This is Rumi!Light and Jinu!L. The Saja Boys are the Wammy boys and they are all shinigami in the demon world. Humans think hunters protect the Honmoon by singing the death notes 🎶 (teehee) but it is actually a series of contracts between a chosen hunter and a shinigami that Watari began centuries ago.

This generation's contract is sealed when Light is pushed into L's arms, L's demon marks instantly spreading to Light's skin in the scene justifying this entire AU.

This has never happened before; chosen hunters have always gone to Mu, but now Light has the marks, he is doomed to become a shinigami and L doesn't understand.

The contract needs to remain secret - humans need to believe they are the source of the power holding up the Honmoon for it to work. Light loses his voice when he learns this. L never wanted to be part of this system, he hates Wammy's House and didn't want to choose Light, but he was the one who helped Watari set the entire thing up to save Beyond way back when.

Light hates L at first for infecting him with the marks, but they both feel the connection running through it, and Light slowly sympathizes with L's pain because he feels the same way about being a hunter. He thought it was what he wanted, but now it all feels like a lie and he has no one to talk to about it.

Ryuzaki was picking out strawberries from his lunchbox. “Do you know why I like strawberries?” he asked, seemingly unaware. “No,” Light answered quietly. Ryuzaki plucked the stem and discarded it without a thought, examining the fruit at length. “They have their seeds on the outside. It’s an anatomical error.” His voice lifted a little, and he went on rather melodically, “You see, strawberries are backwards. They are just like me.”

Took this AU and decided to run with it for LawLight week 2026 🩷

The title is so silly but as I was writing, I titled the chapters things like banana peel and strawberry seeds and then Fruit Salad became a joke and now it's stuck 🍌🍓🥔🍇 (yes the potato chips have a cameo)

Then one day they're sick of struggling so they pretend they're geniuses. They create a fantasy world they get to share where L is a world-famous detective and Light is a mastermind and the world bows at both their feet.
