Working on Something You Love
There is something purely magical and unexplainable about working towards something you’re passionate about.
I’m currently writing this post on my lunch break at my “real” job. I’m supposed to be on a break, but I’m working on my side hustle. And I love it. It’s difficult for me to truly ever take a break because there is so much I want to get done on my own projects.
So many interviews and podcasts and speakers I’ve listened to about self starters often have similar beginning stories of working a day job to pay the bills and spending late hours on their passion project. Yes, it’s hard work, but to me, it’s always work I look forward to.
My hope of course, is to be able to one day transition my side hustle into my main hustle. For anyone in a similar position, here are some reminders that I’ve found useful creating balance managing everyday life and goals.
Zoom out and look at how much time you are spending on making ends meet versus advancing your passion project. Think about what your ideal balance would be and work towards that. For me, it meant working less hours at my day job, which was a pay cut for sure. But, it’s allowing me to advance my own business in ways I couldn’t do before because I didn’t have the time. I see this as an investment towards my goal.
Have the courage to say “No” to things if you need time to work on your project. You are in control of what you give your time to.
But also, make time to see friends and loved ones. This is so important! And it’s something I’m trying to work on myself. The past year, I’ve put more effort towards my work than my social circles and it’s not a great feeling to isolate yourself.
Create variation in your day. If you focus on one thing too much, you risk burnout and creative drought. I’ll always try to bounce around to different projects and come back to them when I’m ready. Having variation also breaks up the monotony of tasks and creates a much more enjoyable schedule for yourself.
Collaborate. Working for yourself can get lonely sometimes. Finding like-minded people to work on new projects with is exciting! You’ll naturally push each other forward. It’s amazing what a great collaboration can do for your motivation and soul.
Know that ups and downs are normal. Some months you’ll make no sales and other months you could land a huge commission. It’s all part of the hussle.
Love what you do and never stop! Simplicity. Remember your core.
I hope this was helpful, even in the smallest way. Right now, this blog is just starting out and I’m not sure if anyone is reading this. But if even one person related to this or found value in this- I’d be happy! Happy and successful trails, all. Go get itttt.
