Italy in review part 2: Siena
While we missed the actual race, we arrived in Siena just in time to catch the tail end of Palio de Siena festivities, which were mostly endless parades that reverberated through the city until quite late.
We managed to swing a week long rental at a good price, and so were able to explore many of the ancient city’s countless maze-like avenues and alleyways, which are all of a similar timbre to those above. Then, after a week of morning cappuccinos at Meetlife Café and evening bottles of wine while lounging in the Campo, we set out for Florence.
Italy in review, part 1: La Spezia, Marciaso, and the Cinque Terre
We celebrated the 4th of July in Genova. After a bleary eyed first day in Milan, the coastal view was quite refreshing. We only stayed in our "Castle Hostel" for a single night, but would later return to the city for an extended stay. Then, after a brief pause in La Spezia, we began our trek to Marciaso.
Marciaso is a beautiful Tuscan village deep in the mountains, only accessible by bus. Upon arriving in Fosdinovo, the village where we expected to catch a 6 pm connection, we discovered that that bus... didn't exist (take away: don't take google's "we don't have up to date time tables for this area" message lightly). Luckily, with the assistance of locals and t-mobile's unlimited roaming data, we managed to walk the rest of the way in a mere 3 hours.
Marciaso made an excellent meditative retreat, and we managed to take the connection through the nearby Monzone in to La Spezia for groceries, as well as to get some work in the first cafe I’d found with incredible espresso pulls (more common in Italy than the US, though still not pervasive). There wasn't cell reception in Marciaso, but a few times I ascended the nearby mountain to push code for work.
After Marciaso, we drifted around the coast again - first up to the Cinque Terre, then down to Livorno - then set out to Siena
Providence was pretty good photo fodder in the rain. (at Providence, Rhode Island)
When I booked a flight out of Boston, Kayak suggested I stop by Providence. (at Providence, Rhode Island)

Taal Volcano is 2.5 hours outside of Manila, and is definitely worth the trip. We’re staying at Our Melting Pot hostel, which organized one such excursion. I would recommend them, if you’re ever in Manila
Today we're staying in the attic of a 4 story home stay next door to the old military base (called teacher's park).
Last night we stayed in what used to be a US military base. It had really nice gardens.
In, #Baguio, the #Philippines now. This is at the #botanical #gardens
The center of Prague is so packed with tourists in the summer that it’s hard to walk down the street, but once you get out of Prague 1 and see the city from over the Vitava, it will take your breath away. I stayed in Prague 7, at Sir Toby’s hostel - by far the best hostel I’ve stayed at throughout my trip. Nice beds, BBQ every few nights, and killer coffee. After two weeks of wandering the city and listening to Snow Crash (I find audiobooks are invaluable while traveling) we headed Kraków again, and then south to Budapest

The first two nights I was in Stuttgart I slept on the floor of a polish violinist named Igor I met on the bus from Kraków. He played jazz off vinyl, and had a tiny mostly candlelit room that smelled like incense. Even though I had been in Poland for almost three weeks prior, he was still the one who introduced me to polish vodka.
I couch surfed for the entire two weeks I was in Stuttgart. Aside from Igor, I stayed with a programmer who moonlit as a medic, an engineer who tried to sleep on the floor in my stead, and a house full of artists and musicians.
Germany is by far the most expensive place I’ve traveled to, especially in terms of hostel prices - but I have never once had to pay for accommodations there. Though, on my last night there I ended up taking a 13 hour train ride towards Prague at 1am because all the hostels in town were booked...
Kraków, Poland might be the best city to arrive in at 2am. Within 15 minutes of the train station, one can find a 24 hour pierogi shop, restaurant, and cafe. The first time we stumbled in to Kraków we’d secured a hostel and found our way to Ambasada Śledzia within an hour (While they’re known and named for their fish, I’d recommend their pork knuckle)

The horse on the left kept kicking the right horse. Friggin asshole horse.
Some horses in a small town near Frankfurt. We camped in the yard next to them
