The king narrows his gaze, distrust seething in his stormy blue eyes as he forces himself to look up at the knight. There is always some sort of motive, even if one's intentions seem good and just.
"Why do you extend a hand to me when I am your enemy?" he asks, his face neutral yet the question is genuine. "What do you hope to gain, ser knight? I have nothing..."

“ 𝐚𝐡, 𝐚 𝐬𝐡𝐚𝐦𝐞 . . . ” cidolfus positioned himself right at the window — a lit cigar betwixt gloved fingers. it was nearly done, &. he exhaled some of its last embers. “ here i thought i may serve as sufficient distraction. alas, you have your meetings to attend to. ” what did the lord commander mean by that ? he also had his meetings to attend, but there was a bit of time beforehand.
The king perked an eyebrow, turning his gaze toward Cidolfus. His lips turned up into a smirk, a rare sight even for the Lord Commander.
"Indeed, it would be a shame if my commander were to pull me away on...urgent business." Not that he would complain - he would gladly welcome any excuse to skip the meetings with nosy nobles. "What kind of distraction did you have in mind, Cidolfus?"
You can rest. I’m here. from The Horse

A soft sigh escapes Barnabas, his shoulders feeling less burdened for the moment. Though rest usually eludes him most nights, having his faithful companion by his side makes him a bit more relaxed. He reaches out to take Sleipnir's hand, giving it a gentle squeeze.
"Please stay... At least until I fall asleep."

"Curious, are we?"
Barnabas takes a moment to look the other man over, an air of familiarity circling the man as the aether thrummed in his veins, yet he cannot quite place a name to the face quite yet.
"Indeed, I had not expected to meet another here... Perhaps it is fate that brings us together?"

"'Tis my duty to greet strangers with open arms, be they friend or enemy."
The king's demeanor is calm, civil, with hardly a trace of fear in his stormy blue gaze.
"Besides, not many choose to seek me out without some sort of motive. I am merely curious to know...what brings you to the doorsteps of my kingdom."

cont from here. @wardenofdarkness
Joshua really, really didn't want to. But he could hardly just let Barnabas.. leave! Even the idea of fighting had his chest aching, and his hand covered over where the gem was embedded deep into his bosom. Priming was a bad idea. Very bad.
"-- I don't need my flames to stop you." he drops his hand, looking up at him. "-- because I don't intend to fight you."
It's a gambit, really. By the time Joshua's prattled on, he could've been cut in half by the unbreakable blade of Odin. But he has to try. Clive was the one with strength and power. Joshua ... he had his wit and words.
"You are a king, are you not?" His eyes did not leave sight of that blade, though. "-- Surely we can talk. Man to man. King to Archduke."
The Dominant of Odin slightly tilts his head, curious as the whether the Phoenix truly means to talk or it is merely a ruse. The boy is rather clever, that much Barnabas is willing to admit, perhaps far more clever than Mythos. Still, it is a risk to let down his guard, so he simply lowers his blade. His helmet evaporates to reveal his seemingly calm gaze.
"I am nothing if not civil," he replies. "You wish to talk...so talk. Make this worth my while, Phoenix. Convince me as to why I should not strike you down here and now."
He knows this to be a waste of time, but he also knows better than to underestimate his opponent. He will indulge the other for now, then he shall claim his prize.
“the world is wide, and yet we cross paths here. curious, isn’t it?”
strangers beneath the same sky starters. @sephaeroth
A soft laugh escapes Barnabas, almost cynical as he rolls his shoulders back. "'Tis curious, indeed," he replies, gaze llifting to the sky as though contemplating. "Though the world is not wide enough for you to hide from my gaze."
He narrows his gaze, seemingly calm as he reigns his focus on the figure before him.
"So...what will you do now?"
" i will stop you in your tracks, if I have to. " said the one dominant that has literally lost every fight he's been in.
@pyrrhicflame
The king takes a moment to look over the Phoenix, a devious smirk forming on his lips. Hardly perturbed, he lifts a hand to summon his blade, feeling the aether coursing through his veins as he semi-primes. He points his sword at his opponent.
"You are welcome to try. Come, Phoenix, show me your mighty flames."
"Are you always this grumpy in the morning?" // I need an excuse to use my Waloed era!Cid verse.
Sleep Themed Starter Sentences @levinway
Barnabas simply groans, fingers rubbing at his clearly tired eyes.
"The light of the sun never fails to assault my senses," he murmurs. "However, this day deigns to remind me of my...many meetings with my advisors."
Meetings that he feels are rather pointless, but he cannot neglect his duties, even while on the brink of war.
He sighs and closes his eyes for a moment, mentally preparing for the onslaught of the day.
"Don't lie to yourself. Don't lie to the world."
aurora : what happened to the heart? album ... sentence starters @dragoonvowed
At first, Barnabas seems uninterested, staring down the knight as though trying to remember where he had seen that face before. He wears the colors of Sanbreque, so it is easy to deduce that this is a knight of some sort. He then narrows his eyes at the weapon in head - a lance, wielded only by the dragoons of the prince.
The corner of his lips curl upward, a short huff escaping the king's lips. "And what would you know, Dragoon? Enlighten me."
