I recently noticed something kind of funny…
Whenever I'm drawing digitally and name the project file something like "just doodling" or "just messing around", it somehow always ends up becoming one of my best drawings.
I have no idea why I wanted to tell you this, so sorry if this is a really random thing to share.
Also, I only discovered julie recently, and I've been completely obsessed ever since. I love your music and your visual art so much. Love you guys! <33

do you think you play differently (like dynamics and technique-wise) live versus when recording for songs or projects? any tips on specifically playing for recording if so
i think so yes, i think through progressing through the instrument, ive gotten slightly more comfortable moving around the drums more which is still even a struggle to feel totally confident in. my recorded takes are typically more grounded and consistent with specific rehearsed licks and repeated phrases but when i think of drums live i attempt to sometimes try to think of how a.) how i can upgrade and grow the drum part and b.) flow more and improvise accents rather than a static scripted beat
it’s very easy to make drums sound too distracting and spatially overwhelming when recording. i like to think of drums on recordings to feel like a reliable composition that is meticulously crafted for the purpose of gelling with the other instruments and then i can somewhat play around with what that composition would sound like with new decisions i make on the cuff while playing live
When writing songs with the band, how much of it is working with material someone in the band brought in (a riff or melody) vs pure improvisation leading to a song?
it’s mostly always riff or melody, although few times in the past have improvised jams influenced song structure

Do you record with rack toms and is there any specific reason you don’t tour with them?
i don’t record with more than one tom. rack tom dynamics make me think to hard and don’t feel intuitive to use. i haven’t used them in a long time so now it just makes me think too hard. something about it just feels like too much shit in the way
