Chapter 1
"why did you hit him?!" Tina exclaimed, clearly mad
"It's dodgeball? You throw balls?" Erica defended herself calmly. She still didn't know why Tina made such a big deal out of it, it wasn't on purpose... well to be fair it wasn't fully an accident but it was his fault for not dodging the ball.
"Oh come on, I know you did it on purpose!" Tina was getting annoyed, pacing back and forth in her room, fanning herself, it was quite warm.
"I didn't! Why would I? I'm not a maniac..." The last part came out as a mumble, but it was coherent enough for Tina to hear her.
"Fine. Let's say you didn't do it on purpose, but why didn't you apologize? You embarrassed me and him!"
"Because it was his fault for not dodging the ball, he embarrassed himself! and how are you embarrassed? You weren't the one who hit him or got hurt?" Erica was confused, not making any sense of the situation
"Because we're hand in hand! Everyone thinks of us as one person, if he hates you which he obviously does he hates me as well!" Tears were hoarding behind her eyes, begging to be released.
"Maybe if you stopped talking about him every chance you get you'd realise that he's an asshole" She mumbled under her breath hoping Tina didn't hear
"So you did do it on purpose!"
She did.
"That's not what I'm saying! But you have to realise that he's an annoying, self centered, idiotic bastard!" Her heart was beating against her chest, like it's trying to escape, she doesn't know what it is, but something about fighting with Tina makes her start fuming.
Probably because they're bestfriends
...
Right?
"Fine-- fine, what-- whatever, be correct, be correct like you... You always want to be." Her voice was breaking, tears escaped Tina's eyes.
Erica felt a piece of her heart break off and fall on the ground in front of her. Her face softened and turned into a much softer expression. Her legs stumbled over each other as she rushed to sit down on the bed next to Tina.
"No Tina I'm sorry-" she wrapped her hands around Tina. The soft fabric of her red, flowy, Polk-a-dot top sliding under her fingers. Her hair smelled like vanilla and raspberry.
"Get off me...!"
Her heart jumped slightly at her sudden yell and she backed up.
"Leave. Just leave Erica"
Erica stood there for a second not sure what to do, but when Tina glared at her she grabbed her jacket and walked out the door.
The second she walks out of the house she gets a call from Lucas, she sighs and picks it up.
"What do you want Lucas?"
"When are you coming home?"
"Soon probably, why? Did you burn down the house?" She asked in a sarcastic tone
"What no-"
"Yeah, I thought so, you aren't smart enough to make it out alive..." It was a quiet mumble, but Lucas heard it
"You're so rude for no reason-"
"It's just the facts. Now you have one minute to tell me why you called me before I hang up"
"One- whatever..." Lucas paused then continued "I was going to make dinner for myself and wanted to know if you were going to be home soon so I could make some for you too"
"Sure whatever, what are you making?"
"Pasta"
"Alright, count me in, don't burn down the house"
"I won't"
"Bye"
"Bye, love y-" Lucas didn't have time to finish before Erica hung up.
___
The front door creaked open as Erica walked in. She threw her jacket onto the coat hanger making it stumble back and forth
She walked into the kitchen, hearing Lucas mumbling some old love song while cooking
"Are you practicing to sing for Max?" She teased him
Lucas jumped a bit at her sudden presence. Looking at her over his shoulder.
"So did you have a fun time at Tina's?" He asked, avoiding her question
"Not really..." Erica paused, letting the topic drop but sending him a suspicious expression "we argued..."
Lucas turned around completely "why were you arguing...?"
Erica sighed pulling a chair from the dining table and sitting down "I threw a ball at her crush while we were playing dodge ball in P.E and gave him a black eye"
Lucas was wide eyed, he pulled himself a chair and sat down as well
"You... What?" Before she could repeat herself he followed up with another question "why?"
Erica looked to the side then back at Lucas "every-- every time we hung out, she would ONLY talk about him and it annoyed me, so I wanted to do something to make her mad at him, or him mad at her. So when I heard we were playing dodge ball on opposite teams I took my chance..."
Lucas raised an eyebrow at her answer "why would he be mad at her if you were the one who threw the ball at him?"
"And I quote, she said "Because we're hand in hand! Everyone thinks of us as one person, if he hates you which he obviously does he hates me as well!" She changed her tone to a softer, sweeter one when quoting what Tina said, Lucas noticed but didn't say anything about it and let it walk past.
"Hmm, well uh... Why were you mad at her for only talking about him? She's your friend wouldn't you be happy she likes someone?"
"Because I was jealous!" She paused when she saw Lucas' surprised expression and realized how it sounded "I mean uh-- I was mad that she was only talking about him, and wasn't trying to actually have a conversation with me, like ask me questions, make jokes and so on... The whole time she was just talking about that guy with a lovely-dovey expression and nothing else, it was kinda boring..."
"Yeah I mean I guess I get where you're coming from, but still— a black eye?"
"I didn't hit him that hard, he's just a weak idiot" Erica said, irritation clear in her voice "and I wouldn't mind that Tina liked a guy if it wasn't HIM. he's an annoying, self centered, rude, idiotic bastard!"
Lucas sighed
"Also, why are you home so early weren't you supposed to come home in July because you wanted to stay in your dorm for a bit?" She asked, deciding to change the topic
"Yeah well-- I don't know... I guess I just missed Hawkins, and Max came home earlier so I really wanted to see her, Will and Mike are also here, Dustin, Jane, my whole friend group..." Lucas said before he stood up and went back to the stove, taking the pot off it and pouring pasta into two bowls.
"Did any of them find a partner yet or are they still the nerds you were friends with as a kid?" Erica asked, not fully interested in Lucas' friends, but she doesn't want to overthink the feeling she's had since she was at Tina's.
"Well-- I don't know about Mike I'd have to ask him but I heard Will liked someone." Lucas then paused when he was shaking salt onto the pasta so he can focus.
"I don't think Dustin is seeing someone, he said he's focusing on his studies, and Will told me that Jane was in a talking stage with some girl but he doesn't know who" He continued
"Wait, wait... Jane? Dating a girl? What? I never knew she liked girls?" Erica asked, surprise clear on her face
"Well-- uh yeah, she doesn't quite look like the type of person who'd like girls but hey— don't judge a book by its cover."
Before Erica can think too deep about it Lucas brings over the plates of food and places them on the table, cutting off her train of thought.
"The first time you've made food that looks good..." Erica says, the compliment is very backhanded but she could really care less.
"Was that supposed to be a compliment...?"
"I don't know, what do you think?"
___
Erica walks into her room, closing the door shut, she grabs a pair of pyjamas and puts them on, laying down in her bed and grabbing her phone. She starts scrolling on social media, trying to keep her mind occupied.
...
Erica noticed the time
00:00
The bed screeches as she puts her phone on the bedside table before turning around and pulling the covers up to her chin.
She knows she has to apologize to Tina, but she doesn't know how and when.
___
A loud ringing engulfs the room. Erica jolts awake, turning off her alarm and getting out of bed. She grabs a white tee and a pair of jeans, stuffing her books into a backpack and pulling it on.
She goes downstairs to the kitchen, Lucas already there and plopping down waffles on two plates, he sprays foam onto them then some into his mouth, making Erica give him a disgusted glance as she sits down at the dining table.
Lucas brings over the plates, placong them down on the table and grabbing a chair for himself.
"So uh... Mom told me I'm gonna be driving you to school since she had to leave early to go to grandmas" Lucas says, breaking the silence.
Erica looks up from her food, she was clearly busy in thought.
"Oh okay..." The waffles are soft, but she doesn't eat a lot.
...
"Oh uh, aren't you hungry? You barely ate anything?" Lucas said as they were leaving the house.
"No, I'm not hungry..." Erica said as she grabbed her jacket from the coat hanger and put it on.
Lucas just nodded as he walked out of the house. He was fidgeting with his keys, like he was nervous.
"Are you okay? You look nervous." Erica asks, she usually doesn't really care, but he's still her brother.
"Yeah I'm good, I'm going to get dinner with my friends later so I'm kinda nervous since I haven't seen oost of them in a while." He answers while getting in the car.
"Have you gotten your Maxy-max a gift?" She says in a teasing tone, deciding to lighten up the mood.
Lucas blushes, rolling his eyes, but the wide smile on his face is prominent.
"Shut up..." He says, his voice is soft and he's clearly embarrassed. They both start laughing.
When the laughter dies down Erica says. "No but seriously, have you gotten her a gift?"
"Uh yeah actually, I'm gonna pick up some flowers later and I got her a gold bracelet."
"Aww, that's so cute!" Erica says, when she sees Lucas' flushed face and notices him rolling his eyes she adds. "I'm not joking! It's cute."
"Alright, alright." Lucas said. Him and Max were a very cute couple, Erica was really happy for him.
"Oh and by the way, did you find out who Jane was talking to?" Erica asked, for some reason, she was really interested in Jane's love life ever since she found out that she likes girls.
"Oh umm, yes actually, I mean, I know her name." Lucas, said, sending Erica a glance, he wasn't expecting that question.
"What is it?"
"May." Lucas answered simply.
"That's a cute name."
"Yeah."
"You know, I never expected Jane to like girls."
"Me either, but I guess we never know." He said, his voice was softer than before. "What about you?"
"What?" Erica said, looking at him with a confused expression.
"Well, I never really asked you if you like guys or girls, I don't know too much about you." Lucas said, they didn't really talk till like 2 years ago, and he barely knows anything about Erica, plus, she's in high school now, 16 years old, the age where people start maturing and finding things out about themselves, he wants to be apart of her journey and help her if she needs it.
"Oh umm..." Erica takes a deep breath. "I never really thought about it, you know, I never thought it mattered, I'm not sure."
"You know I'll support you no matter what right?" Lucas asked, his tone sincere.
"Yes, I do, thank you." She says, her voice softer than before.
In that very moment Lucas parks the car Infront of the school, turning to Erica and saying.
"I love you sis--"
"Oh no, no, no, we're not doing that" Erica says in a sarcastic tone while getting out of the car. Lucas laughs turning back to the wheel and rolling down the window.
"Alright, alright, have a nice day at school."
"Thanks." Erica paused then adds. "You have a nice dinner date with Maxy-max!"
Lucas laughs, closing the windows and rolling his eyes. He gets out of the parking lot and drives away.
...
The school day goes by with a blink, she's too busy in thought most of the day to even listen to the teacher.
She saw Tina in the hallway a couple times but didn't say anything to her and just walked past.
She misses Tina, even though they've only not talked for less than a day.
As she's grabbing her backpack from the locker, getting ready to leave, she hears a familiar voice emerging from the corner.
Tina's voice echoes through the halls as she walks. Erica quickly grabs her backpack and slings it on, hoping to not have to go through the embarrassment of walking past her... Which now that she thinks about it, it isn't actually that embarrassing.
"Hey Erica!"
She freezes, taking a deep breath and turning around, seeing Tina walking towards her. She was wearing a basic hoodie and jeans. Erica's eyes jolted back up when the space between them was closing, hoping that Tina doesn't notice her nervousness.
"Hey..." She manages to say.
"Uh... I just... I just wanted to say that I'm sorry for snapping at you yesterday, I didn't mean it..." Tina's voice was always soft and sweet.
"It's okay, I understand." Erica says through a smile.
"Can we maybe watch a movie tonight? At my place?"
"Yeah of course!" She replies quickly, hoping Tina doesn't notice her urgency.
"Okay I'll text you what time! And can I pick the movie?" Tina laughs softly.
"Of course." Erica laughs with her. "Bye now, I have to go my brother's waiting for me."
"Okay, bye!" Tina replies and waves at her as she walks away.
That's it!!
I swear if I get hate on my first ever post on Tumblr I'm deleting this app and throwing myself off a building.
I started thinking about this fic somewhere in December but then early January I got hospitalized for over a week and had to get surgery on my stomach, and uhh, yeah :)
