Hell, it was 1960 Iowa: life-size wooden Indians loitered outside cigar stores and looney relatives were put on the porch in a rocker to greet (and often entertain) lucky passersby. Many picked up seasonal work shooing crows from vulnerable cornfields.
It was a simpler time...Vietnam was just a bonus question on a geography test, NASA was showing off well spent tax dollars and Jesus wasn’t yet manscaped. We didn’t worry about keeping our doors locked but definitely worried about what our neighbors thought.
Maybe we were witnessing a world maturing from black and white to color…
