Unknown: vintage 8x10 photo When I 1st bought this photo I assumed it was Sally Rand, as she did a Leda and the swan routine with a very similar costume. But when the photo arrived and I started looking at it closely, I became pretty certain that it is not Sally Rand. The swan costume Sally used did not have the long, trailing feathers at the wing tips, and the feathering pattern is different. Also, Sally is always pictured with the swan on her right hand and this is on the left hand — of course, assuming the image has not just been flipped. Also, Sally’s swan photos were taken by Maurice Seymour. So this photo is a bit of a mystery, but still a beautiful image! In case you are not up on your Greek mythology, Zeus, in the form of a swan, seduced Leda the Spartan Queen. Helen of Troy was the result of the union. This was a popular theme for burlesque performances. Dancers with Leda routines included Sally Rand, Rose la Rose and Lili St. Cyr.
