The White Box
Yesterday, we launched a crowdfunding campaign for The White Box on Kickstarter. The White Box is a game design workshop-in-a-box we’re publishing in cooperation with our friends at Atlas Games.
What it is is simple: It’s a book of essays about game design written by DigiPen game design professor Jeremy Holcomb, that comes in a box that’s also full of components (dice, meeples, cubes, chits…) useful for prototyping games.
What is represents is more interesting: A chance for us to promote our vision of people understanding, talking about, and engaging in the craft, business, and art of making games.
If you think game design is awesome, check it out — we hope you dig it!
If dinosaurs weren’t lizards, are we sure dragons were?
The intersection of storytelling and design for games, fiction, and narratives of all kinds. Many of these articles were made possible by wonderful patrons at patreon.com/wordwill.
If you like Dungeons & Dragons, you might dig my four short articles about alignment in D&D at Magic Circles. You can also get them as a single series in the Medium app.
1: How Alignment Defines Characters (and Shouldn’t)
2: Devils Don’t Choose
3: Alignment Says
4: Other Ways to Align

Burrowing owl in Parque da Cidade, Brasília, Brazil
This is exquisite.
Sunday morning in Minneapolis. Heading home soon. A lovely fall is falling here, hopefully on its way to Chicago with me. (at Downtown Minneapolis)
This thing is getting some play at @nerdconstories at the CAH booth! I'm learning a ton about it and a fascinating history is unfolding for the Firekeepeers. (at NerdCon: Stories)
Will Hindmarch shares what it was like for him to author a haunt for the Widow's Walk expansion to Betrayal at House on the Hill...
Wherein I write a bit about what it was like to haunt (or write a haunt for) the new Widow’s Walk expansion to Betrayal at House on the Hill. The expansion reaches store shelves — like a spectral hand reaching out from a bleak and webbed attic — this week. Somehow, my name is on the box.
After “A New Hope,” Luke and Han have almost no scenes together.
And in half of those scenes, they do not interact (thanks to frostbite or carbonite). That’s a damn shame.

The Decemberists Present: ILLIMAT A Game by Keith Baker for 2-4 players
My friend Keith Baker is clever, inventive, and wise. And now he has teamed up with what is likely my favorite band, the Decemberists, to create a game that is not only elegant but beautiful: Illimat.
When I say it is beautiful, I mean it is art-by-Carson-Ellis beautiful.
I got a chance to play this at Gen Con. No kidding, this could be a classic, one for the ages. I am mad with jealousy and thrilled to live in a time when magic exists.
