“    no, i don't know that it does,    ” carol says matter-of-factly, blue eyes scanning @agentnash's face; discernible concern creases her brow, but she knows better than to push it. as they continue their side-by-side trek across the parking lot, she flashes him a brief, tight-lipped smile before turning her eyes forward, zoning in on the rundown motel instead. the bed, as uncomfortable and shitty as the lumpy mattress is, beckons to her exhausted body.

“    mm, thought i noticed a slight limp,    ” murmurs carol, a flicker of a smile crossing her face at the mention of a pulled muscle. still caressing sebastian's face with both hands, she tilts her head a touch to the side and connects the two freckles on his cheekbone with a gentle brush of her thumb. @wineassassin's reassurances do little to abate her concern for his well-being; the evasion tactics are the exact same ones she employs when she doesn't want to worry him, and she can spot them from a mile away.

once she is certain there are no injuries that require her immediate attention, there is the faintest flutter of lashes as her gaze darts to meet his. staring into the oceanic depths then, a barely-there smile, soft and mirthless, finds her lips. “    love, i know exactly what you're doing,    ” carol teases in dulcet tones. “    you don't want me to worry so you're giving me the i'm fine brush-off and changing the subject. i practically patented that.    ”

however, she does not protest when sebastian guides her to the couch and begins to coax her with tender kisses. “    i can't wait for the day when neither of us has to worry about the other ending up dead or maimed. because i do worry, bastian, every single time you're out on assignment, just like you worry for me.    ”

to start off, even though i don't strictly follow comics canon anymore, i have to reference that slightly seeing as i still draw influence from it for my characterisation and the gist, albeit not necessarily the specific relationships, applies to my main verse. this can also be adjusted for other verses.

growing up, carol was laser-focused on realising her dream of becoming an astronaut and had a very difficult home life on top of that, which meant she didn't have much interest in or time for dating. she only had her first romantic encounters as a young adult, after leaving home and enlisting in the air force. because of this, she was very naïve in the beginning and made questionable and arguably bad choices when it came to her first romantic partners.

she mostly went for older men who could be considered authority figures. the best example is her commanding officer michael rossi, her first love, who recruited her as a spy in comics canon too and later became her lover. the relationship ended in tragedy with rossi faking his own death and carol forgetting her feelings for him after rogue's attack, which later turned out to be a blessing in disguise when he returned and tried to have her assassinated. i would also put her comics relationships with mar-vell and her therapist michael barnett (which is incredibly gross, marvel) into this same category. what these men have in common is that they gave her a sense of safety and stability, which she had never really experienced before.

as carol grew older and wiser, her taste in romantic partners shifted and became healthier. the need to feel safe is still very important to her but maybe in a slightly broader context — she needs someone she can trust to be there for her, someone she can be herself around fully, without judgment, and who doesn't try to hold her back. one of the reasons why she fell for the restaurant owner william wagner in comics canon is that she felt like she could be just "carol who used to be in the air force" with him, because he didn't ask any questions about her superpowers and liked her for her. if you take a genuine interest in the things she finds important, she will love you for it. she often struggles with her mental health, and doesn't necessarily know how to ask for help but will rather withdraw into her shell when she's unwell. this also relates to safety and trust in the sense that she needs to know you won't abandon her when this happens, that you're there for her whether she wants to talk about it or not, but also that you will give her space to work through things alone if that’s what she needs in the moment.

furthermore, carol values kindness above everything else. she doesn't immediately judge you based on your worst deeds and mistakes, but rather has a natural ability and will to look beneath the surface and instinctively knows if you're a good person at your core. carol is very intelligent, funny, and charming, so it's important to her that a romantic partner understands and indulges her dorky sense of humour, is able to make her laugh as well as engage in witty banter with her. on the flip side, she values deep conversations and being together in silence. physical touch is the primary way in which she expresses her affection, and she craves it too, seeing as it offers reassurance and reminds her that her partner is there and not going anywhere. she's very touchy feely and loves to cuddle and kiss, so partners need to be able to match that physical affection.

and of course, physical attraction undeniably does play a part in her choice of romantic partner, and she maybe has a weakness for curly brown hair and beautiful eyes. a person's perceived attractiveness is what might draw her in initially, but it isn't the most important thing by any means; if you're disingenuous or a bad person, she won't compromise her standards just because you're attractive.

"out of the country for a few days," he echoes with a grin, brows lifted high over his round rimmed glasses. "you absolutely met someone. don't offer me any hypotheticals. i can see right through you. known you long enough at this point to pick up all that i need." he continues to pet chewie, scratching behind her ears and leaning in to steal a few fuzzy kisses from her orange cheek. "and also, by the way, as a side note, if you need a cat sitter and i'm still in the country... give me a call and i'll come by and watch her. she likes me."

then shawky dives into carol's vague offering of what was going on. she met someone. she was staying with them. she was safe. thank god. "what are they like? can you tell me?" still wide-eyed and antsy, shawky smears a hand over his face and feels his grin grow even bigger. "is this someone you met through work? i'm anxiously awaiting all the nitty gritty details."

“    that she does.    ” carol regards her friend and cat with fondness, the latter's back arched and question mark tail pointed skyward as she parades back and forth across the dining table. from this vantage point, the light allows her to see the thin coat of dust which has settled atop the table's surface in her absence, and the mess of paw prints littering it. come to think of it, the entire apartment could use a clean once she finds time.

“    my friend marina's kid, kit, is one of very few people who get along with chewie and happily cat sits for me, but she has school and isn't always available, so i'll hold you to that,    ” she muses, shooting shawky a grateful look before abandoning the casual slant against the kitchen counter, instead rummaging through one of the cupboards and retrieving her modest collection of tea bags and two star wars mugs. “    hope earl grey is all right?    ”

❝   now   ,   are   you   really   so   proud   that   you're   not   gonna   hold   still   while   i   try   to   patch   you   back   up   together   ?   ❞   gaze   is   firm   as   he   waits   for   the   agent   to   relent   a   bit   before   continuing   onward with his fussing   ,   rough   hands   gentle   as   they   rest   around   her   arm   where   the   bullet   grazed   her   from   their   last   mission.   it's   a   shame   to   see   such   pretty   skin   ruined   like   this   ,   but   what   infuriates   whiskey   the   most   is   how   close   those   sons   of   a   bitches   got to taking them out.   they   were   sloppy   &   careless   .   .   .   he   left   his   guard   down.   he   should   have   been   keeping   a   better   watch   on   carol   &   now   she's   hurt   because   of   his   fuck   up.   he   feels   terrible   about   it   ,   but   not   much   he   can   do   now   to   make   amends.   thank god she's alive at least.

wet   cloth   with   antiseptic   is   pressed   around   the   wound   to   clean   & disinfect the skin   ,   wincing   a   bit   as   if   he   can   feel   the   sting.   ❝   i'm   sorry   you   got   nicked   ,   sweetheart.   ❞   even   with   the   pet name   ,   his   tone   is   genuine   &   sincere   ,   looking   sad   &   strangely   remorseful   as   he   moves   away   to   give   her   some   breathing   room.   ❝   shoulda been me who took that damn bullet. i   should   be   the   one   in   pain   right   now   ,   not   you.   ❞

“    oh, would you stop being so dramatic? it's just a scratch,    ” mutters carol underneath her breath, barely audible, and huffs to emphasise the childish disgruntlement; she relents nonetheless, if only a reluctant inch, and ceases her fidgeting so as to let whiskey disinfect the jagged bullet wound on her shoulder blade in peace. she sucks in a sharp breath at the alcohol's sudden sting, and, a beat later, adds, “    i've survived a hell of a lot worse.    ”

the blanched scar spanning the length of her forearm, fully on display with her stripped to a white, blood-sullied tank top, and the matching scar on the opposite thigh, the one @wovetales hasn't seen, is proof of that fact. a stray bullet is nothing compared to what she suffered through as rashid's captive, or so she tells herself.

then, the severity of the wound or lack thereof isn't the core issue here, is it? the truth is that she simply isn't used to being cared for by anyone but herself and doesn't know what to do with that, or the realisation that she rather enjoys his touch. luckily the gooseflesh can be explained away with the frigid air in the hotel room.
