i respect finn wolfhard's resistance to explaining his lyrics bc (while i dont listen to his music) i like when artists let me decide what the meaning of their work is. bc iN MY OPINION the audience interpretation is much more valuable than the artist's intent. but this all depends if you think the art belongs to the artist or the audience

to me being an audience member means i allow myself to be transformed or interrogated by the work. i dont really need to know what the author's intent was in order for that to happen. when i start asking that question "aritst, what did you mean by this" i'm actually asking the artist to reveal something personal about themselves, which they may or may not want to do...or feel they've already done in the production of the work in question. i just think the quest for True Authorial Significance is kind of a wack way to approach art bc it kind of privileges the life of the artist above all else...it assumes that every piece of art they make is autobiographical...and while personal experiences do frequently inform the art in some way or another, a lot of art comes from imagination or speculation. storytelling is the name of the game and not everything is nonfiction

also i think we need to remember someone like finn wolfhard who has been the subject of public opinion and is kind of always under scrutiny and surveillance probably doesnt want to tell people what his songs are about bc he knows a great portion of his audience cannot be normal about the shit he says. like be honest
