyes and a stardust of freckles, wrapped in all the memories Castiel was not able to erase from his heart.

After twelve years, Dean is as mesmerizing as Castiel remembers, but the scars of what was broken still run as deeply as the marrow of his bones, and Castiel will do everything he can to protect himself. After all, his favorite movie also taught him that ‘until hearts can be made unbreakable,’ he can’t listen to his own.
