Portrait of a Man in a Red Cap + Reverse Side German, possibly Ulm, 1480

In this double-sided portrait, a man holds a carnation, dressed in his red cap and luxurious fur-lined robe. On the back, a lively cadaver stands above an open grave. During the early Renaissance, such portraits were personal, portable objects to be brought out for family or friends. The backs were often painted with a forceful reminder of mortality. The banner in the painting reads, in Latin, “Thither we all make our way; this is our final home.”

Across from the the crustacean tank was a small octopus tank. This little fucker squeezed out of a tiny hole at the top of his tank, walk across the hall, and get into the crustacean tank. He would then hunt and eat. After he was done, he crawled back out and get back in his tank
