Final Thoughts on Hong Kong

This is my 3rd trip to Hong Kong in the past 5 years, so I feel like I have a good handle on this city now. These are the thoughts I am left with at the close of my latest HK adventure:

If you are a food person like me, there is nowhere better to be. Leave your diet at home, because you’re going to defenestrate it anyways.

Get used to shopkeepers following you—they’re probably just trying to make a sale.

The must-see tourist attractions are rarely worth it, unless what you’re really trying to see is other tourists.

Disneyland HK gets a bad rap, but I love it anyway.

Jesus Christ the food is good! And there’s something for every budget!

The best haggling strategy: walking away.

Hong Kong is hot and humid and sweaty. People can be rude. You’re packed like sardines everywhere. Getting a moment to yourself is rare. Some toilets don’t have toilet papers. Some toilets don’t have toilet bowls. It’s an extremely materialistic culture. You get pushed and shoved and no one apologizes. The cars will run you over if you don’t walk fast enough. The busses will pass you by if you’re not there exactly on time. And I fucking love this city because it is one of the most dynamic, thriving, vibrant, changeling, ridiculous, character-filled places in the world.

May this city never change, and may it always continue to change.

1 Michelin dim sum: xue ling dinner rolls, mushroom dumplings, har gow, siu mai, roast pork, crabmeat dumpling in superior stock, all rounded off with their housemade XO sauce. Nowhere near Lung King Heen or Tim Ho Wan, but still tasty.
