"get up." a light nudge followed by a kick to their abdomen. "get up."
whumpee shakes their head. curls up tighter into themself. what's the point, if all that awaits them is more endless agony anyways?
a low cry of despair slips past their lips as whumper grabs their hair and pulls them up. "I said," two heavy slaps followed by a warning squeeze to the back of their throat. "get the fuck up."
whumpee trembles, trembles, trembles. tasting blood, feeling it dribble past their chin. it won't stop. what's the point?

CHLOROFORM WHUMP PROMPTS
It's just so... delightfully dramatic >:)
These can also double as kidnapping/capture whump prompts.

HERO X VILLAIN
Villain genuinely likes Heroâthat's the whole problemâwhich is why they choose the cloth over the knife they're supposed to use tonight. "Consider this a professional courtesy," they murmur, lowering Hero to the ground far more carefully than the job requires.
Hero reaches the edge of the building with nowhere left to run. Villain stops several steps away instead of rushing them. "Jump if you want," they say evenly. "Either way, you're coming with me."
Villain doesn't have time for a fight tonightâthe reactor's already counting downâso they don't even bother monologuing before the cloth goes over Hero's face. "Nothing personal," they mutter, dragging Hero's dead weight behind a support beam. "I just need the city empty for six more minutes."
Villain lets Hero get one hand on their mask before the cloth does its work, and the mask stays half-peeled, revealing just enough to make Hero's last conscious thought a furious, useless I knew it.
Instead of mocking Hero, Villain catches them before they hit the ground. "I'd love to monologue," they sigh, "but we're already behind schedule."
Hero hears Civilianâs scream from the next room just as the cloth slams over their face. They spend every last ounce of strength trying to get back to it. "You're very good at your job," Villain admits. "That's why I had to remove you first."
Hero watches their team getting closer on the tracker clipped to Villain's belt. Villain notices where they're looking and grins. "They're only... forty-seven seconds too late."
Reinforcements appear at the end of the corridor just as Villain starts backing away with Hero. Villain casually waves with their free hand. "We'll return your hero eventually."
BOUNTY HUNTER
"Alive," Whumper reminds themself under their breath as Whumpee lands another elbow to their ribs. "The poster said alive."
Whumper has to switch arms halfway through because Whumpee is putting up far more of a fight than expected. "Seriously?" they mutter, readjusting their grip. "Do you ever make anything easy?"
"You're worth a ridiculous amount of money," Whumper says, tightening their grip when Whumpee starts struggling again. "I'd appreciate it if you stopped trying to lower my hourly rate."
Whumpee slams a boot down onto Whumper's foot. Whumper winces, adjusts their grip, and deadpans, "Adding 'steel-toed boots' to next year's budget."
"I'd apologise," Whumper says as they wrestle Whumpee's wrists behind their back, "but this is literally my dream job."
Whumpee finally goes limp. Whumper waits another few seconds anyway, then sighs. "You faked it better than the last guy."
Whumper glances between the increasingly tattered wanted poster and the now-unconscious Whumpee. "...They forgot to mention what a pain in the ass you are."
SPY
Whumper waits until Whumpee has finished checking the room for bugs, hidden cameras, and exits before stepping out from behind the curtains. "Done?"
Whumpee recognises the hold immediately. They taught recruits how to break out of it. It doesn't work nearly as well from the other side.
Every escape technique Whumpee knows requires leverage. Pinned against a wall with someone stronger than them, they're useless.
Whumpee catches Whumper's wrist with both hands and forces it inch by inch away from their face. Every muscle shakes with effort. Then one hand slips.
They reach for the hidden knife sewn into their sleeveâor the concealed pistol at their hipâbut their arm suddenly feels too heavy to lift. By the time their numb fingers finally brush the weapon, they refuse to close around it.
"Go on," Whumper murmurs. "Profile me." They keep the cloth firmly in place while Whumpee's increasingly unfocused eyes desperately search their face for anything useful to remember.
Whumpee manages to tear the cloth away for one glorious second before Whumper simply catches their jaw and puts it right back. "That was your chance."
Whumper pats them down after they've gone limp, pausing when they find three hidden weapons. "See? This is why I brought the cloth."
DETECTIVE
The detective recognises the smell instantly. Their own notes said victims usually lost consciousness within minutes. Minutes. They've never hated being right more.
"You know," Whumper muses, tightening their grip just enough to stop another desperate attempt to pull away, "it's refreshing not having to explain what's happening." The detective's horrified expression says they already know.
The detective has spent years chasing a criminal who always seemed to know what the police knew. As Whumper casually quotes entire paragraphs from the detective's private notes, the horrifying answer finally clicks into place.
Whumper raises an eyebrow as the detective abruptly stops struggling and instead starts trying to hold their breath. "Ah," they smile. "So you have read the toxicology reports."
The detective slams Whumper backwards into a filing cabinet. Drawers burst open, papers exploding across the room. They wrench the wrist holding the cloth away for one glorious secondâjust long enough for a desperate gasp before Whumper drives them into the desk and the cloth is there again.
"Come on," Whumper taunts between strained breaths. "You were putting up a much better fight thirty seconds ago."
ROYAL WHUMPEE
Whumpee's crown crashes to the marble floor between them. It rolls away, forgotten in the struggle.
Whumpee tears at Whumper's wrist with both hands, twisting until the grip falters. The cloth slips away for half a second. They suck in one desperate breath before Whumper yanks them back against their chest.
"Careful," Whumper laughs as Whumpee nearly headbutts them. "I need you conscious long enough to fetch a ransom."
The orchestra never stops playing. Guests laugh, dance, and twirl beneath glittering chandeliers while Whumpee struggles behind a velvet curtain, hidden only a few metres away, desperately trying to turn their face away from the sickly sweetness of the cloth pressed over it. "Listen," Whumper whispers, breath tickling Whumpee's ear. The music swells. "They don't even know you're gone."
"Do you know how many kingdoms would go to war over you?" Whumper murmurs, tightening their grip. "Let's see how much they really love their heir."
UNDERCOVER/TRAITOR
The meeting room is empty except for their teammate. Whumpee stops in the doorway, their stomach dropping as they meet their gaze. The smile they get in return is all the confirmation they need. Before they can shout, their teammate crosses the distance and clamps a hand over their mouth.
"You figured it out," Whumper murmurs, tightening their grip. "Unfortunately... so did I."
The last thing Whumpee sees before everything blurs is Whumper calmly straightening their uniform and walking back toward the others... alone.

Tw character death (implied/fade to black)/ blood and blood loss/ loopy from blood loss/ blood under cut lol
âYa know⌠I never really thought about how nice of a color blood is. Heh.â Whumpee let out a single breathless laugh like theyâd just run a few miles.
Caretaker turned to see what Whumpee was going on about this time.
âYouâre late again, Whumpee. And what the hell are youââ Their heart stopped and they froze as they took in the scene in front of them.
Whumpee was there, leaning unsteadily against the wall like gravity was fighting them to stay upright.
Whumpee looked up at Caretaker with a smile. Dazed, eyes and a dopey expression on their face. Clearly a bit out of their mind.
âT-too bad its hurts sso muuch t-to ssee it,â Whumpee slurred.
They stared down at their hand covered in blood with a look of awe. Like the red covering their hands and that stained their shirt and most of their skin was the most beautiful thing theyâd ever seen.
âIâsss so prettyâŚâ Whumpeeâs smile was gruesome with that same, beautiful red color before it fell with a grimace. Their hand came back down to hold their stomach. Right where the worst of the blood was seeping into their ripped and ragged shirt, pooling in the waistband of their pants, dripping to the floor. âF-f-fuckinâ hell⌠heh,â they laughed again. Even more breathless. Blood splattered from their lips with each huff of half-aborted, painful sounding breaths. âPretty⌠but f-f-fuckinâ h-hurts.â
Whumpeeâs eyes lazily followed the blood as it pooled around their hand again, sliding in rivulets over their knuckles and dropping onto the floor with horrific splashes. They stared at the pool that was growing beneath them.
âA-always said b-beauty is p-pain.â Whumpeeâs loopy laugh at their own joke turned harshly into pained, gurgling, wet coughs before Caretaker finally felt their thoughts kick back into gear.
âWhumpee!!â
Caretaker sprinted forward as Whumpee fell to their knees with a painful thud. Their head lulled forward and their arms drooped. Caretaker saw their body jerk with one last effort to stay upright before they crumbled just before Caretaker could reach them.
âFuck- FUCK! Whumpee NO!â Caretaker slid beside Whumpee, pulling them to lay on their back with their head in Caretakerâs lap.
One look at the gaping wound through the tattered clothes and Caretaker knew this was bad.
Very bad. And yet they couldnât remember a single piece of emergency information about what to do in this situation.
A vague thought about how Whumpee could have possibly made it this far like this echoed in their mind along with every other panicked thought running through them at the speed of light.
Whumpee looked up at them with unfocused eyes and recognition crossed their face after a moment.
âH-hi C-caret-t-taker,â they stuttered then gasped in a breath like the effort to speak was already too much. Whumpeeâs eyes crinkled and gleamed with their smile up at Caretaker, like they werenât in excruciating pain and on the brink of bleeding out. âS-sorry âm l-late,â they whispered.
âShhhh, Whumpee,â Caretaker hushed them, brushing a bloodied piece of hair that had been matted to their skin off Whumpeeâs face. Whumpee blinked slowly like they were enjoying the gentle caress despite the blood covering them.
Caretaker looked back down at Whumpeeâs stomach and had to hold down the bile that was threatening to come up.
âWhat⌠what happened?â Caretaker could barely choke out.
âN-never thought I had something so b-b-beau-beaut-iful in m-me, huh, C-caretaker?â Whumpee laugh-coughed again as if they hadnât heard Caretakerâs question. Their whole body shuddered with the coughs. Their eyes closed again in a blink so slow that Caretaker wasnât sure they would open again.
âDonât fall asleep Whumpee,â they tapped the others cheek lightly to get them to look up at them again. Caretakerâs brain finally caught up amongst their panic. They reached for their phone and dialed the emergency number. âIâm.. Iâm calling the ambulance. But you gotta stay with me.â Whumpeeâs eyes blinked closed again. âNo no, come on! Stay with me!â
Whumpeeâs eyes popped open, but was still unfocused and searching.
âY-youâre very pretty t-too, Caret-taker,â Whumpee smiled a lazy smile but their eyes were barely open anymore.
Whumpee reached up with a shaking, trembling hand and lightly touched Caretakerâs face. Whumpee seemed to smile at the red marks their hands left behind in Caretakerâs skin. They left another streak of it like some kind of horrible finger-painting.
âHeh. Pretty,â they huffed with strained effort in their tone.
Caretaker could feel how cold their trembling touch was and the cool air licking against the gore Whumpeeâs hands left in a perfectly shared, gruesome hand print made them shiver.
âHello? Hello? Is anyone there?â Caretaker vaguely heard the emergency line operator on the phone still in their hand. Once again, they were kicked back to the present, bringing the phone back up to their earâ the side opposite the one Whumpee was holding and admiring.
âH-hello? Yes! Iâm here! I-I need an ambulance at.. um 845 West Maââ Suddenly their arm was being tugged away by the same hand that had been holding their cheek. They lost grip on the phone and it clattered to the floor. Whumpee didnât let go of their arm when Caretaker went to reach for it again.
âWhumper came back for me. I-I escapedâŚâ Whumpee breathed so quietly that Caretaker could barely hear them but it was clear they were determined to say this. âW-wanted t-to see you⌠o-one last t-time.â
âN-no! Whumpee, the phone! Theyâre coming! Theyâll help you!â
âW-wanted to th-thank you f-for e-e-very-th-thing.â
âYou can thank me later, Whumpee!â Caretaker pulled from their grasp and took the phone again as Whumpeeâs hand fell limply back down.
Whumpee let out a shuddering breath like that small effort to reach out to Caretaker was more than they could handle. Perhaps it was. Caretaker took their coldâtoo coldâ hand back into their own, missing Whumpeeâs touch immediately. Whumpee smiled up at Caretaker with a gentle, though bloodied, grin and squeezed feebly around Caretakers hand.
Almost like Whumpee was comforting Caretaker.
âAmbulance! 845 West Main Street! Hurry! Please!â
âCan you tell me whatâs going on? What the injuries are?â
âBlood!â Caretaker spit out immediately, half focused on the way Whumpeeâs smile was drooping and their eyes blinked closed slower and slower. âU-uhm! Bigâ uh? Holeâwound! in their stomach. Just.. just above their navel?â Caretaker tried to explain, horror rushing through them as Whumpeeâs grip slowly began to loosen in theirs.
âCan you put pressure on the wound to help stop the bleeding?â The operator asked.
Caretaker nodded as if she could see them. âU-um. Yes. Pressure! The bleeding!â Caretaker recalled that old bit of emergency knowledge the moment the operator had said it and cursed themself for forgetting it the moment they needed it.
Caretaker moved to do just that but Whumpeeâs hand tightened again. Caretaker looked down at them, surprised by their sudden energy, only to see their eyes wide and fearful and overflowing with tears.
âD-d-donât le-let go of m-me. P-please!â
âWhumpee, I have to put pressure onââ
âN-not g-gonna w-w-work. Pl-please d-donât l-let me go. P-please donât l-leave me. I-I donât want t-to be a-alone. D-Donât let go!â
âB-but Whumpeeââ
âPlease..â
âHello? Can you hear me? Hello? Are you putting pressure on the wound? If you can hear me, emergency vehicles are on the way to your location. Seven minutes out.â
âItâs too late.â Whumpee whispered. âP-please donât let go of me.â
âO-okay, Whumpee. O-okay. Iâm here. I-Iâm not going anywhere.â
Caretaker squeezed Whumpeeâs hand again and Whumpee let out a relieved, choked sob.
âI-I-Iâm sorry.â
âShh. Its okay. Itâs going to be okay.â
âI love y-you.â
âI love you too, Whumpee.â

*~*~*~*
Villain knew Hero was waiting up for them before they even opened the apartment door. Golden light spilled beneath it, and the television murmured softly on the other side.
They closed their eyes briefly before unlocking it and stepping inside. The warmth of the apartment hit first. Then Heroâs eyes.
They were curled into the couch in sleep clothes, one sock missing, book abandoned face-down beside them. Their expression sharpened immediately when they saw Villain.
There it is, Villain thought tiredly. The worrying.
They loved Hero for it.Â
God, they loved them for it.
Which was precisely why they couldnât bear this.
âYouâre late,â Hero said softly.
Villain slipped off their gloves one finger at a time to hide the slight tremor in their hands. âWork.â
Their voice sounded normal. Calm. Dryly amused.
Good.
The hallway swayed slightly when they started walking.
Less good.
Villain compensated automatically, smoothing their gait before Hero could comment on it. Years of practice made the adjustment effortless despite the nausea clawing behind their eyes.
Shower.Â
They just needed the shower. Wash off the blood, the hands, the smell.
Then they could come back out and smile properly and let Hero fuss over a fake headache or a pulled muscle and everything would be fine.
âYouâre bleeding,â Hero said.
Villain touched absentmindedly at the side of their neck. Their fingertips came away red.
Annoying.
âComes with the job.â
Hero didnât laugh.
Villain could feel their gaze following every movement as they loosened their cuffs and headed for the hallway.
Donât ask questions, Hero. Please.
âIâm going to shower,â Villain said lightly. âThen you can scold me for my work-life balance.â
Behind them, silence.
Thenâ
âTurn around.â
Villain stopped.Â
Their eyes slid shut for half a second.
Damn it.
Hero almost never used that tone.Â
It slipped under Villainâs ribs and curled around their spine until disobedience felt impossible.
Villain stood there for a moment arguing with themself.
They could ignore it.Â
Technically.
They could laugh and keep walking and lock the bathroom door behind them.
Hero wouldnât force them, would never force them. But then they would get that look in their eyes tomorrow morning. Hurt hidden behind understanding. Quiet acceptance masking their worry.
Villain hated that look. Hated being the cause of it even more. It was ridiculous, honestly. They faced armed mercenaries without blinking. Lied to governments. Walked into torture chambers with their pulse steady.
But Hero saying âturn aroundâ in that soft voice?Â
Devastating.
Villain almost smiled despite themself.Â
Idiot.Â
Completely gone for them.
They hid the expression before turning around carefully.
Too late.
Heroâs mouth twitched.
âYouâre amused?â
âNo.â
Liar.
Hero stood and walked closer.
Villain kept their posture easy despite the pounding in their skull. Their suit was still immaculate. Hair still neat enough. They knew how to hold themself together.
Hero's gaze travelled over them once, calculating.
Too perceptive.Â
Villain resisted the urge to fidget.
âYouâre favouring your left side,â Hero said quietly.
âA bruise.â
âYou took your gloves off before your coat.â
Villain blinked once.
âThe blood on your collar bothered you more than the blood on your hands,â Hero continued softly. âWhich means you knew it was there already.â
Clever thing.
Villain kept their expression smooth. âYou always did overanalyse me.â
Hero ignored that entirely. Their gaze lifted to Villainâs face instead.
âAnd you have a concussion.â
Villain sighed softly through their nose. âMild.â
âOne pupilâs blown.â
ââŚModerate concussion.â
Hero stepped closer. Villain held perfectly still.
âYou should sit down,â Hero murmured.
âIâd rather shower first.â
âWhy?â
Villain smiled faintly. âBecause Iâm covered in blood?â
âNo.â Hero tilted their head slightly. âThatâs not the reason.â
Dangerous.
Dangerous conversation.
Villainâs stomach tightened.
âYouâre very determined tonight.â
âYouâre very evasive tonight.â
Villain looked away briefly, gaze catching on the bathroom door. So close.
Hero followed the glance immediately.
Ah.
Villain suppressed a grimace.
Hero softened then, all sharp intelligence melting into something unbearably fond.
âOkay,â they said quietly. âOne thing first.â
Villain eyed them warily. âHm?â
âJust one hug.â
Absolutely not.
The answer flashed through Villain instantly.Â
It was too risky. Far too close.Â
Hero would feel the shaking. The bruises. The way Villain flinched at pressure in the wrong places.
WorseâVillain wanted it.
God, they wanted it.
They were exhausted down to the marrow. Their head rang. Their skin still crawled from unwanted hands and cruel laughter and being held downâ
No.
No.
Shower first.
Control themself first.
Hero watched the war play across their face and softened further.
âI donât care that youâre dirty,â they said gently. âThen you can shower and Iâll stop bothering you.â
Villain almost laughed at that. As if Hero had ever stopped bothering them. As if Villain had ever truly wanted them to.
Their chest ached suddenly with helpless affection.
Hopeless.
They were absolutely hopeless for this person.
ââŚOne hug,â Villain muttered.
Hero smiled immediately.
It hit Villain right in the ribs.
Idiot, they thought again, exasperated and terribly fond.
Slowly, reluctantly, Villain spread their arms slightly in invitation.
Hero stepped into them at once.
One arm slid around Villainâs waist. The other curled around the back of their neck.
Villain stiffened immediately.
Wrong.
Hero didnât usually hug like this.
Their pulse stumbled. âSweetheartââ
Too late.
Heroâs fingers had already disappeared into their hair, searching and careful.
Then suddenly not careful at all as fingertips brushed the sticky blood matted at the back of Villainâs head.
Villain hissed sharply.
Hero went still for exactly one second.
Then their hand at Villainâs waist tightened.
Not affection anymore.Â
âŚAssessment.
They tried to pull back immediately, but Hero's other hand slid lower first, fingertips grazing beneath the hem of their shirt.
Pain flared white-hot across Villain's hips. They jerked violently.
Hero froze.
Beneath the lifted fabric, dark purple fingerprints bloomed across Villain's skin, stark even in the dim hallway light.
Villain's stomach dropped clean through the floor.
No.Â
No no noâ
Hero stared.
Then their gaze snagged on another bruise, lower this time.
Teeth.
Villain felt Hero go utterly motionless against them.Â
Too late. They knew.
Villain shoved them back hard enough that Hero stumbled.
âDonât.âÂ
Their voice cracked violently.Â
Hero stared.
Their hand lifted instinctively, then stopped halfway when Villain flinched.
Villain dragged their shirt back down with hands that refused to cooperate. One side caught on their belt. They yanked harder than necessary.
"Well," they muttered, forcing an exhausted smile. "That was invasive."
The silence stretched.
Hero didn't answer. The colour had drained from their face.
Villain's smile faltered. "...I'm fine."
Hero's eyes flicked to the blood still drying in Villain's hair.
"...Mostly," Villain conceded.
Hero swallowed once.
"Who?" they asked quietly.
Villain blinked. "What?"
"Who did this to you?"
Villain looked almost offended. "That's an incredibly broad question. You see, it could be the concussion. Could be the broken ribs. Could beâ"
Villain caught themself too late.
"...Actually, no, let's not make a list. It'll ruin the night."
Another silence stretched between them.
When Villain spoke again, the humour was thinner now. Held together by habit.
"It wasn't..."
Their jaw locked.
The next word refused to come.
For a long moment they simply stood there, staring somewhere over Hero's shoulder, as though waiting might make the sentence finish itself.
"...Consensual."
They laughed quietly.
"I've discovered it's a remarkably unpleasant thing to say out loud."
Hero's gaze never left their face.Â
Their hand curled slowly into a fist.
"I assure you," Villain murmured, eyes fixed stubbornly on the floor between them, "it was not a lapse in judgement. I wasn'tâ" Their throat worked. "With them. By choice." Villain shut their eyes. "I fought."Â
A breath.Â
"I lost."
Their laugh broke halfway out.
"Embarrassing, really.â
They squeezed their eyes shut.Â
â...I didn't choose it."Â
Their hands started shaking. "I tried toâto make them stop.â
"Villain."
"I would neverâ"
Their voice disappeared.Â
They tried again.Â
"I would never do that to you."
A flicker crossed Heroâs face.
Rage.Â
Cold, silent, catastrophic rage.
Their jaw tightened so hard a muscle jumped beneath the skin.
â...Didnât catch it the first time, love. My mistake.â Hero took one slow step forward. âWho?â
Villain took a step backward.
Hero took one forward.Â
Villain hated the tremor in their own hands. Hated the tears burning suddenly behind their eyes even more.
âItâs handled,â they said tightly.
Hero looked at them like theyâd said something insane.
Villainâs head throbbed harder. The apartment tilted unpleasantly.
âI said itâs handled.â
Heroâs voice came very quiet. "You weren't hiding the blood."
"âThatâs enough."
Villain turned away.
"..."
"Villain."
They stopped.
This time, they didnât even try to turn around.

When heartbreak/grief affects a character's magic
Magic backfiring often having the same effects as a gun backfiring
When the stress and trauma is genuinely killing the character
The variance of scars caused by magic. Necrotic scars from dark magic. Colorful scars from haphazard spellcasting. Lighting scars that refuse to fade. Leathery skin from overuse of fire magic. Discolored fingertips, foggy eyes, rapidly graying hair, gimme gimme gimme
Nose bleeds from overuse? A class. But what about... tinnitus, blurred vision, dizzying, loss of appetite, weight loss, tingling/numbness, loss of balance, paling skin, weakened immune systems, muscular pain, oh I could go on
Soldiers collapsing mid battle from using their magic too much
Squad mates holding up their comrade so that they can keep casting magic, despite their weakness and inability to stand for themselves

The difference was stark and jarring. Caretaker had seen Whumpee in their days of service, the unstoppable killing machine that would stop at nothing to carry out orders â and they saw Whumpee now, frail and sickly, bedridden most days. It was unbelievable.
"Whumpee?" they called quietly, in case Whumpee was once again asleep in the middle of the day.
"Come in," came their raspy voice from inside the bedroom. Caretaker slowly pushed the door open and went inside, tray in hand.
"I brought you lunch," they said gently. "Do you think you can eat?"
"I'm not very hungry."
"You lost so much weight, you need to eat." Their body, once an instrument of profound suffering, was now fragile. It looked like a strong gust of wind could blow them over. "I'll help. It's just soup anyway, it'll go down easily."
Whumpee slowly and carefully sat up in bed and let Caretaker place the tray in their lap. They winced as they tried to grab the spoon, and Caretaker was immediately there to help, taking the spoon and lifting a spoonful of soup to Whumpee's mouth, which they dutifully swallowed. "Your hand hurts?" Caretaker asked between two bites.
"It's been hurting a lot lately," they said. They didn't say they didn't know why, and Caretaker could only imagine it was because of something during their training, or an old injury. They didn't ask.
"How is your hip? You complained about that yesterday."
"Sorry for complaining."
"No, that's notâ I understand you're in a lot of pain. I just want to know what pain, exactly."
Whumpee was quiet for a while, wordlessly forcing down spoonful after spoonful. Before the bowl was empty, they spoke again. "I don't think my hip will get any better."
"We can talk to the doctor again."
"I don't think there's anything they can do."
Caretaker fell silent. Just what had their body been pushed through? What training? What missions? Whumpee was quite literally falling apart now that they'd been rescued, both physically and mentally. What had their handler done to them?
"Whumpee," they started slowly. "The doctor can help, if you let them. You just need to tell them what happened."
Whumpee didn't talk. It wasn't surprising. They never talked. It was a miracle they disclosed they had hip pain, they weren't going to tell Caretaker what caused it. In a way, they didn't need to; it was most likely overexertion. But it would've been much better if Whumpee told them flat out.
"I understand you've been living in secrecy for ages," they went on. "I understand this new situation is difficult for you. But please, I need you toâ"
"I'm tired," they cut in. "I would like to rest."
"After lunch is time for your daily walk. The doctor said you'd deteriorate if we didn't stick to it. You're already so frailâŚ"
Without arguing, Whumpee simply lay back down. They knew Caretaker wasn't the type to fight them on it, and they were right. Caretaker just sighed and grabbed the tray again.
"I'll at least open the window so you'll get some fresh air."
"The cold aggravates the muscle pain," Whumpee muttered. "Please don't."
Caretaker sighed again. "WhumpeeâŚ"
"I'm going to sleep now."
It was impossible to imagine that this person had once been a living weapon. Caretaker relented, leaving the window closed and and leaving the room, closing the door behind themself. They felt like they should've been more stern, but stern just wasn't in their DNA. They pitied Whumpee.
They brought the empty bowl to the sink and began to wash it. A new, unbearable thought weaselled its way into their mind. What if Whumpee was manipulating them? But no, that couldn't be. Their downward spiral was readily apparent to everyone, including Caretaker. And they hadn't ruined all those lives by lying. They were a soldier, not a lawyer.
Once done, they sat down at the kitchen table, burying their face in their hands. Were they even doing the right thing by caring for a murderer? No, of course they were. Whumpee was just an instrument. They never wanted to kill. Right? Even if they had⌠they were different now.
when a living weapon whumpee only takes orders from ONE person. Theyâve been conditioned to ignore everyone elseâs orders. This means that after rescue, the team can barely get whumpee to drink or allow them bandage their injuries. One of the teammates manages to imitate whumpeeâs handler by deepening their voice.
They stay out of whumpeeâs line of sight, standing behind their hospital bed. âDrink this,â they snap, hating how they have to command this broad-shouldered ghost of a person. Without their armor, without their mask, whumpee looks like a wraith. Thereâs nothing behind their eyes. They play with the hospital blanket with twitching hands that have strangled and maimed.
When whumpee hears the order they stiffen to attention and take the cup offered with those still-shaking hands. But the cup slips through their fingers and lands in a puddle on the tiles.
They immediately tense up, shoulder blades flung so far back they touch. Their breathing quickens, waiting.
But nothing happens.
They give whumpee a new glass of cold water. This time, they lift the cup to whumpeeâs lips and hold it steady, with one hand behind their head for support.
living weapon lie in bloodstained dirt. theyâd been on the front line for days, but now the line advances without them. they did their job.Â
their mind drifts in and out of tangibility. thereâs a dull pain in their side that they elect to ignore. they shouldnât react to pain. handler would be disappointed, especially after all that conditioning.Â
living weapon focuses on a figure coming into their line of sight. the figure crouches down. handler. handler looks⌠conflicted, almost. handler is always so self-assuredâŚ
living weapon should stand. they begin to gather their strength to do so when handler places a hand on their chest. handlerâs hand is trembling.
âhey,â handler says. handlerâs voice is directed to living weapon, but handlerâs focus is torn between them and the moved battlefield. âstatus?â
âdowned,â living weapon answers automatically. their voice is more strained than they expected it to be. âhit sustained to the chest.â
handler gives living weapon a glance-over to confirm that. handler has no reason to ask what can be so easily observed.Â
âyeah,â handler mutters. living weapon watches handler stand up again, and they find themself unable to clearly see their handlerâs face.Â
silence stretches, bar for the sounds of battle some half-kilometer away. handler gazes down at living weapon, who stares right back.Â
handler should walk away. that much is obvious. handler is needed elsewhere, somewhere that isnât watching living weapon bleed out in the dirt. handler doesnât know enough first aid for this. handler couldnât convince the medics to save living weapon.Â
handler certainly doesnât know how to make death more comfortable. not when living weapon only seems confused.Â
âdid i do good?â
the question comes as handler begins to consider leaving living weapon where they lie. handler returns their attention to living weapon. âwhat?â
âdid i do good today?â living weapon asks again. handler can hear the struggle for breath. their eyes, once so sharp, are glassy.Â
handlerâs mind blanks. handler should not answer that question. at least, handler doesnât want to. but itâs handlerâs job. handler issues praise. handler gives feedback. and handler is not doing well for that job right now.Â
âyes,â handler says. indulging in a little lie here, will that truly hurt? handlerâs never lied to living weapon, but now it feels inconsequential. the blood painting the grass makes it hard to say anything to the contrary. âyou did great, living weapon.â
âAnd itâs really a true killing machine? It doesnât look all that strong.â The man circling the weapon observes.
âI can assure you, all of our weapons are reinforced internally. This way, them being overly bulky wonât blow any sort of cover. A perfect disguise.â The guild handler promises. âBut if you like, Iâd be happy to put on a demonstration. Seeing is believing, and we want our products to speak for us. Not only our reputation.â
The high ceilings of the Guild Hall sends Handlers voice echoing. Itâs a beautiful room. White marble floors, gold columns stretching up to the ceiling, red banners bearing the guild crest draped along the walls. Itâs empty right now, save for the weapon, standing at attention before itâs handler, the prospective buyer, and a few weapons still as statues posted by the doors. Weapon doesnât move as the potential buyer steps back, considering. They donât flinch, donât react at all to the prospect of demonstration. Itâs nothing they havenât been through before.
âYeah, alright. Letâs see what itâs got.â The man agrees.
âExcellent.â Handler snaps his fingers towards the weapons near the door, and they leave the room. Then he turns back to Weapon. âCommand issue.â
Weapon perks up, eyes glued to handler. âReady to receive, sir.â
âWeâre doing a demonstration. A man will be brought out, and handed a few weapons. You are to ensure he doesnât harm me, or yourself, and take him down. Without killing him. You know what, letâs say no harm either, to prove your control. You will not begin until I say so.â
âYes sir.â The moment Weapon agrees, the ones from before return, dragging between them a man who struggles and kicks with all his strength. Itâs no use against weapons, but he does put up a fight. He has a few visible injuries, but not many. Probably to prove to the buyer that the weapon can handle someone in good health. The weapons drop the man, and leave the room, one of them pausing to pass Handler a wicked looking knife.
Weapon watches impassively as Handler places the knife in the prisoner's hand. The prisoner pauses, bewildered, for only a few seconds before his eyes harden and he raises the blade, lunging at Handler.
âBegin.â Handler says simply.
Weapon moves fast, shoudler checking the man so that he loses the path towards Handler. The prisoner stumbles back a bit, but then he bears his teeth and swings his knife at the Weapon, who dodges easily. Weapon drops, and sweeps the man off his feet, careful to catch him before he hits the ground, then dropping him again from height that wonât hurt. It acts before the prisoner can rise, pinning him with one arm, and stepping on the blade so the prisoner canât free the knife. The man thrashes a bit, but itâs useless. Once satisfied he wonât get up. Weapon turns towards the handler, who is smiling.
âVery good.â He turns towards the buyer, âAs you can see, our products are very precise, efficient, and controlled. They donât need to deal any damage to subdue a threat. And if youâre looking for something else, wellâŚâ Handler takes a step back. âCommand issue, take the knife, throw it away, and let him up.â
Weapon does so, chucking the blade halfway across the room, and taking one step back and allowing the prisoner to scramble to his feet.
âWhen I say so,â the handler continues, âkill him. And no blood. I hate when thereâs blood in here.â Handler reaches into his holster and pulls out a gun, tossing it to the prisoner, who fumbles with it for a second, before raising it and training it on Weapon, expression desperate and panicked.
âGo.â Orders Handler, a second before the bang of a gunshot rings out. Weapon dodges the bullet with ease, then the next, closing the distance between him and the prisoner without so much as a graze touching him. The manâs eyes are wide and scared, but he doesnât speak until Weapon is close enough to see its own reflection in the prisoners pupils.
âPle-â Weapon doesnât let him finished, snapping the manâs neck and letting his body fall. The weapon takes a step away, folding its hands behind its back and waiting for Handlers next order.
âThat is impressive.â The buyer admits, almost begrudgingly. Handler grins, and clasps his hands the way he does when closing a deal.
âOur weapons are trained out of all humanity. Its goals will only be your goals, should you choose to purchase. They feel no fear, they will never speak against you, all you need to do is aim it at your enemies, and it will do the rest.â
âAnd the price?â The buyer asks skeptically.
âIt depends on the particular model. This one is a bit higher end, but Iâd be glad to show you some others.â
âLetâs say the price for this one.â
Handlers grin widens. âNothing you canât afford sir, and I assure you, itâs worth it. Come here. Kneel" Handler throws the order over his shoulder. Weapon strides over, stopping just in front of handler and dropping to its knees. Handler grabs its face and turns it towards the buyer.
âNote the features? The lack of scars or distinguishing outward traits? This one blends in flawlessly, perfect for covert missions. And as youâve already seen, itâs efficient and deadly.â
The buyer eyes the weapon up and down. ââŚCovert is good. Iâll take it. Where do I sign?â
âRight this way.â Handler chirps, releasing weapons face to lead the buyer away. The buyer hesitates, eyeing the weapon, but handler just smiles. âIt wonât move until I tell it to, or until you give the order, since once we come back in this room, youâll be the master.â
The man smiles at the thought, and follows Handler. Weapon doesnât move a muscle as it listens to them leave.
The weapon kneels there for a long time, with only the body of the prisoner for company. Its knees begin to ache, but itâs easily brushed aside. Weapons donât feel âachey kneesâ. They donât feel anything at all. The weapon doesnât try to shift to reduce the ache as it looks into the empty eyes of the prisoner.
You wouldnât know, but itâs mercy. It thinks. You die a person. Thatâs mercy.
They were a person once, it recalls. The memory has nearly been beaten out of them, they canât remember much from that life, but once they were a person. When they first arrived here, the person they were felt like they would rather die rather than be a weapon. They tried to, a couple times. It hadnât worked. Now they were this. And they felt nothing about it all.
They wonder if their new place will be like this one. The dark, empty quiet room with nothing save for absolute necessities. One would never imagine such a room existed right beside the opulence of the hall, but just out of sight, there was the armory barracks, where the weapons lay when they werenât in use. If Weapon could feel anything, they might miss that place. The quiet breathing of the other weapons around them who understood what it meant not to be a person anymore. It was almostâŚcomforting.
Weapon doesnât move, but turns its senses back to the present as the footsteps of the buyer and Handler reapproach.
âWeapon, look here.â Handler orders. It obeys. The buyer is holding a thick file, and Handler is holding a small shiny disk with numbers etched into its face. The weapon recognizes it. Thatâs the disc that was used to brand it and mark it as guild property. The numbers are itâs callsign. It tenses as handler passes the talisman over to the buyer.
âDonât lose that. It will obey the one who holds it.â Handler warns the man before turning back to weapon. âYou are now under the command of this man. You will obey his orders, so long as they do not violate the law of the Guild. Do you understand?â
âYes sir.â The weapon turns to the buyer. âReady to receive orders, sir.â
Handler turns to the man, beaming. âHowâd you like to give your first order? Go on. Tell it something.
The man hesitates, fiddling with the disc, looking at the Weapon knelt before him.
âStand.â Orders the man, with a touch of uncertainty. The weapon obeys, rising to its feet. The man raises an eyebrow, and smiles.
âCome here.â The weapon walks closer.
âStop.â The weapon freezes. The man grins wider like a child thatâs just received a new toy.
âVery good.â Says Handler. âNow that thatâs settled, remember they tend to respond better to officially issued commands when on a long mission. All the documents you need explaining specifics are right in that file there.â
âGot it.â The man flips through a few pages of the file before shutting it. âPleasure doing business with the guild.â The man says, smiling.â
âThe pleasure is ours.â Handler replies earnestly. âBest of luck in your endeavors, though with its help, you wonât need luck-â
âYeah, yeah. Save the spiel. I already bought the thing.â Handler's eye twitches at being interrupted, but he says nothing. The man turns back to Weapon.
âFollow.â He orders. âStay two steps behind.â
âYes sir.â The weapon agrees. They measure their steps very carefully as they leave the place of their creation. They feel nothing about that at all. No one notices as they shoot one last glance to the broken body of the prisoner on the floor.
