Jeremie dedicates probably the most out of the entire cast to stopping XANA, youâre right. And thatâs very admirable. ButâŚnot only is he dismissive of Aelitaâs interest, heâs actively trying to dictate how she spends her time. Look again at what he says. âDonât tell me youâre going to waste your timeâ and âI was counting on you [to help me]â. He insults her interests and then tries to push her into helping him. Heâs not only being dismissive, heâs hurting her feelings. And itâs not something recentâlike I said, he did it back in Seasons Two and Three.
In fact, heâs gone through this mini-episode arc beforeâAelita wants to do something new or explore an option, he shoots her down because itâs not âpracticalâ/wastes time that could have been spent fighting XANA. Aelitaâs feelings are hurt, they have a rift, but at the end of the episode make up. Itâs a nice arc, relationships should have problems to overcomeâexcept there is no overcoming. He forgets what he learned about compromising with her at the end each time this happens, so that next time it does, heâs back to being a jerk.Â
Imagine if, instead of taking a look at a hopeful, excited Aelita, clutching her music for the audition, and scolding her, Jeremie realized this opportunity means a lot to her and wished her well. Watched back to back with âFinal Mixâ, itâd be a stark contrast and a good sign of character growth. Instead, we get regression.
Jeremie sacrifices time and sleep to stopping XANA, yesâŚbut heâs also neglecting his friends and relationships to do so. That is a bad thing. People, especially 13/14-year olds, need breaks and time to socialize. The doctor analogy doesnât work because no doctor is in surgery 24/7, which is what Jeremie is trying to do. Itâs noble of him to put so much to the cause, but also foolishâIâd even say self-centered. As you pointed out, Jeremie feels that he has a purpose in fighting XANA. Feeding so much time into defeating him is partially a way of self-fulfillment.
But what he doesnât understand isâŚitâs because theyâre at war that they have to treasure their time together. A future where they can relax and be happy together is pretty, but a pipe dream if someone died before they got to that point. Or if he neglects his relationships so badly that by the time they get there, theyâve emotionally drifted apart.
Finally, Jeremie doesnât have any right to demand Aelita make the same sacrifice he does. Especially since he doesnât know about a lot of the things you pointed outâthey havenât discovered the army or the Replikas yet, if the former is even in production at this point. As far as they know, theyâre at no more of a risk than they are already, and thereâs no huge time crunch. She does not work 24/7, but she does put her 100% into the fightâas do the others. Theyâve all earned vacation time and the ability to enjoy it when it comes.
tl;dr: Jeremieâs fears do not justify his attitude to Aelita whenever she wants to take a break from work. XANA is a huge threat, but obsessively focusing on work is unhealthy both for his relationships and himself. He canât be mission control guy all the time and needs to spend social time with his friendsâor at the very least, recognize that they need it.
