R. Shore’s 1974 cover art to Crash, by J. G. Ballard
having watched seven episodes of murderbot i can confidently say that were i in its position i would have left these dumb ungrateful hippies to die four episodes ago
wow, i reblogged one post featuring fucked-up renditions of children’s cartoon characters and now my dash has seen fit to make me aware that gil and marlin from finding nemo are in a long-term homosexual relationship, something that had never once occurred to me in the 23 years since that movie came out
i hate love hate this website

Be yourself as best you can whenever you can.
THAT IS NOT A GIRL THAT IS A WHOLEASS WOMAN 👏👏👏👏👏
Heres the full hawkmargtrap drunk scene without the laugh track so you can really appreciate all the sneefs and snorfs. And trapper's delayed reaction to everything. And loretta swit said on mashcast that she improvised the last line didnt she? Am i remembering that right. Anyway come on in take off your skin and rattle around in your bones.

Something neuroscience-y that helps with prose: attention is selective. A character will not notice everything in a room. They will notice what matters to their goal, fear, desire, training, wound, or obsession. A jealous character notices hands. a hungry character notices food. A soldier notices exits. A lonely character notices pairs. Description becomes character when attention has a bias.
Yes, this so much this. Especially when in 3rd limited or 1st. Notice what matters to the person who's head you are in. Not only does it help emphasize headspace and character, but it *keeps tue ball moving*.
Unless you are going for a super flowery prose meant to drip from the page like fresh paint you can skip so much and let the reader's imagination fill in gaps.

was musing the other day that I can't think of a lot of Coward Characters who are women. I can think of female characters who are afraid, anxious, and conflict-averse, but not a lot who are really Cowards. my current hypothesis for why this might be is twofold: 1. if a man runs screaming and crying away from something the automatic response is "what a coward" but if a woman runs screaming and crying away from something the automatic response is "what a girl;" if you want a Coward Narrative about a woman then you have to put in extra legwork to try and make it not come across like she sucks because of her gender. 2. I think "cowardice" is seen as kind of the worst defect for the masculine gender role in a way it isn't for the feminine role. comparable sins against femininity are more about being un-loving and un-beautiful, and there are a lot more Narratives about female characters centered around those. basically what I'm saying is that we need more girlcowards and also probably more boycinderellas.
this is a fun thought exercise…
i think joan lambert from ALIEN (1979) and anck su namun aka meela nais from THE MUMMY RETURNS both count as cowardly fictional women - the way they’re both presented in direct contrast to the badass women at the center of each movie does the aforementioned gender-smoothing legwork

I get why they do it, but if I picked up a bow and it sounded like this, I’d be signing up for the shield wall instead!
