Interview with...
Hello there, for those who don't know Brassic, can you give us a brief introduction to the band, and what's the history behind it?
Currently, the band is myself (Mongo) on Vocals and bass, Skinner still on drums and Conor on Guitar. We have always been a 3 piece Oi! band from the San Gabriel Valley (25 KM east of L.A.) We formed in the summer of 2007, and have been active since. We only had some breaks while i was on deployment in Iraq a few years ago.
What bands do you find inspiration from? How would you describe your sound?
This has actually changed throughout the years. When we first started, we had a big classic oi/rac/street rock influence. I think now we're evolving more into a hard hitting skinhead rock band. Our new music draws inspiration from bands like Haircut, Vengeance, and White Lightening.
What can you tell us about your upcoming EP "Justice"?
It should be a 4 track EP. It will feature 3 new original songs and 1 cover. In my opinion, it will really be our best songs yet. The cover song is sung by Skinner and is a Decibelios song. The title song, "Justice" was written about Josue Estebanez. I think it's really bullshit that he has been sentenced to 26 years in prison for fighting for his life. Sadly, I think this event will become all too common for many of us who share similar political views.
So tell us, how's the skinhead scene in Los Angeles?
Well the scene hasn't changed too much here in Southern California. Los Angeles is still filled with much left wingers. We live in the middle of it. We mostly play gigs in OC. It's not far from where we live, and the scene is more generally right wing there. I think nowadays, the left wing are fighting each other at gigs in LA. It's always nice to hear news about those idiots fighting each other at regGAY gigs. Of course not much has changed for us when we play gigs. The left wing always gets on the internet to spread bullshit, but they have not once come to one of our gigs. I think that's typical all around the world.
We will be able to see Brassic this June in Scotland, alongside Endstufe and Pitbullfarm, but is not the first time these guys are playing in Europe, what can you tell us about these gigs and who did you played with?
We've played quite a few times in Europe. We first played at Kuggnas (Sweden), also Live & Loud (Belgium), The skinhead Party (Deutschland) twice, and Portugal. They were all fantastic gigs!! For me, it was great just to see the bands that we played with. The fact that we got to play was amazing I think. We did play with Endstufe twice now. Both times it was simply amazing. I think the big skinhead gigs in Europe are nothing short of amazing. over 1,000 people and very little to no fights within. It's a real example of skinhead brotherhood. The smaller gigs we played, like the one in Portugal was one of my favorites. The people who organized it (Oifensiva), and attended the gig were awesome. They really inspired us to get a similar scene going where we live.
Your plans for the future?
Well we are not stopping with writing new music. We are focusing on writing more right now. It is taking a long time, but we must all be happy with what we write, so i think it's going to be worth the wait. After the EP, I think we'll try to release either an LP or a split LP. It depends on how many new songs we write. As far as gigs, we will be returning to Brazil later this year, and we are hoping to get back to Portugal or finally visit Spain.
Any closing comments for our readers?
Keep the scene alive and keep the battle going! NATIONAL PRIDE WORLDWIDE!
Thanks Mongo for answering us!
