M*: How did you first get interested in becoming an esthetician?

SR: I first got interested in becoming an esthetician when I walked into a Macy’s and noticed a brow bar to the right. I decided to get my brows done and I loved how different it made me look. My face had a different shape to it. It appeared more sculpted! I was with my friend that got hers done too. We looked so cool! It made us feel good! I liked that. After a lot of thought I googled beauty school and decided that’s what I want to do!

M*: Where did you study for your license?

SR: I studied at Marinello School of Beauty

M*: Did you like the school? Would you suggest it to others?

SR: It was a very good school it all just depends on the teacher and how they go about teaching. The school is just there to provide a roof top over the teachers head.

M*: Yes! I definitely agree. Learning begins with teaching! What has been the most fun for you throughout your studies or practice?

SR: The most fun has got to be waxing people’s brows.

M*: Haha same thing that got you into it huh?

SR: Haha yes! It’s what got me into it, I’m still hooked on it, love the beauty of it, the enhancement of ones face from it!

M*: Where do you work now?

SR: Pure Elegance Day Spa in Long Beach California

M*: What are some of the beauty services you offer besides waxing brows?

Body treatments, such as scrubs. You wanna look good at the beach, it’s summer and what better way to go than with glowing skin. I also do facials that can give you that glow. Waxing, and I want to start doing eyelash extensions. That’s pretty much it for now. I’m just getting started.

M*: Do you ever plan to expand further than that?

SR: Definitely! I would love to get into the medical field but I would also love to have my own day spa and get my brows done whenever! haha! I mean as a career I want to get into the medical field because that’s where it’s all at! If I want to be making money and study as a career I would do that but as my hobby and like just my personal life style I would like my day Spa. Relax and chill there ya know?

M*: Haha Yep! Make that money to help your dreams come true! 

SR: Exactly!

M*: What’s the oddest thing a customer has asked for?

SR:Oh my gosh.. I mean not to get so private but.. Waxing has it’s ups and downs. It varies between men and women. Sometimes people find you attractive .. and...yo know, I’m not going to get into that hahahahahaha

M*: HAHAHAHA I understand. Moving on, what safety precautions do you suggest to avoid sun burns this summer?

SR: Re-apply spf every 2 hours and wear a hat! Especially if you spend a lot of time out! If you think one coat of sun protection will do the job think again! The sun is a hot muthafucka haha. PROTECT YOUR SKIN! hahaha

M*: Hahaha Yes! Double protect your skin this summer!

What are some of the most common skin types that you work with?

SR: I typically deal with dry skin since we’re in southern California where it’s always hot! I do a lot of deep hydration facials. I also treat oily and acne prone skin but I suggest seeing a dermatologist if your acne is severe and doesn’t get better with my services. It could be an internal problem.

M*: Now let’s talk about a couple DO’s and DON’Ts! Last time that we talked I had a face mask that included plain yogurt, lemon, and honey. This is a popular “homemade remedy” circling the Internet. Can you tell me again why that was such a bad idea?

SR: It’s the lemon! It’s way too acidic for the face. They use lemon as a lightener, the yogurt works as a disinfectant and honey helps as well but it’s the lemon that really drys out the skin and can damage it severely without protection. Do NOT use freshly squeezed lemon on your face! haha Talk to a professional!

M*: With that said we can conclude DON’T believe everything you read out there and DO see a professional such as Stefanie to find out your skin type and better yourself inside and out for a healthy, fun, and clear summer. Your skin deserves it! Do you have any advise for anyone trying to make it as an esthetician?

Some advise? Never give up! It’s a very competitive field but don't give up. Just because your not where you want to be right now you will get there if you keep working hard and doing you! No matter how many times you fail, keep going. It’s all about being persistent, working hard, and not giving up. You start something because you love it, it doesn’t just fade away. You kinda give up on yourself and start thinking “I don’t want to do this anymore because I’m not good at it” but that’s the last thing you wanna do. Don’t discourage yourself. Don’t give up!

M*: Final thoughts on beauty and tips?

SR: If you want to have good looking make up, get a facial first! ;) You’d be surprised what a difference it makes!
