Knit One, Purl Two
Ryland Grace x knitter!Reader
A/N: I am currently working on the fox sweater! I just have a few more rows of the back panel to do! I want it to be done by October. The fox sweater is what made me watch the movie.
I also imagined this taking place before the events of the movie and the reader makes the fox sweater for him after they get married to avoid the sweater curse.
- Ryland first noticed your sweater. It was a chunky grey cardigan with a loon on the back. The kind of sweater you’d wear to a cabin by the lake on a fall afternoon. He needed to know where you got it.
- All hints of the anxiety of approaching a stranger in public vanished with the greater need of finding out where you got your sweater.
- The little cafe across from the library is where you spend your Sunday afternoon after the local knitting/ fiber arts circle has finished up for the day. Standing by the counter waiting for your drink you hear a tentative voice “Sorry to bother you, I’m just wondering where you got your sweater? It’s amazing!”
- A tall man with shaggy blonde hair and glasses practically falling off his face is beside you. You are concerned for his glasses but you reply "Oh thank you! I made it actually.”
- Ryland was thinking if you hadn’t bought it from a bougie boutique that you might have found it at a thrift store. Of course it’s handmade!
- He asks you other questions “How long did it take to finish?” “Did you draft the pattern yourself?” Instead of leaving after getting your drink like you usually do you two sit down and the conversation evolves from there.
- He doesn’t mean to match your routine with the cafe. It just happened to be close to his apartment and the coffee wasn’t putting a dent in his wallet while also tasting like dirt. But here he was next Sunday grading papers when you walk in.
- You have a different sweater on, a deep green with intricate cables. You notice him while at the counter and he gives you a shy wave. Drink in hand you go over and the conversation flows like it did last week.
- Every Sunday you go to the knitting circle in the public library, then to the cafe across the street to meet with Ryland. Sometimes you two have conversations about his job or whatever article he read that morning but some days it’s just you two sitting at the table while he grades papers and you work on whatever project you have on the go. He remembers your coffee order after the second hang out.
- Your Sunday cafe hangouts soon graduate to other outings. The local museum has an exhibition on the history of yarn spinning. You two go and you gush about all the different kinds of wool that come from what sheep. Ryland is reading every info card that explains the science behind every object and technique. He can’t help but smile when your eyes light up with inspiration.
- He also takes you to the science museum on a rainy day to show you an exhibit on programming and how weaving looms and the knit and purl stitch was used in its development. When the crowds get too thick he puts his hand on your lower back to guide you through. Even when the crowd clears through he still keeps his hand there for a few minutes longer.
- He even came with you to knitting circle with you one day to clean how to crochet bean bags. You grab his hand to readjust the hook in his hand, not seeing how he looks at your face in adoration rather than watching you demonstrate the motion needed.
- You usually like having music or something on the TV as background noise as you knit or do other crafts but you found that having Ryland explaining an inaccuracy in a show or just telling you something silly one of his students did is the perfect noise to work on projects too.
- You don’t think of yourself as oblivious but on one of the days where you two are sitting on your couch, he’s crocheting and you’re knitting, sharing a bag of sour skittles. You can’t imagine a better way to spend your day.
- After work you had to run to the local yarn store, they had stitch markers of all the planets in the solar system. Ryland would love these! He’s been using a paper clip to keep track of his end of round. While a paperclip is practical, these stitch markers wouldn't snag the yarn.
- You two meet up at a park not far from where Ryland worked. It was early fall and the air was starting to cool, school had just started and Ryland just needed some time to breathe after the chaos of the first week back. You found a bench close to a pond. “I found these at the yarn store the other day, now you can use the paperclip for its intended purpose.” You reach into your bag and pull out the stitch markers and hand them to him.
- “Thanks (y/n), look, they even put Pluto in here.” He’s inspecting the stitch markers. Without thinking he just leans over and places a kiss on your cheek. The moment he did that you both stiffened.
- “Oh no, I don’t know why I did that.” He’s panicking, thinking he just ruined the friendship you two had. “I think I just need to go home and take a nap. My brain obviously is not working.” He stutters out as he starts to stand. Before he can fully stand you grab his arm and pull him back down.
- If he’s subconsciously being bold, so will you. You bring your hand up to his opposite cheek so he’s now facing you, leaning in without hesitation you kiss him. After the initial shock wears off another wave of shock comes over Ryland. You start to pull back, thinking you greatly misread the situation but Ryland pulls you back in.
- A year ago you never would have thought the guy complimenting your sweater would now be sitting with you by a pond with his arm draped over your shoulders telling you about the pond's ecosystem as you worked on your project.
