I just- WHY is this shocking to people? YES. 12 YEAR OLDS KNOW ABOUT SEX. Go hang out in a middle school and you'll quickly find out how much they know about sex, and it will terrify you. I wish we'd stop this idea that at 18 a switch flips and humans are ready to be sexual beings. We have physical bodies. Some kids are humping their stuffed animals or tricycle seats at 5 or 6. This does not mean they are ready to have sex with someone, that's stupid. It just means they have bodies, and have discovered ways to make their bodies feel good. And you, the parent, may have to have a masturbation conversation with your kid way earlier than you ever thought you would, but it is your job to educate your kid about masturbation- and not scream and shame them. Just say 'Hey, this is an alone activity!'. If you talk to anyone with a kink and odds are they'll be like 'I was watching the Jungle Book as a kid and I REALLY LIKED the Kaa parts'. They could have been 9 without the words to explain it, but it existed as a sexual impulse. There shouldn't be stigma on this. It just is. And it is different than an adult showing a kid pornography. Some kids will experience these kinds of things, some won't. But pretending that no one has a sexual feeling before the age of 21 is stupid, and is setting our kids up to make bad decisions with their bodies. We have all the data you'd like to prove it; being educated- fully educated, not this abstinence only BS- makes for lower rates of STIs and teen pregnancies. What doesn't work is pretending humans aren't sexual.
