Kai Leng shows up in ME3. Anderson's clearly got beef with him, but I'm just confused because I have no clue who this edgy-looking dude is supposed to be. "He's from the side materials." Okay. But I didn't read the side materials. He means nothing to me. There's no context for this beef. No explanation for why I should care.

Now, I'm definitely in Camp "Sometimes the information is there if you talk to enough people in the game," and that's all well and good for things like, say, a side character's development. That's cool.

But not beef for an antagonist.

I need to not just have Shep care about this guy, I need me to care about this guy, or else he's just...there. And edgy. Ow the edge. Shadow the Hedgehog did it better, sorry. And you can't make me care about this guy just because "Anderson said so." Seriously.

I've loved just about every alternate idea I've seen to replace Kai Leng. It should have been:

The Virmire Survivor

The Virmire Non-Survivor (I dunno, do they even have an epithet? Whoever you lose on Virmire)

Miranda or Jacob (extra punch if you happened to romance them)

Someone else from the Cerberus crew in ME2

Some random hopped-up-on-tech Cerberus mook that they would have to put effort into making us care about, rather than "Anderson said this guy's a jerk"

or even having Kai Leng on our crew in ME2 so we could get to know him then before making him an antagonist in ME3
