This is the first ever entirely unraveled papyrus scroll from the great Herculaneum library. In its entirety. The technology that allowed us to do this will make it easier to unravel every single one of the thousands of scrolls still waiting to be read within the library.

Herculaneum was buried in ash thousands of years ago, along with Pompeii. The above text is Philodemus’ On Gods, written around the 1st century BC. Other Hellenistic works are expected to follow it. Upwards of twenty-five-thousand scrolls are thought to still be down there. Tantalizing us.

Philodemus is thought to be the owner of the villa and a philosophy enthusiast, hence the abundance of such texts already discovered and partially decrypted before now. In my mind, this is the most important historical innovation of the millennium. This will revolutionize our understandings of Greece and Rome. It’s already helped us discover the precise location of Plato’s tomb.

I actually plan to go into this a little in my next Hyapollo chapter so i will hold myself back a bit, though I don’t plan to ever have him talk to his father just because in my personal characterisation of him he is emotionally intelligent enough to A. know he would cause his father further trauma and B. know it would hurt himself more than help. I also imagine he’d look a lot like his mom which is why Apollo doesn’t recognise his face.

A few things to note about how I write Thamyris: Thamyris’ conception was dubiously consensual on both parts, and he loves his mommy and his mommy loves him ❤️

To me Thamyris is a case of a bunch of what ifs. What if Linus didn’t take him in, what if he wasn’t mentored alongside Orpheus, what if Herakles didn’t kill Linus (RIP goat), what if he never challenged the muses, what if he was raised by his father?

Thamyris ruminated on that last what if a lot late at night after listening to Orpheus get praised all day by the gods themselves.

I doubt Argiope willingly talked about Philammon to Thamyris. In my Thamyris fic WIP he reminisces about how he mother used to tell him his actual father was a monk seal (not based in mythology, I just think it’s fitting) if that gives you any idea about how much he knows of his father. But I’m certain he figured it out by the time he was taken in by Linus.

Would he actually seek out his father? Probably not. Would he whine and sulk and say he would instead of actually doing anything productive with himself? Absolutely.

That being said, if he did seek out Philammon I doubt it would go very well. Not tragic or emotional just. . . unproductive. They’re strangers to eachother, Phillammon has no interest in meeting his son, and Thamyris wants to meet him because. . .?
