Icons & Slaves, Eternal Youth

The modern understanding of the humanitarian Aquarius is vastly different than its’ essential nature and how it was written by the ancient astrologers.

There tends to be a reoccuring theme in Aquarians’ lives (specifically moon & risings) where they’re being managed or dictated by people of higher power and status than them, and they find themselves in positions where they have to perform for the people or said figures of power. This is directly related to the myth of Aquarius across cultures, and explains why it was a sign associated with slaves in medieval times.

The Story of Ganymede

In the Hellenic tradition, Ganymede was adored as the most beautiful of all mortal youths. A prince of Troy, he was renowned for such extraordinary grace and beauty that even the gods took notice. Ancient poets described him as possessing a beauty so radiant that it transcended the human world, making him worthy of Olympus itself.

According to the myth, Zeus, king of the gods, became captivated by Ganymede’s beauty and abducted him by disguising himself as a mighty eagle, or in some versions, sending his sacred eagle

Although Ganymede was tragivally taken from his normal/earthly life against his will, Zeus compensated for the loss suffered by his family by gifting King Tros magnificent immortal horses and golden vine crafted by Hephaestus. More importantly, Ganymede himself was granted what no other mortal could attain: eternal youth and immortality. He would never age, never wither, and would live forever among the Olympian gods as the beautiful human.

And this is how the waterbearer symbol of Aquarius emerged: On Olympus, Ganymede became the cupbearer of the gods. Far from being a simple servant, this position represented exceptional honor and intimacy with the gods. Aquarius is also strongly associated with the water element (even called the lost water sign in some sources) but more on that and its’ waterbearer symbolism later.

Ganymede became a symbol of divine favor, beauty elevated beyond mortality, and the transformation from an ordinary human into an eternal celestial figure. Although it’s strongly associated with divine favoritism, it’s different than that of Sagittarius’, as for Aquarius it happened out of his will.

Just as Ganymede was lifted from the ordinary world into one of eternal vision, Aquarius became associated with transcendence, humanitarian ideals, by extension of the story also the concept of networking; knowing someone who knows someone, getting your dream job offer because a random guy you talked to once liked your vibe, unexpectedly marrying up, etc. The myth of Ganymede therefore serves as the legendary origin of Aquarius: the story of the most beautiful mortal, chosen by the king of the gods, granted everlasting youth, and immortalized forever as the Water-Bearer in the night sky.

The People’s Princess Trope

We see this story repeating itself in slightly different manners repeatedly when we observe the lives of famous Aquarius natives. Many Aquarius women, such as Marilyn Monroe, Britney Spears & Princess Diana have been famously renowned as "The people’s princess” and recognized for their beauty and exceptional charm. There’s very similar patterns in most Aquarians lives, where they rise to the top and gain mass fanatical followings, but there’s deep rooted tragedies and melancholy behind their performance. In the mundane life, Aquarius natives devote themselves to a person or a cause in order to deal with this internal emptiness. They tend to mask their inner struggles with a bubbly persona, become an entertainer for other people, play the jester (performer) and seek out external stimuli as a way to fill the emptiness.

Something that distinguishes Aquarius in Islamic & Turkic astrology from other traditions is its association to the celeste. in ottoman astrology and court astrologers’ texts, aquarius was often referred as “Delv-i sipihr” (The Bucket of the Sphere/The Celestial Sphere’s Bucket)

While ancient Turkic Kut and Tengrian cosmologies viewed the sky (kök) as the sacred domain of the eternal spirit, supreme order and by extension God, the synthesis of Turkic culture with Islamic astrology naturally mapped these sky-oriented, fluid, traits onto Delv. Aquarius and gök (sky) became so intertwined with each other that in the modern times, names derived from gök ("sky"), such as Gökçe, are frequently associated with Aquarius by Turkish astrologers. This celestial emphasis also explains Aquarius natives often being stereotyped as lofty, having a God complex.

Sun:

The nature of the Sun is hot, dry. He signifies the life-giving soul, and light and splendor, reason and intellect and knowledge and middle age. He even signifies the king and princes and generals, nobles and magnates, and the assembling of men. Strength, too, and victory and fame, beauty and greatness and the loftiness of the mind, and pride and good commendations, and the appetite for a kingdom and assets, and the greatness of esteem for gold. And he signifies a multitude of speaking and the valuing of cleanliness. And he impedes beyond measure one who is conjoined to him or approaches him. For he who was closer to him in place will be more full of labor than all men, and by how much more one will be elongated from him, he will be [that much] more fortunate. For he who is approaching [the Sun] will leave no memory, nor will a trace of him appear. He puts in order and destroys, profits and impedes, makes fortunate and unfortunate, sometimes raises up, sometimes puts down. Moon:

The Moon is the luminary of the night, and her nature is cold, moist, phlegmatic, and there is accidental heat in her, because her light is from the Sun. And she is light, fit in every matter. She desires joy and beauty and being praised. And she signifies the beginning of every work, and the knowledge of riches and nobles, and fortune in the means of livelihood and the attaining of those things which she wanted. And poverty in religion and the higher sciences, also miracles and sorcery and a multitude of thoughts in matters. Also the inexperience of the mind, and engineering and the science of lands and waters, and appraising them, and accounting and surveying, and weakness of one's sense. And she signifies women who have nobility, and marriage-unions and every pregnant woman, and nourishment and its condition, also mothers and maternal aunts, midwives and older sisters. And messengers and the postal service and reports, fugitives and lying and accusations. Also, she is a master with masters and a slave with slaves, and with every man she is just like his nature. Mercury:

Mercury bends with his nature toward the one who is complected to him, in terms of the natures of the planets and signs, on account of the mixing of dryness and cold in him. And he signifies youth and younger brothers and an affection for male and female servants, and abundance from them. And he signifies divinity and the oracles of prophets, sense and reason, speech and conversations and stories and the committing of them to memory. Also wisdom, belief and the beauty of learning, sharpness of character. And intellect and literature and philosophy and a gift of knowledge, also arithmetic and geometry and the measure of higher and terrestrial things. Even the wisdom of the stars and prophecy and its declamation, and rebuking, and a good omen, and hospitality, and knowledge in matters, and wisdom and obscure books. And rhetoric and eloquence or the sweetness of speech and its quickness, or the explanation of opinions and study in [types of] wisdom. Venus:

The nature of Venus is cold, moist, phlegmatic, temperate, a fortune. And she signifies women and the mother and younger sisters, also beauty and clothing and ornaments, also gold and silver. And amiability toward friends, and admiration and elation, also pride and boasting, a love of singing and amusement and laughing, ornamentation and joy and happiness, dancing and playing the pipes, singing and plucking the strings of the lute. Even nuptials, and fragrances and what is pleasant, and amiability in the composing of songs, and the games of dice and chess. Also leisure and being dissolute and intoxication, and buffoonery, and resisting the people, and the sons of fornication, and every male or female fornicator or singer or one having fun with different kinds of amusements. Mars:

The nature of Mars is fiery, hot, dry, choleric, of a bitter taste. And he signifies youth and strength and the sharpness of the mind, also heats and fires and burning up, and everything which happens abruptly. And a king of power and cleverness, and the commands of leaders, and the army, and the companions of the king, and over injustice and subjugation, and war, and killing and fighting, and courage, and endurance, and the lust for glory and having his name be remembered, and being raised up high, and the instruments of war, and compatriots mobilized for wars, and an eagerness for wrongs and sowing discord, and drinking parties, and things breaking up, and fighting wars, and robberies and digging up of walls on account of stealing, and the cutting of roads and courage and a tendency to anger, and treating the unlawful as being lawful. Jupiter:

The nature of Jupiter is hot, moist, airy, temperate. And he signifies the nutritive soul and life and ensouled bodies. Also children and the children of children, and beauty. And he signifies the wise and doctors of the law and just judges, and firmness and wisdom and intellect and the interpretation of dreams, truth and divine reverence, faith and the teaching of the law, religion, and the veneration and fear of God, charity, piety, also the unity of faith and its foresight, and the fitness of morals and responsibility. And he will be praiseworthy. And he signifies the observation of patience, and perhaps inconstancy will befall him, and hastiness, and lack of foresight after being prudent. Saturn:

Therefore, the nature of Saturn is cold, dry, melancholic, dark, of heavy harshness. And perhaps he will be cold [and] moist, heavy, of stinking odor, and he is of much eating and true esteem. And he signifies works of moisture and the cultivation of land, and peasants, and village companions, and the settlement of lands, also buildings and waters and rivers, and the quantities or measures of things, and the divisions of the earth, also affluence and a multitude of assets, and masteries which are done by hand, greed and the greatest poverty and the poor. And he signifies travel by sea, and foreign travel [that is] far away and at great length, and bad. the 6H is traditionally connected to the body, sickness vs health, and the daily mundane. there's an important distinguishment to make as modern astrology frequently portrays 6H as "wellness routines" in the modern sense, but vitality is actually the ascendant, meanwhile 6H is a cadent house that is "averse" (cannot see) the 1H, meaning it represents things that actively work against or undermine your physical vitality, of course along with labor, grueling work and mundane routines performed everyday, making it's essential quality highly malefic. however, modern astrology has synthesized these concepts as today, we understand that how we spend our days is how we spend our lives.

the 6th House played a role in constitution (humor) because it showed where your body was prone to slipping out of balance. if a traditional doctor-astrologer looked at a compromised 6th House, they would prescribe very specific, practical daily adjustments to bring the humors back into alignment such as drinking specific herbal teas (like thyme or ginger to counter cold/damp humors) and other things. all in all 6H is still important to judge overall wellness and threatening imbalances. wellness isn't about waiting to get sick, it is about daily prevention. for instance, for a Cancer 6H, "wellness" isn't a grueling, militaristic fitness routine but it is a routine of emotional soothing, warm teas, home-cooked meals, and gentle movement like walking.

some examples:

taurus 6H: In the traditional humoral system, taurus is cold and dry. it governs stability, consolidation and the physical tissues of the body. taurus directly rules the throat, thyroid gland, vocal cords, and tonsils. a person with this placement often holds tension in their neck and shoulders. when they fall ill or get stressed, it frequently manifests as a sore throat, loss of voice, thyroid imbalances, swollen glands, stuffy nose, having to cough a lot.

it can give a slow temperament because earth is dense and heavy, the bodily processes under a taurus 6H tend to move slowly, especially since taurus is fixed earth. this can manifest as a sluggish metabolism, slow digestion (congestion) or a body that takes its time to fully process food, medication and stress. they also tend to have the type of built that takes up space, has a feeling of heaviness and doesn't like to rush. this is one of the reasons Sagittarius risings tend to have that big build.

as i just stated, taurus hates to be rushed. the daily routine must be groundedn and steady as sudden changes to the daily schedule can physically jar their nervous system. since Venus rules this house, daily routines cannot feel like punishment. if a diet is too restrictive or a workout routine is too sterile and grueling, they will abandon it. wellness must appeal to the senses; enjoying beautiful, wholesome, delicious foods, exercising in nature, using fragrant body oils etc.

because Taurus is a fixed sign, the hardest part of their daily routine is momentum. it takes a lot of energy for them to start a new habit, but once a routine is locked in, they will stick to it stubbornly. they usually don't like having strict obligations such as having to wake up early which is why they are prone to abandoning traditional forms of work, its one of the placements that gives unconventional work schedules and they like to do work in their own accord.

cancer 6H: in traditional humoral system, cancer is a cold and wet sign. cancer here indicates that your physical health is deeply tied to your emotional state and digestive system. just like the moon waxes and wanes, your energy levels, physical strength, even water retention fluctuate rapidly. you are highly sensitive to your environment, and physical symptoms often peak or shift along with the lunar cycle. because cancer is highly receptive, your body acts like a sponge for emotional tension so a difficult day of work or a stressful environment not only tires you mentally but it physically drains you as well. this is one of the signs that make it very hard to keep up with a 9-5 and the native yearns for the comfort of home, or if you must go to work everyday it must be with comforts (easy transportation) and nice environment. while the 6H represents daily drudgery, having Cancer here means that emotional safety and physical comforts are prerequisites for you to get any work done.

if your moon is placed in a challenging position or aspected by malefics, the emotional-physical link is amplified. daily routines can feel like a heavy emotional burden and digestive or sleep issues might flare up during times of high worry.

if your moon is doing okay, you are incredibly adept at finding exactly the right intuitive remedies to soothe your physical body. you instinctively know when to retreat, rest, and digest to prevent illness before it starts.

in either case, getting plenty of sleep and resting is very important for you to thrive more than any others. many people with this placement prefer WFH or have home offices.

6h aquarius: aquarius is traditionally ruled by saturn, the planet of structure, boundaries, and chronic conditions. when this cool, intellectual and highly objective sign rules the house of illness and daily labor, wellness becomes a matter of circulation, systemic networks, and nervous system regulation. physical vulnerabilities include electric stress and circulation, as in traditional medical astrology, aquarius rules the shins, calves, ankles, and the entire circulatory system (the flow of blood and energy through the body and it also rules the bio electric pathways of the nervous system. here, high stress leads to mental exhaustion, sudden spasms or a feeling of being completely "wired but tired", unexplainable and sudden allergies or viruses emerging in the body.

saturn and aquarius' coldness can give a sluggish circulatory system, poor peripheral circulation. you can suffer from chronically cold hands and feet, varicose veins or ankle injuries (sprains, weakness). sudden cramps and spasms are also not uncommon. sluggish circulation also slows down the metabolism so the native will take long time to digest, may have paler appearance and slower heart rate.

like pisces, because aquarius loves anything ahead of its time, innovative and alternative, you can be interested in bio-hacking methods, unorthodox methods of treatment, accupuncture, tibetan healing bowls, specialized technology (like fitness trackers or sleep monitors) etc.

if saturn is challenged, this placement can take extreme measurements and do extremely unorthodox things to avoid illnesses or cure diseases.

6H libra: libra is hot and moist, venus ruled and associated with equilibrium and proportion. a central theme here is imbalance. libra 6H often suffers physically when there is unresolved conflict, resentment, loneliness, lack of beauty and unpleasant surroundings. these natives literally become sick from living in ugly, chaotic environments so harmony is medicine. they usually suffer the most from being or feeling lonely, even if they're not alone, they need communial support and loved ones closeby. if their humor sways to too much sangiune, they can carry too much blood so they'll benefit from donating blood every year. they can get headaches often (migraine issues), flushed face and urinary infections or yeast problems.

they're weakened by excessive sugar wine, rich pastries too much dairy, sleeping after meals, excessive sex, too much perfume/oils, idleness. gentle walking in beautiful environments restore them, as well as beautiful healing music. Ottoman esoteric and medico-musical traditions associated venusian constitutions (including libra) with maqams such as Büzürg, Hüseyni, Isfahan, Zirefkend.

In 15th century Ottoman music theory, music was so important and divine there was entire hospitals and medical treatments based on healing people with music, as it was also perscribed by Islamic doctors. Rather than a simple sound or entertainment, it was treated as a mirror reflecting the grand architecture of cosmos. Known as the Bâtınî Makam Modeli (Esoteric Model of Makam), this framework connected music theory to medieval astrology (ilm-i nücûm) and Islamic mysticism (Tasawwuf).

According to Ottoman music theory, the notes and soul align together cosmically.

The Sacred Architecture: MAŞT (Makam, Âvâze, Şûbe, Terkib)

Ottoman theorists structured music around a four-part system known as MAŞT. Each component directly mirrored a cosmological or astrological layer of creation:

12 Makams = 12 Zodiac Signs: The term makam itself was borrowed from astrological vocabulary, meaning a "place" or "mansion". The 12 primary makams were assigned to the 12 signs of the Zodiac (e.g Rast to Aries, Hicaz to Sagittarius, Nevâ to Aquarius)

7 Âvâzes = 7 Classical Planets (Seyyareler): The 7 secondary melodic modes corresponded to the 7 visible celestial bodies (Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn).

4 Şûbes (branches) = The 4 Elements & Human Nature: The 4 branches represented the sacred Tetraktys and matched the Four Elements (fire, earth, air, water) and the four humors/natures (hot, cold, wet, dry)

Terkibs = Astronomical Cycles: The complex compound modes (terkib) represented units of time (hours, days, weeks) derived from the movements of the sun and moon.

The Language of the Sky and the Scale

Ottoman musicians matched their language to astrology to describe their crafts

Seyir (melodic progression) was seen as equivalent to a planet’s transit through various Zodiac houses.

Evc and Hazîz designated both the highest/lowest pitches in a musical mode and the zenith/nadir of a planet's orbit.

Karar / Hübut described both the resolution (landing note) of a melody and the setting or descent of a star (akin to exaltation and fall)

just as planets gain dignity (şeref) by moving into harmonious houses, musical pitches gain their true emotional character when transitioning through pitch "houses"

Musiki as a Bridge to the Divine (Tasawwuf)

Early Sufi thinkers believed that the movement of the heavens produced an unseen, divine harmony. In Sufi thought, the human being is a small cosmos (Âlem-i Asğar), and the universe is a macrocosm (Âlem-i Ekber). Playing a specific makam associated with a particular element (Fire, Water, Air, Earth) or planet was believed to physically and spiritually re-align the listener’s four humors and soul with the universal balance.

this is why sagittarius and pisces placements are so often called "delusional", their optimism can come off as irrational to others. sagittarians in particular have a rep for moving on from setbacks almost suspiciously fast, refusing to get overwhelmed in despair or believe that a bad chapter is the whole story. that unwavering faith is what allows jupiterians to reach extraordinary heights and recieve what appears to be miraculous blessings, / what most people call "luck". its like that donald trump (sagittarius moon) meme where he says "idk, the money always comes from somewhere"

but the jupiterian wealth is not merely financial, its abundance starts as an inner state first before it materializes into tangible reality. belief comes first and external follows.
