YOUR EXCUSES ARE WEAK AS FUCK.
YOUR EXCUSES ARE WEAK AS FUCKby Paul Waggener Everyone has heard them, everyone has made them: “I’ve tried, but I just can’t seem to lose weight.” “I used to train but I hurt my knee/shoulder/back/vagina.”
“I’m super busy. I just don’t have the time.”
“I have trouble staying motivated.”
“It’s too hard.” “I don’t know where to begin.”
“What’s the point?”
Excuses generally exhibit one of three different negative modes of thinking- hopelessness, helplessness and worthlessness. Training guru John Schaeffer identifies these behaviors as “the first meaning “it can’t be done,” the second meaning “it can be done, but I can’t do it,” and the third meaning, “it can be done and I can do it, but why should I be the one to do it?” Each of them is a victim mentality- suggesting that something outside of oneself is limiting one’s ability to achieve a goal, and that the individual cannot control those outside elements to create a favorable environment in which change can occur. This is not limited to fitness training in any way- it exists across every facet of life, and will rear its ugly head constantly if one allows these poisoned thoughts to take root in their mind. At all times, and in all places, we must remember: WE ARE IN CONTROL OF OUR OWN LIVES. We must not allow ourselves to be seduced by victimhood! It is so attractive to many to have an “easy out” in every difficult area of life, some prepared excuse that will answer any challenge to why they are living in such an inglorious fashion. I have heard of more maladies and specific ailments in the last few years than I can wrap my mind around (usually from the female end of the spectrum- sorry, ladies), that one would think that 7 out every 10 women are afflicted with a thyroid condition, fibromyalgia, or some kind of rare disease that doesn’t allow their body to make positive change- regardless of whether they would stop drinking their beloved soft drinks or eating like a starving tribesman at McDonald’s for the first time. An intense conditioning routine is simply out of the question. The actual likelihood of a legitimate thyroid condition is less than 5 percent. There are only an estimated 5 million people in the United States with fibromyalgia- of this number, 90% of those who complain of “muscle pain and fatigue” (the symptoms of fibromyalgia) and are diagnosed with fibro are women. I am not saying that there are not legitimate sufferers of chronic pain and fatigue, nor am I saying that thyroid conditions do not exist. I am saying that not all who claim to be affected by them, in fact, are. Many are subscribing to another easy method of victimization so prevalent in our culture today, and opting out of a life of trial and ordeal by simply saying “I can’t.” Men, you are not exempt. I have heard the “injury” excuse a thousand times, be that a bad shoulder, blown knees, a bad back, what have you. In many of these cases, the sufferer has not even attempted intelligent rehabilitation of the area in question, but has simply ceased training, and now uses his injury as a fall-back for why he has a beer gut and no motivation to not be a physical specimen of what it might look like if a manatee was crossed with your average football enthusiast. Rehabilitate your injury. Work around your injury. If your shoulder is hurt, work toward fixing that problem, while in the meantime, pursuing training that focuses more heavily on the lower body, or reducing body fat. Barring a serious condition, there is always something that can be done to make forward progress. The most common of all, however, and the most bullshit-filled, is the simple “I do not have time.” The people that I hear say this are often telling me this in bar, on a facebook post, in between watching the game. If someone will look me dead in the eye and tell me that they are so efficient at managing their time that they literally do not have 10 spare minutes in the day to perform circuit training or sprints, and mean it, then I applaud them for being the most completely self-deluded person on the planet. There should be an award, maybe in the form of a pre-tied noose. With as little as 10 minutes a day, one can make forward progress in strength, conditioning and body composition. With even less than that, the question is, “what do you think is better, exercising for 5 minutes a day, or exercising for zero minutes a day?” “I don’t have time.” Fuck off and save your fucking excuses for a sympathetic ear, like one of your dozen cats, during your marathon sessions of Netflix and Cheeto consumption. “I don’t know where to begin.” Perhaps one of the only partially legitimate excuses out there, but so easily remedied that it is instantly rendered as useless as the rest. Go train with a friend, read a few articles, watch a damn youtube video and get going. Anything is better than nothing. If you are serious about getting started on the road to becoming a physical temple of glory, a shrine of strength and beauty, and would like some motivation, information and coaching, get in touch at [email protected]. I offer distance coaching and personal training, which will further remove both obstacle and excuse from your life, and get you headed in the right direction towards concrete results and revolutionizing your life through total reform.
“It is not faith in eternal life which guides me now, but the fact that I know I’ve not long to live- none have long for this world. So seize every night, every waking hour. Breathe every moment.”
None of us gets forever. We only have right now. Don’t waste it on weakness- spend it wisely on the path to glory. 92!
