For me, my interpretation of Random's role actually builds off of the wonderfully put headcanon of him by @lee-the-yeen, who describes Random as acting as a sort of mediator with how he interacts with Icy and Hothead. Along those lines, I personally also see him as effectively being a sort of "trauma sink" for the three of them. One idea a mutual of mine stuck in my head a long while back that has hung around ever since is this: If Icy is Blitzwing the Jet, and Hothead is Blitzwing the Tank, then Random is Blitzwing the Triple-Changer. This plays out pretty visibly in how he can provide necessary self-preservation AND deescalation when Icy and Hothead are at odds. However, I don't see him as just the trauma sink for his own internal conflicts, but also as the trauma sink for the world around Blitzwing. When situations get tense, Random comes in. When the world and his colleagues are beating up on him, Random comes in. But, I believe that role Random serves applies to both what Blitzwing experiences and what the bots around him experience. When Blackarachnia insulted Blitzwing for his Triple-Changer biology, Hothead INITIALLY started to snap back before Random came in and deescalated. Icy and Hothead were both actively resentful of Blackarachnia in that moment, so what did Random do? He intervened to protect Blitzwing when tensions were getting high. And, call me a sap, but I think that's what Random also does regarding the traumas others have been through, including Bumblebee: Bumblebee may think Random is making light of a clearly uncomfortable moment for Bee, but in reality, Random is the one who can be there for Bee and take those tense moments in stride when Icy and Hothead CAN'T. Icy and Hothead may care deeply for Bumblebee, but that doesn't mean they can be the Blitzwing that Bumblebee needs when Bee's discussing his own "messiness" - whether that be due to the subject matter discussed or Blitzwing's own feelings on what Bee has been through - so Random acts as the trauma sink on an external AND interpersonal level. Long story short: Random handles what Icy and Hothead can't, and that includes handling the woes of those around Blitzwing when Icy and Hothead can't (relatively) reasonably handle the interaction themselves, be that because of strong emotions or because they are too busy arguing with each other on how to respond.
