Xenobia listened to Beckett intently as she spoke, and as words came to quell her inquiry her expression softened into some sort of sick, smug grin of satisfaction. âYouâve been more than amiable during this negotiation - why, I could hand you what you seek on a silver platter and it still wouldnât measure up to your courtesy.â She drew her hand back and peered at Beckett for a second longer, then drummed one of her grotesque tentacles against the ground like a testy cat might thump his tail. âAll right,â she said finally. âI know how *apprehensive* you may be about all this, but rest assured, thereâs no need for us to cross sharp wordsâŠor shrapnel.â She gestured broadly toward Beckettâs hip and turned on spiraling stalks to squelch sickeningly back toward the doorway. âCome, now,â she said, and then, quickly, âI feel nothing sentimental toward the Ladyâs possessions - through the Rift she afforded me power greater than the likes of some garish baubles could ever hope to bear. Out of respect for her I may reclaim whatever it is youâre looking for, in time - thatâs not a problem, Iâm sure, if whatever you seek really is just a token for information.â
What a wicked smile she wore.
Reluctantly, Beckett moved her hands away from her holsters. She really didnât like that smile, but she made her decision. AlthoughâŠby the sounds of it, her contractor could be in trouble. Ah well, as long as she got the information, she couldnât care less what happens to him.
âWell, if thatâs the case, then lead the way,â she responded, walking towards the door. Maybe she should start a conversation? Make things feel less tense? Yeah, Beckett didnât see why not. âLady Devaedra has a lotta things that are really special to her, doesnât she?â
Xenobia glanced back at Beckett as the rocketeer posed a question, and with that her smile spread coldly - whether she delighted in Beckettâs curiosity or some perceived discomfort was unclear. âLady Devaedraâs immortality gave her ample opportunities to amass a curious collection of curios, yes - would you believe me if I told you Iâm generally disinterested in them? Listen, seeâŠâ Xenobia paused as the pair came to one of the stairwells that wound downward toward the ground level of the estate, then veered sharply down a narrow corridor on her left. The darkness of the place seeped out of the cracks in the stone walls and filled the air. It was thick and oppressive, but the witch who drew upon its essence hardly seemed to notice. âOnly so much power can be harnessed through material means. Mundane and magically insignificant items can display power through opulence. I feel my Lady became complacent in the wealth of her political intrigue recently; she feasted on the forbidden magics of the Rift for so long, but even all the time in the world guided her close to the terminus of her personal studies.â The wicked eel swimming around Xenobiaâs shoulder bared its gnarled teeth at Beckett as she threw open a small door with a theatrical flourish. It swam ahead into the grand foyer, and its keeper gestured toward a chained door glowering out from between the double staircase that wound up either side of its doors. âThrough my studies here, the Lady delighted in ways to visibly display her power - she postured without rival. She reminds me of you and yours, I think: admirably determined, but restricted pathetically by some strange desire for recognition.â She sidled up beside the door and lay her hand on the black iron chain. âWhat sets her apart from you all most, I think, is her eagerness to transcend humanity. Your devotion to the flesh is puzzling. Oh, well. Far be it from me to manipulate.â What a lie she wove. She wrapped her fingers around the chain and turned away from Beckett, and from her gangly arms flowed a particular current of energy that swam over the heavy metal - until it wasnât metal, of course, and the links softened into some horrific, shadowy mockeries of leeches and shlap-shlapped disgustingly through holes bored into the walls and out of sight.
As they continued through the castle, Beckett couldnât shake the feeling of uneasiness. Devaedric things made her feelâŠwrong (she didnât know quite how to describe it). Just looking around reminded her of that. While their things were intriguing and held an incredible amount of value, the abnormal vibe that resonated off of them made her skin crawl.
âAhâŠâ Beckett responded, leaning away from the eel when it gnarled its teeth towards her. Was it gonna bite her? She certainly hoped not.
âYou make it sound like recognition is a bad thing.â The rocketeer leaned against the wall, crossing her arms. The stone was cold and damp against her back. âHey, everyoneâs different. Your desire toâŠâ she turned her head, gaze drifting over the witchâs tentacles, âchangeâŠyourself to an extent to a point where you arenât yourself anymore puzzles me too. I donât even want to know how that feels,â she muttered.
I hate this place. A muted look of disgust formed as she watched the leech-like creatures slither and squish into the walls, leaving trails of some black ooze dripping down the walls. Where were they going? Did they slink off to find some other dark dreary area to reside and maybe melt into a pile of goo? Whatever it was, Beckett didnât want to know. All she hoped was that they wouldnât see them again.
Xenobia cast the ironwrought door open with a dramatic flourish of her gangly arms, then veered into the passageway to descend the stairs that coiled into the chamber below. "Recognition is a tricky thing, I suppose," she responded, her commanding voice echoing along the dank walls of the stairwell. "Perhaps I might see value in it if my immediate goals were met. Perhaps that's what drove Lady Devaedra to posture in the company of decorated fellows and delight in the macabre of her houseguests' reactions. Oh, what a clever girl you are, making me think outside the box when you could just quiver in fear or simmer in silence. You really *aren't* the sanctimonious sort, are you?" Xenobia stopped and looked back at Beckett suddenly. Her violet tongue lulled between slightly open lips for a moment before she turned back down the path, smacking thoughtfully. "The sacrifices I've made have all been towards an end so visible to me that I can nearly reach out and touch it. I met an old witch once, a haggard thing with some gaudy baubles about her overcoat, and she chided me for my reluctance to shed my worldly form further - I'll show her." The witch pushed a much smaller door open at the bottom of the stairwell and slithered into a dark room. Within a moment, a handful of steel braziers came alight with brilliant violet flames. Coffers of various shapes and sizes lined the room: most were empty, with lids creaking on broken hinges and dressed in cobwebs, but a few remained sealed and in good shape. Xenobia's tentacles coiled tensely beneath her, forming a slimy, oily throne upon which she could observe Beckett from a distance. She fished a black key with a skull embedded along the butt of its narrow shaft and tossed it across the room. It bounced once with a metallic thunk and landed near Beckett's feet. "As you can imagine, most of the treasures here have been relocated, or lost in the ether, but perhaps you'll find what you're looking for. You had best make haste, I think - I'd like to reap the benefits of this arrangement sooner than later."
[ Sorry for the delay! I've been swept up in Irma's bullshit and things are just now returning to normal. I'll be back to writing! ]

The boughs of the trees to the left some fifty meters ahead of the wagon part, then the underbrush far beneath them rustle. The oblivious sort might mistake the disturbance for some kind of woodland creature, but Ramsayâs quick reaction to the movement may very well be fair for the threat his shipment faces.
Xenobia parts the veil of oak and pine and slithers quickly up onto the embankment. Her face is shrouded in a dark cowl, and the cloak draped over her body billows as her tentacles thrash wildly behind her. This outfit of hers is hardly a disguise, and though itâs rather ostentatious in its silken cloths and arcane stitching, it seems to serve its purpose as an equally outrageous witchâs travel regalia.

âEde..?â Ramsay only has a moment to speak before thereâs a loud clang and the cart starts slipping behind, Ede standing on the back of the horse that was pulling the shipment, but no longer. They held the valuables, eyes narrowed in a way that made it look like they were mocking the thug. âEde!â He had been double crossed.
With a salute, Ede turns back around and sits on the horse, kicking the sides and disappearing into the distance. The cart is still going and then Ramsay suddenly finds himself face first in the dirt. The cart had stopped. He growls and looks back, eyes growing twice their size at the green, oozing substance flowing down the sides of the road and leaving what seemed like chaos behind.Â

The cart stops pretty abruptly as its hooved engine whinnies past with the thief in tow. It jerks to the right and tilts upward, threatening to topple off the embankment. The writing tendrils seize it tighter and bring it down steady in a cloud of dust.
"Oh, damn the luck." Xenobia sounds livid. The grotesque, throbbing tentacles coiled around the wagon recede back into the earth, filling the rifts in the dirt with a foul-smelling, pestilent ooze. She turns her bare hand downward and stretches out her fingers to inspect her harpy nails, then scoffs and winds on her own awful tentacles toward Ramsay. After moving ahead several feet, she stops suddenly. This is the moment during which Ramsay tries to strike Xenobia, and she responds with a swift leap to her right to avoid it. Finally, she cracks a cold, stiff smile and speaks: "It seems your crafty partner has made away with my bargaining chip. Who was that? They had me fooled too, I think." She moves slowly across the road now, not nearing the ruffian at all anymore. "Unless you intend to help me find that person, I have no desire to stand here and chat with you about whatever scarce threats are knocking around in your head. If you want to fight, then fight, but spare me your paltry attempts at intimidation."
@wordsofspiteâ liked for a starter! Every day is the same as the last. Wake up, get dressed, talk to the boss, get your mission, choose your partner, and go out to complete it. The missions might change from âtake this to _____â to 'steal this from _____â, but it was always the same feeling.
Boredom. Thatâs what Ramsay felt. First starting out, this gig felt fun and energetic and amazing, but now it was just⊠boring. Always stealing, always delivering, always doing some stupid grunt work when his time could be better spent doing something awesome and cool.Â
The big boss didnât exactly trust Ramsay, not yet at least. The ruffian was a little tough to tell what to do. If he didnât like how you were doing things, heâd do things his way, which would most often end in violence. He could also, should he be given the right amount of trust, steal from the gang itself and take off- which Ramsay will admit, he hasnât not thought of doing that before.

Xenobia minded Beckettâs words carefully as she moved, then turned her eyes to survey the room and stopped on a dime. Her spindly arms folded across her chest, and her mouth opened a bit, and for a moment she looked like she was about to let loose some scathing remark. Suddenly, though, she turned on the coiling stalks of shadow that carried her, gaze still trained on the adventurer, and slunk silently toward one of the vanities left ajar.

The rocketeer kept her eyes on Xenobia as she slithered across the room, closer to her. When she stopped at the dresser, Beckett backed away, observing her actions. As much as sheâd love to open fire, she knew that starting a fight wasnât the best of options right now. She would just have to bear with it for now.
âWhatâs the deal?â she asked, her tone far from curious.. She didnât trust the witch, and she especially didnât trust making a deal with her, but she should at least hear what she has to offer. After all, Xenobia said that there was a price, and given her reputation, Beckett doubted that it wasnât going to be anything small.
Xenobia looked upon Beckett with a muted look of surprise about her, then waved the wicked claws of her right hand dismissively and turned her nose up. âYou know, I sincerely expected you to refuse before even hearing my offer. Color me surprised.â She pivoted on writhing tendrils and crept across the room at a languid half-pace as she responded, never once prying her eyes from the gunner. âI should hope thatâs the last shock you give me.â

Beckett tensed. Maybe it wouldâve been better if she had shown no interest at all. It especially didnât help that Xenobia had barely moved her gaze away from her during this entire encounter.Â
âIâm not in it for the glory. Never was, never will be. Not really in it for the gold either. Not this time, at least. I consider it to be more of aâŠwell, a bonus.â She paused. âIâm only here because of a job.â
Oh. ThatâŠactually wasnât that bad of a price. While she still didnât trust it, Beckett decided to go along with the witchâs wants. Besides, she didnât really want Xenobia against her. At least, in the present moment. âI donât know why you care, butâŠa tavern-keep in the Reef sent me. Name was YetuâŠI think. Anyways, he told me to come here and retrieve this one specific artifact in exchange for some information that I want. Dunno why he cares for it, though. It ainât my business, so I didnât ask.â
The rocketeer was unsure as to whether or not she was going to regret this.

The witch stopped suddenly some two yards away from Beckett, then turned back to her and crept closer to her again. She unwound the string of pearls from her wrist and plucked it between her wicked nails by a single bead. âA price of the abstract sort,â she repeated, and she slowly extended the jewelry toward the adventurer. âThat is my lone, simple demand in exchange for...what are you looking for? Guttersnipes like you seek gold and glory, donât you?â
Xenobia kept the pearls grasped between her fingers extended, and her free arm folded stiffly behind her back. âIâm sure I know where your treasure is, girl, and Iâm certain I can help you get your hands on it, but Iâll only do that if you tell me who sent you, and why.â

There were few jobs that Beckett didnât like, but having to rummage through an old Devaedric castle in the middle of the night definitely was far from ideal. It wasnât the architecture that made her uneasy, though. No, it was the thought that someone could be checking up on the place or worse, coming to get the artifact she was paid to retrieve. Her contractor did say that it was pretty important, after all.Â
Worst case scenario: someone from House Devaedra shows up, also seeking the artifact, and they recognize her.
Beckett clicked her tongue, having found nothing of interest on one of the desks. As much as she hated being here, the rocketeer figured that she might as well see if there was anything else worth taking home. After all, her contractor is only paying her in information. Useful information, yes, but information nonetheless.Â
Moving to the other half of the room, she started rummaging through an old dresser. So far, all she could find were musty-smelling papers and jewelry that could still have some value. With that in mind, she stuffed the necklaces and rings she found into her bag. Maybe sheâll have better luck in the next room.
Itâs certainly a long way down.
Dignified, from her perch upon the castle precipice, Xenobia watched the dusty pillars of the fallen castle plunge deep from where they shouldered its great marble roofs. A great darkness blanketed the vine-wrought paths of the shrouded ruins; these grounds were once a place of sanctuary for Devaedraâs best and brightest, idyllic in its own twisted way, but the tides of war flooded the cobbled paths in a thousand shades of red and washed away those with softer grips.
No skin off the shadow witchâs back, of course - people who fall in the face of conflict, she thought, could not even hope to wield the kind of power needed to siphon power from it. She turned her watchful gaze away from the ruins and slithered down the coiling stairwell leading off the narrow rampart.
One might find a telling stain if she knew where to look.
Incidentally, Xenobia was more than familiar with the desecrated fortress. Such is how she knew the winding paths through the upper reaches of the sanctuary, and such is how she wove with so little effort through its winding halls, and with hardly a whisper of a sound. No floorboards creaked, and no tiles split between the lashing of her tendrils; she moved with the same deliberate purpose and care that carried her to glory under the harsh tutelage of her mentor, and only the appearance of the adventurer stirred her from her mission.
There are always complications.
Xenobia heard Beckett long before she saw her, and as she crept along the wall leading to the room the skybraver was rifling through, the fluidity of her movements turned to languor. She peeked around the frame of the door and held a breath, but something within her seemed to shake her free of her reservations. She was a shadow witch, after all - the shadow witch! Nobody could keep her from her prize, surely, least of all the adventurerâŠright?
With no further reservations, Xenobia slipped through the door and closed in a few feet toward Beckett, her spindly arms outstretched. Her tentacles twisted and slapped against the ground as she moved. Finally, without a breath, she pulled her lips back into a tight sneer and spoke.
âNow, now - certainly you were taught to knock before setting foot on an estate you could never hope to own yourself.â
Upon hearing the voice, Beckett dropped what she was holding and turned around immediately. Of course someone had to be here. Oh, even better, it was that tentacle witch, Xenobia. Great, just perfect.
âI wasnât expecting anyone else to be here,â she commented, one hand ready to pull out a pistol. The witch was practically looming over her, but her sides were left wide open. If fighting didnât work out, Beckett could always try and escape from there. âLast I checked, this place was abandoned.â
Xenobia minded Beckettâs words carefully as she moved, then turned her eyes to survey the room and stopped on a dime. Her spindly arms folded across her chest, and her mouth opened a bit, and for a moment she looked like she was about to let loose some scathing remark. Suddenly, though, she turned on the coiling stalks of shadow that carried her, gaze still trained on the adventurer, and slunk silently toward one of the vanities left ajar.
âThis place was abandoned, and now it isnât - donât you act so surprised. A castle left unmanned is a treasure trove for the fearless...and a trap for the foolish.â She reached down into the drawers and began sifting stiffly through its contents, then, in a pleasant tone that betrayed her scathing expression, continued, âYouâre looking for something, arenât you? Both you and I are in pursuit of something, I think, but I canât quite get a bead on your heartâs desire.â
The witch raised a thread of pearls out of the vanity drawer, then coiled them around her narrow wrist. She turned to Beckett, eyes gleaming in some awful, scrutinous way, and asked, âWhat is it that youâre here for? Weâre two birds of a feather in this dreadful place, so perhaps I can help you - for a price, of course, of the abstract sort.â
