noah has never really considered any romantic interest being jealous of reagan. firstly, he’s gay. no flexibility there, he’s only ever been interested in men. but there’s also a very clear dynamic at play between them when all the walls and the pretenses come down. he’d show up for her through anything, she’d do the same for him. that’s how they ended up like this in the first place. silvan shifts closer, settling against him, and noah blushes with every gentle trace of his fingerprints. he notices, almost immediately, the way everything shifts. suddenly it’s not all warm and gentle and comfortable. suddenly silvan’s breath is a little sharper, it feels like confrontation. “oh?” a beat, “you think i make a convincing straight man?” he asks, “i wouldn’t even know where to start.”
some part of him knew he was being ridiculous, but that part was buried deep – like, way deep. thrown-to-the-bottom-of-the-ocean deep. his fingers kept moving, though they curled slightly, pressing harder into noah’s skin. it was the red marks blooming across his chest that finally snapped silvan out of it, and he jolted his hand back. “i didn’t realize i was pressing that hard. are you okay?” what was that about?

he was a married man. that was something teagan never thought would happen to him because he never thought he deserved that — forever with someone who really loved him for who he was. he spent his entire life feeling as if he didn't deserve to be happy; feeling as if he was never supposed to be wanted this way by anyone. then came charles. and now all teagan wanted was to have them all to himself, away from the watchful eyes of their wedding party. sure, teagan loved parties. loved celebrating with the people he cared about but the only person he wanted to really celebrate with in this moment was his husband — his and no one else's. his fingers tightened their hold on charles' hand as he pulled them through the crowd — a wide grin plastered all over teagan's face. god, his cheeks hurt from smiling this much. "a little." noise got to teagan sometimes, even if it was good like this party was, and sometimes he had to step away. once they were away from everyone and the party was behind them both, he melted into charles' hold. this was where he was meant to be, there wasn't a single doubt in his mind about that. not now, not ever. "i think that was already a given. if you didn't already know i was selfish with you, we might have a problem." teagan signed happily into the kiss he was given, letting his arms wrap themselves around his husband's body, feeling more relaxed than he'd had in a long fucking time. a lifetime of this sounded pretty fucking good to him and that's all that mattered now. "we can in a little while," teagan chased another kiss, finding it hard to just stop at one. "right now i just...i want this with you." reaching up, teagan's fingers brushed some of charles' hair away from their face, letting his touch linger for a few moments while he admired just how..perfect they were. all teagan wanted to do was savor these moments with the person he loved and now they had a lifetime to do it. "so, you just wanna stay in the hallway and make out? romantic." he teased, letting his hand rest against charles' cheek, the pad of his thumb dancing across their skin. god, teagan fucking felt like he was floating on cloud 9 and he knew he never wanted to come down. "how do you want to start forever, hm?"
the feeling of teagan’s hand brushing across his forehead, sweeping hair out of his face, was so painfully domestic that charles almost didn’t know what to do with it. something in their chest ached, sweet and sharp, and before teagan could pull his hand away, charles caught it and pressed it against their cheek. “i’m just as selfish,” he laughed, leaning into his palm like he belonged there. maybe they did, now. maybe they always had. out of every possibility they’d imagined when they first spotted teagan at that party, marrying him had not been one of them. not even close. charles had expected flirting, maybe. a little trouble. a pretty distraction with a sharp mouth and enough nerve to keep him interested. but this? forever? teagan standing in front of him in the middle of their wedding reception, looking at him like he’d chosen charles on purpose? it made something ridiculous and tender twist behind their ribs. and now that they were here, charles couldn’t imagine any other ending. he hummed happily and leaned in, pressing a kiss to the tip of teagan’s nose. “you know what i think’s fuckin’ crazy?” they asked, already smiling before the words were out. they leaned closer, a shit-eating grin spreading across their face. “i married a fuckin’ dork. me. charles hampton.” honestly, it was one of their favorite things to tease him about. teagan was gorgeous and impossible and infuriating, and then he’d send charles the dorkiest shit he’d ever seen on social media like it was a perfectly normal thing to do. charles loved it so much it made him sick. “ohh,” they dragged out, laughing as they pulled teagan closer by the waist. “my favorite dork.” their grin widened. “you know, you and your brother are both dorks. is that a twin thing? like, did you split all the normal person genes between you and neither of you got enough?” charles took half a step back, just enough to look him over, then slid a hand beneath teagan’s chin and tipped his face up with a smirk. “what i wanna do,” they murmured, lips brushing against teagan’s forehead, “is fuck you stupid in the bathroom.” a beat passed, their mouth curving warmer against his skin. “but it’s our wedding night, and i have plans for you, baby.” their thumb brushed along his jaw, teasing softening into something dangerously fond. “so you’re gonna be patient,” charles said, like he had any right to demand patience from anyone, “and i’m gonna be very mature and not drag my husband into a bathroom while our friends are twenty feet away.” another beat, and then they laughed under their breath. “probably.”
noah notices the way his smile tips wider, pulling at the edges of his lips. he wants to say something, to tell him that he thinks he's cute – OR SOMETHING. but it's not like noah can say that. he doesn't want anyone to see him hitting on a guy in a coffee shop. there's a lot reagan hanging off of him can fix, but obviously hitting on someone in a coffee shop in broad daylight doesn't feel like one of them. "oh, yeah." he laughs, "it was all them. real mouthful, not sure how they fit it on the birth certificate." another laugh pulls through him, "yeah, so does my brother, and he still doesn't seem to get it." a beat, "which maybe wouldn't feel as crazy if i didn't spent the majority of my time in an ice rink. like – hey man– sorry it's COLD in here?"
silvan was hopelessly disconnected from every sport except nascar. he knew enough to recognize that the logo stretched across the borrowed sweatshirt probably belonged to some team, but beyond that, he was completely lost. when noah mentioned spending a lot of time in an ice rink, though, his nose wrinkled with curiosity. “do you play hockey?” he asked, glancing down at the logo again as if it might suddenly offer him an answer. a beat passed before he seemed to reconsider, mouth twisting sheepishly. “that’s presumptuous, i guess. you could just be a figure skater.” his gaze drifted over noah, thoughtful for a moment, before amusement tugged at his lips. “you look whimsical.”

out of all the people caleb expected to see at his doorstep right now, cedar wasn't on his list. hell, he wasn't expecting to hear or see her again at all since she blocked him and he backed off trying to talk to her again. he wasn't going to put himself somewhere he wasn't wanted. but now here she was and caleb didn't know what the fuck to do with himself — it was as if he was practically frozen in place. his brows furrowed when she started to speak but then stopped herself. what could she possibly say right now? caleb's teeth are biting softly on the inside of his cheek to stop himself from either saying something he know he doesn't mean or shutting the door and pretending this was all some sort of fucked up dream. "what, cedar?" there's a small bite in his tone but he doesn't mean for there to be, but he can't help himself. just like he couldn't help himself when he got involved with cedar in the first place. but the look on his face softened when he noticed she wasn't okay and the sound of her voice just further confirmed what he was thinking and then he noticed the tears start to form. god, it was taking a lot not to just reach out and pull her into his arms, make her feel safe and try to ease whatever she had going on. "hey, hey..hey. what happened?" that's when he realized his hands were holding her arms, not even remembering reaching out to touch her. he only thought about it, didn't he? i just need you — the only words he ever wanted to hear from cedar. words he craved more than he'd like to admit. "come here," his voice was soft when he pulled her into his arms, holding her as if she were going to disappear any second now and part of him was worried she would. without another sound, caleb pulled her into his apartment without letting her go. "i'm here, okay? just...i've got you. it's okay."
she felt selfish and horrible and evil, but she couldn’t help it. everything hurt, and she knew sunny and north were there for her. her parents were there, too. of course she knew that. she wasn’t alone, not really, but there was an ache in her chest that none of them could reach. an itch beneath her ribs that only seemed to quiet when caleb was close. his touch was warm. familiar. safe. that was the thing of it – he was safe, even when everything between them had become complicated and sharp-edged. tears gathered at the corners of her eyes as he pulled her into his arms, and the softness of his voice did something terrible to her heart. maybe she had deserved the snap he’d given her moments before. maybe she had pushed too hard, asked too much, shown up with all her grief in her hands and expected him to know what to do with it. but then he was holding her, and cedar couldn’t make herself care about what was fair. i’m here, okay? just… i’ve got you. it’s okay. her arms twisted into the fabric of his shirt, fingers clinging hard enough to wrinkle it, and she nodded against him. her eyes squeezed shut as she pressed closer, like she could hide inside the shape of him for a little while. “i went to the vet, and daisy – ” her voice broke on the name. daisy. her little puppy, even if she wasn’t little anymore. even if she had gray around her muzzle now, even if time had been passing without cedar’s permission. she shook her head, trying to force the words out. “she’s just gonna need medicine, and they said it would be okay, but i’m scared it’s not, and – ” she looked up then, vision blurred with tears, and some distant part of her knew this was a bad idea. not just a little bad. catastrophic, probably. but she was sad, and scared, and she missed him so much it felt like a physical wound. she missed the way he made the world feel survivable. she missed being allowed to reach for him. so she did. her hands slid to the nape of his neck, pulling him down before she could talk herself out of it, and she crashed their mouths together in a kiss that tasted like tears and panic and everything she hadn’t let herself say. it wasn’t careful. it wasn’t fair. it was desperate and shaking, her fingers curling into his hair like she could keep him there if she held on tightly enough. like maybe, for one second, she could pretend nothing had changed except the way her heart still knew exactly where to go when it was breaking.

it started with an itch. something beneath his skin, pulling and pulling until he settled against noah’s frame, tracing idle shapes across his skin. he knew, objectively, that they were both in the closet. that getting jealous over his best friend was ridiculous. absolutely ridiculous. but something ugly had begun taking shape in his chest, and he couldn’t help it. “noah,” he said quietly, staring off at nothing. his voice was almost blank when he continued, “those photos with reagan were really convincing.”

hot stranger in his sweatshirt, okay, noah's heart is flipping just a LITTLE. keep it together, vanek. "nah, no judgement from me." he laughs, "'m always catchin' strays about the way i like my coffee." he holds his cup up, as if to explain it. it's the dead of summer, and he's drinking hot coffee. in an instant, noah's ordering the drink, and sliding his change in the tip jar. the barista asks for a name for the order, and noah looks at the stranger expectantly. "you gonna tell me your name, or should i just put it under noah: the idiot who can't watch where the fuck he's going."
the comment earns another smile from silvan. “silvan,” he offers, the grin tugging wider at his lips. “that… is a long name. did your parents give it to you, or did you pick it out yourself?” he’s joking, trying to remind himself that talking to people in coffee shops is normal. nobody is going to come flying out of nowhere and accuse him of being gay – even if his paranoia is starting to take over. and how conceited is it to assume a friendly interaction would even lead to a headline like that? “i don’t think i can blame you for drinking hot coffee in summer,” he says quietly. “i still drink iced coffee in winter.”
"sure." noah shrugs, smile pulling across his face even if it's too tight at the edges. he catches the way that the stranger scratches at the back of his neck, the same kind of posture that noah wears when he doesn't know what to do. he says he doesn't think noah's clothes would fit him, and noah lets out a soft laugh. "i tend to size up in sweatshirts." he chuckles, digging into his bag for a second. he shouldn't do it – part of him knows that. if he offers something to a stranger, they'll probably take it. but he also can't stop the way that his brain supplies the image of this stranger with his name on his back. maybe that's why he holds a sweatshirt out, despite himself. "what's your coffee order?"
he blinked, taking a moment to think about it before his smile turned sheepish. he took the sweatshirt and pulled it over his head, then shimmied out of his stained shirt beneath it, if only so the other man’s sweatshirt wouldn’t reek of coffee. he tugged the shirt free, face red despite himself. “are you going to judge me?” silvan laughed. “iced sugar-free hazelnut latte with oat milk.”
“it’s embarrassingly easy to impress me,” he admitted with a laugh. sunny looked down at milo again, ignoring the way his chest lurched when his gaze drifted back to her. oh. they were pretty. so pretty – he felt a little nervous talking to them now, which was ridiculous, considering he was still holding her kiddo. “so i don’t think he’s gonna have to try very hard, huh, dude?” sunny gave milo another look before handing him back over, amusement written all over his face and mostly covering the blush. mostly. “i don’t think i’ve ever seen you here before?” his face burned brighter. “oh, i mean, like – not that i’m here all the time.” just most of the time. “uh – sunny. i’m sunny.”

she laughed immediately, though the sound came out watery, caught somewhere between joy and all the crying she hadn’t finished doing. “the mailman’s child has missed you,” she said, and it hurt in a way she didn’t know how to explain. every part of her bones ached for her brother. not just the curse, not just the horrible, hungry thing inside her that knew blood and family by instinct, but the loving parts too. the parts of adelaide that were still her. the parts that remembered roman before all of this, before death and teeth and running. “i would like to see you try,” she said then, moving back just enough to fix him with a look that could only be described as sibling love. fond and sharp – then her expression softened, and with a gentle hand, she brushed her thumb across his cheekbone like she was proving to herself that he was real. “i don’t think i could ever forget you.” she nodded, swallowing around the ache in her throat. “and you are my brother. wolf or not.” it hurt to think about what had happened to them. it hurt to think about who they’d been and what had been taken, but she had roman. somehow, after everything, she had him again. and nothing was going to separate them. not hunters, not hunger, not whatever ugly thing the world decided to throw at them next. “i play bass in wren’s band,” she said after a moment. “did you think that this would be something your big sister would do?”

her fingers twitched again, and this time, her gaze hardened with it. “you are worried about your friend, and i am worried about my brother.” her voice had taken on something rougher, something meaner, sharpened by fear until it barely sounded like her. she didn’t want to be cruel. not really. but every word out of his mouth felt like hands trying to pry roman away from her, and adelaide had already lost him once. when he asked what took so long, something in her breath caught. for a moment, the anger faltered, and underneath it was something uglier. guilt. grief. shame that had been sitting in her chest for years, waiting for someone to press hard enough. “i was not looking for him,” she admitted quietly, eyes still narrowed like she could defend herself from the confession. “because i know what i am.” because she knew what lived under her skin. because she knew the hunger had teeth, and family meant something terrible to creatures like her. “but i am not letting him go. not now that i have him.” but he kept talking, and whatever softness had slipped through vanished as adelaide’s teeth curled into a snarl. “you act as though i am not the family who was slaughtered.” the words came out low at first, trembling at the edges. “you act as if i did not also lose them. as if i did not wake up in the middle of all that death and have to carry it with me.” her hands curled into fists at her sides, nails biting into her palms. “you act as if i did not also feel this pain.” the last word was spat out, bitter and wounded and alive with every year she had spent trying not to become the worst thing that had happened to her.
🕯️attn: @wickednweary.
they could see it – the flush crawling up teagan's throat, the way his pupils had blown wide, the way his hands trembled slightly where they gripped charles' thighs. teagan was falling apart, and he hadn't even been touched yet. that was the thing about teagan that charles had figured out early – his body was an open book, every feeling written across his skin in goosebumps and flushed cheeks and the tiny, involuntary sounds that escaped his mouth like he had no control over them. charles wanted to catalogue every single one.
noah should really fucking pay attention. and like, fuck, he definitely wants to start barking about how this isn’t his fault actually, because usually blame comes with consequences, but it so IS. and he’s hot, which does nothing to ease the hockey player’s already frayed nerves. in case he forgot, closet, population one! “let me at least get you another one.” he’s so fucking tired. “hardly think you got out to get half a shot of espresso and a stained shirt. and unless you wanna be decked out in fuckin’ blackhawks gear, i can only solve one of the problems i caused.”
“accidents happen, right?” and, honestly… it didn’t help that the guy was cute. like, really cute. silvan felt heat creeping up his neck the longer he looked at him and rubbed the back of his neck. “you don’t – it’s okay. really.” a far cry from the man who’d screamed that he hated his fucking life after wrecking out of the cup race on sunday. he was well above the cut line, so it was fine, but that didn’t mean he hadn’t been pissed. “uh, sure – ” a beat. “to the coffee, i mean. i can’t – i’m assuming you meant your clothes, and i don’t think those would fit me.”
closed starter for @cursedhammer !
noah like totally should have known better than to not pay attention to where he was walking. he hasn't settled back into his stall yet, so he's got a massive ccm bag tossed over his shoulder on his way home from the rink. which is probably why he walked straight into someone while waiting for his coffee. or at least, walked his bag into someone. talk about fucking no spatial awareness. "hey man– sorry about that." god, he sounds ROUGH. whatever. it's early. he'll go back to bed later. god, he hopes he didn't make them spill their coffee while he wasn't looking.
wrong place, wrong time, he supposed. he turned, the other guy turned, and – crash. it was kind of funny. wasn’t this how cute little stories started? with a bang? literally? silvan looked down at his chest, unable to hold back his laughter. “at least it was iced coffee, no?” his nose wrinkled. it could’ve been worse – he could’ve been wearing white. “and at least it wasn’t all of it.” he shrugged. coffee was coffee, and he was sleepy. there was still enough espresso left to make it fine.
