High Cloud launched off Kurinâs shoulder and plunged into the sea, not far from the Grandalorâs rail.
In short order, the Sea Hawk surfaced, a fish flopping in his beak. Â Outlined by the phosphorescence of disturbed plankton, the bird made his long takeoff run across the waves, lifting on hard driven wing strokes. Â In only seconds, he was airborne, swooping low above the water, turning into the wind and rising gracefully. Â A long glide around brought him back to Kurinâs shoulder.
Expertly and determinedly the big Sea Hawk pushed the freshly caught Skelt into Kurinâs mouth, so that she had to take it. Â Smiling tiredly, she told the big bird, âThanks, High Cloud. Â I need more than a fish, just now, but it helps to know that you care.â Â The bird regarded her carefully with a one eyed stare. Â He slid his beak along her jaw in a careful preen and nibbled around her ear gently. Â
Then he hopped down into Kurinâs lap and dug a claw in enough to get her attention. Â As soon as she was looking, he stuck his head beneath his wing and pulled his feet up, sitting in her lap like it was a nest. Â Pulling his head out again, he looked to see if sheâd got his point.
Kurin smiled tiredly and replied, âI know, High Cloud. Â We need to sleep but I keep having these horrible dreams.â
