the SDHL is a top league with a lot of players who have played and will play in the PWHL, so you can see some old PWHL faves, see some future PWHL faves (did you like watching Swiss goalie Andrea Brändli in the olympics? did you miss Akane Shiga when she was gone? did you not know initially why the Sirens picked Elisa Holopainen that high in the draft? are you wondering about the new hot masc Viivi Vainikka and the 2026 championship she won? they were all in the SDHL last season!), and find some women to fall in love with who might never even want to go to the p-dub!

ALL woman and girls of ALL life experiences and journeys deserve to play their chosen sport in the leagues and teams that they are most comfortable with without having to expose intimidate details of their anatomy or be subject to invasive tests or procedures to their bodies, OR to appear a certain way, in order to prove they're ~female enough~.

My motivation was to show people that you don’t have to give up on your dreams to be who you are…I’ve been given a special opportunity to be visible for those who can’t be. Being a professional athlete, I’ve been given a platform to speak about my history and the things that I’ve been through. So hopefully the other people that have been going through what I’ve been through can kind of find a voice in me.

I'd say it's valuable to acknowledge that transphobia in the pwhl (and more broadly in women's sport) is embedded, that many players are transphobic and/or do not think about trans women in hockey at all, and that it is a systemic issue

but I don't think we need to accept it.

Jessica Platt is not as widely known by people who didn't follow the CWHL back in the day, but she was the first trans woman in the CWHL, where she played defense for the Toronto Furies alongside teammates Renata Fast, Elaine Chuli, Sarah Nurse, and Natalie Spooner (+ others).

I can't speak for the kinds of teammates she had overall or the support she received in the locker room from her teammates as well as institutionally from the league, but this is what she said in one interview:

which is to say, professional women's hockey players in the pwhl right now have played with trans women before, and I certainly hope that there are many of them who would continue to fight for the ability of trans women to play in the pwhl in the same ways they fought and fight for their ability to play in a professional league that fairly compensates them.

I'm not trying to rainbows and butterflies this. It is a systemic issue that is reinforced and perpetuated by individual players, coaches, etc. digit murphy blocked me on twitter for a reason.
