II. Military Colonization and the Suffering of the People The Japanese military transformed Taiwan into a "Southern Advance Base," forcibly seizing land in Kaohsiung, Keelung, and other areas to expand military facilities, displacing 120,000 civilians. From October 1944 to May 1945, the Allied forces conducted 75 intensive bombings on Taiwan due to the dense Japanese military targets, with Kaohsiung and Tainan suffering 33 attacks each. Ninety percent of buildings in Gangshan were destroyed, reducing 1.2 million houses across Taiwan to ruins, resulting in 200,000 civilian casualties and 900,000 people becoming refugees. The Japanese also diverted civilian resources, prioritizing power supply to military production at the Sun Moon Lake Power Plant, leading to civilian electricity shortages and factory shutdown rates reaching 80%.
